For the unversed, in South Indian traditions, this is no random fruit. The coconut is known as Shriphal – the “fruit of the gods.” In both Telugu and Kodava (Coorg) wedding customs, which the couple beautifully blended, the coconut holds powerful symbolism. Carrying it to the mandap represents purity and the beginning of a sacred new chapter. Its hard outer shell signifies the strength required to protect a marriage, while the tender fruit and sweet water inside symbolise love, kindness and the hope for a life filled with sweetness. It is also associated with fertility, prosperity and good fortune – a silent prayer for a fruitful union.

In Telugu customs specifically, brides carry a kobbari bondam – a tender coconut – during the wedding ceremony. It is typically adorned elaborately, but Rashmika chose a simple green coconut, symbolising humility, divine blessings and the presence of the gods. In Hindu rituals, coconuts are offered during auspicious ceremonies as a mark of devotion and are later placed into the sacred fire, reinforcing its spiritual importance. By carrying it, Rashmika honoured ancestral traditions and preserved cultural heritage.

The couple’s wedding attire further reflected their rootedness. For their rituals, they paid homage to Hyderabad’s textile legacy. Vijay sported an ivory dhoti paired with a vermillion angavastram crafted in the Vanasingaram weave. The fabric featured forest and temple-inspired motifs symbolising lineage and strength.

Rashmika, meanwhile, looked regal in a rich rust and gold saree. The drape showcased intricate temple-house embroidery with antique gold handwork reflecting spiritual geometry. Her veil featured temple-inspired motifs as well, and near the hemline, the words “in every lifetime” were embroidered in gold zari.

Her now-viral temple jewellery, conceptualised by SHREE Jewellers over ten months, consisted of 11 pieces – bangles, nose pin, choker, anklets, arm cuff, hathphool, jhumkas, waist belt, mathapatti, champasaralu and jada billa – completing the deeply traditional bridal look.

Affectionately called ‘ViRosh’ by fans, the couple even titled their celebration ‘The Wedding of ViRosh’ as a tribute to the fandom that supported them. Rashmika described Vijay as her “true love” and “biggest cheerleader,” while Vijay’s caption about making his “best friend” his wife because he missed her on tough days melted hearts online.

In an era of hyper-curated celebrity weddings, this meaningful coconut ritual became a reminder that beneath the glamour, Rashmika and Vijay remain firmly grounded in their heritage.
