Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Accorded Full State Honours In Mumbai, Bollywood And Cricket Icons Bid Tearful Farewell
Asha Bhosle was laid to rest with full state honours in Mumbai as actors, politicians and sport stars reached to pay their last respects.
The melody of a billion hearts fell silent as India bid a final, emotional farewell to the ‘Queen of Indipop’, Asha Bhosle. The legendary singer, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, was cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park on Monday. The atmosphere at her residence in Lower Parel and later at the crematorium was one of profound grief, as a sea of celebrities, politicians, and fans gathered to pay their last respects to a voice that defined Indian music for eight decades.

The day began at Asha Bhosle’s residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, where her mortal remains were kept for Antim Darshan. Draped in the Indian tricolour as a mark of state respect, the legendary artist was surrounded by white lilies – her favourite. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were among the first to arrive, laying wreaths and offering condolences to her son, Anand Bhosle, and her grieving granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle.

One of the most heart-wrenching sights of the morning was that of actress Tabu, who was seen sharing an intimate, emotional moment with Zanai. Zanai, who was extremely close to her grandmother, broke down inconsolably several times. Tabu, a long-time family friend, was seen hugging her and offering quiet words of comfort. Other early arrivals included veteran actress Asha Parekh, Jackie Shroff, and Urmila Matondkar, who had famously featured in some of Bhosle’s most iconic hits like ‘Rangeela Re’.
The funeral saw an unprecedented turnout from the film and music fraternity. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali Tendulkar arrived early to pay their respects. Sachin, who shared a deep personal bond with the Mangeshkar-Bhosle family, appeared visibly moved as he stood by the mortal remains. He was later joined by Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj, who also shares a close sibling-like bond with Zanai.

Music maestro AR Rahman, who collaborated with the singer on numerous masterpieces, was seen offering his prayers. Other musical stalwarts present included Shaan, Javed Ali, Papon, Anuradha Paudwal, and Sudesh Bhosale. A poignant moment occurred when the contestants of ‘Indian Idol 16’ arrived as a group, describing the loss as the “end of a musical syllabus”.
From the acting world, the list of attendees was extensive. Amitabh Bachchan, in a deeply personal blog post, described her as a "phenomenal presence" before arriving to pay his final respects. Also seen were Neil Nitin Mukesh, Riteish Deshmukh, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Helen, Vidya Balan, Vivek Oberoi, and Shabana Azmi alongside Javed Akhtar. Asha’s sister, Meena Mangeshkar (Meena Khadikar), was brought in a wheelchair, marking a heartbreaking final goodbye to her younger sibling.
Asha Bhosle’s passing on April 12 was attributed to multi-organ failure and a cardiac arrest following a chest infection at Breach Candy Hospital. Interestingly, even at 92, her spirit remained indomitable. Her final recording – a collaboration with the British group Gorillaz titled ‘The Shadowy Light’ – was released recently, serving as a poignant final chapter to her career of over 12,000 songs.
The nationwide grief was also reflected in the sporting arena. During the recent IPL match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a one-minute silence was observed, and players wore black armbands as a tribute to the ‘Melody Queen’.
As the funeral pyre was lit at Shivaji Park – the same ground where her sister Lata Mangeshkar was cremated – the notes of ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar’ seemed to echo. While her physical presence is gone, Asha Tai’s voice remains an immortal thread in the fabric of Indian culture.
