‘Mirzapur: The Movie’, ‘Haiwaan’ and ‘The Vvaan’: Movies arriving in theatres in September 2026.

September is not easing moviegoers into autumn; it is arriving with guns, ghosts, gangsters, witches, zombies and one extremely determined military dog. Hindi cinema is bringing an OTT phenomenon to the big screen with ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’, turning Akshay Kumar spectacularly wicked in ‘Haiwaan’ and sending Sidharth Malhotra into a forbidden forest in ‘The Vvaan’. South cinema is ready to counter with Karthi’s double-role spy mission in ‘Sardar 2’, Nani’s blood-soaked rebellion in ‘The Paradise’ and Dulquer Salmaan discovering that even a hand transplant can come with unfinished business.

The Hollywood side is just as cheerfully chaotic. There are genetically engineered soldiers in ‘Onslaught’, a fresh outbreak in ‘Resident Evil’, the return of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s Owens sisters, and an ‘Avengers: Endgame’ encore designed to point audiences towards Doomsday. In other words, September’s theatrical calendar has something for every mood – provided the mood is not “stay home”.

1. I’m Game

Dulquer Salmaan opens the month with a hand that apparently has a mind – and a revenge plan – of its own. The Malayalam action thriller follows Dan John, a smooth operator with a taste for easy money whose life turns properly strange after a hand transplant. His new limb appears determined to avenge the death of its former owner, turning what sounds like a medical miracle into a very physical mystery. The film reunites action and attitude under RDX director Nahas Hidhayath and is arriving in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada after moving from its earlier August 20 date.

2. Mirzapur: The Movie

The first theatrical chapter of the ‘Mirzapur’ universe goes back to an earlier period, with Kaleen Bhaiya in control, Munna straining against his father and Guddu being drawn towards the criminal life that will eventually consume him. Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu return to their signature roles; Jitendra Kumar plays Bablu, while Ravi Kishan enters the universe as a gangster. Directed by series veteran Gurmmeet Singh and written by creator Puneet Krishna, the film is not a compressed “best of” the show but an untold chapter mounted for cinemas.

3. Jeevan Bheema Yojana

Arshad Warsi’s first double role begins with a terrible financial idea – which is usually where the best dark comedies begin. Debt-ridden Jeevan and his resourceful wife Yojana spot a possible escape when they encounter Bheema, a dangerous stranger who looks exactly like Jeevan. The couple attempts to build an insurance scam around the resemblance, only to discover that their convenient lookalike is entangled in a diamond-smuggling racket. Cue lies, greed, mistaken identity and the gradual collapse of every foolproof plan. Sanjeeda Shaikh plays Yojana and Vijay Raaz adds another layer of mystery as Vinayak. Initially scheduled for August 28, the film moved to September 4 – placing Arshad’s two characters opposite the many gangsters of Mirzapur.

4. Onslaught

If September 4 already looked violent, Adam Wingard has brought genetically engineered super-soldiers to settle the matter. Adria Arjona plays Celeste, an ex-Army sniper and fiercely protective mother who must defend her young daughter after a rogue squad breaks loose in the desert. Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall and Drew Starkey join the ensemble, while UFC fighter Alex Pereira plays the terrifying Butcher. Wingard – returning to leaner genre mayhem after his MonsterVerse blockbusters – mixes action, sci-fi and horror in what has been described as a super-soldier slasher.

5. Mandaadi

Forget manicured stadiums: ‘Mandaadi’ takes its sport to the open sea. Set along coastal Tamil Nadu, the Tamil-Telugu action drama revolves around rival fishing teams competing in a traditional sailboat race, with Soori and Suhas positioned on opposite sides of a battle that is about pride, survival and far more than a trophy. Mahima Nambiar and Sathyaraj co-star, while G.V. Prakash Kumar supplies the music. The production spent months filming at sea, and that physical hardship is visible in the teaser’s crashing waves, ropes and sun-beaten faces.

6. Demonte Colony 3

The sensible response to surviving Demonte Colony would be to change cities and never discuss antiques again. Fortunately for horror fans, Arulnithi is returning. The third film expands the mythology established by the 2015 original and its 2024 sequel, as Srini and the franchise’s other survivors face an ancient supernatural force whose appetite has only grown. Priya Bhavani Shankar returns as Debbie, with Guru Somasundaram entering the nightmare as a sinister librarian. Director R. Ajay Gnanamuthu has described the series as a larger multi-film story, and the third chapter’s tagline – “The End Is Too Far” – makes it clear that the haunted colony has no interest in offering quick closure.

7. Sardar 2

Karthi once again performs the workload of two spies’ worth of star power, reprising both legendary intelligence operative Chandra Bose, better known as Sardar, and his son Inspector Vijay Prakash. The sequel works across two timelines: the present-day Vijay is pushed into his most dangerous mission when the mysterious Black Dagger threatens national security, while flashbacks reveal the sacrifices that forged Sardar. S.J. Suryah plays Black Dagger with the sort of villainous voltage his casting instantly promises; Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath and returning actor Rajisha Vijayan round out the central cast.

8. Haiwaan

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are reuniting after ‘Tashan’, but anyone expecting ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ banter should lower the disco ball and switch on the night light. In Priyadarshan’s horror-tinged psychological thriller, Saif plays a visually impaired man who becomes locked in a deadly cat-and-mouse chase with Akshay’s vengeful, unapologetically evil killer. Boman Irani appears as a judge, Saiyami Kher as a police officer and Mohanlal makes a cameo. The film is a Hindi remake of Priyadarshan’s acclaimed 2016 Malayalam thriller ‘Oppam’.

9. Last Man in Tower

No monsters, serial killers or secret agents are required here; one Mumbai housing society and a lucrative redevelopment offer provide quite enough danger. Adapted from Aravind Adiga’s novel, ‘Last Man in Tower’ stars Manoj Bajpayee as Masterji, a retired teacher who refuses to sell his home after a builder’s buyout offer wins over his neighbours. His quiet no gradually turns friends into opponents and exposes the price people place on loyalty, community and conscience. Boman Irani and Divya Dutta lead the ensemble around him. Directed by Ben Rekhi from a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala, the film is a late addition to the month and marks Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media’s first Hindi feature production.

10. Epic: First Semester

After the emotional wreckage of Baby, Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya reunite for a coming-of-age romance with a much breezier passport. ‘Epic: First Semester’ follows a middle-class student sent abroad under the weight of family expectations, where romance, identity and the untidy business of growing up collide. It also connects with director Aditya Haasan’s hit series ‘90s: A Middle Class Biopic’, with Sivaji and Vasuki returning in parental roles. That gives the film two ready-made hooks: the ‘Baby’ pair together again, and a familiar middle-class family entering a bigger cinematic world.

11. Mahendragiri Varahi

This Telugu mythological thriller begins with an exceptionally bad family history: for 150 years, members of Mahendragiri’s royal line have died one after another, and the deaths are blamed on the curse of Varahi Matha. Malvika Nair and Meenakshi Goswami co-star, with Siddhu Jonnalagadda making a special appearance. 12. Fall 2: Deadpoint

The first Fall proved that two people, one impossible height and no sensible escape route can be more stressful than an army of villains. The sequel raises the altitude and relocates the terror to Mount Kwan in Thailand. Grieving her sister’s death, Jax joins the fearless Luce on a notorious plank walk; a rockslide soon traps them on a narrow ledge roughly 3,000 feet above the ground. Harriet Slater and Arsema Thomas inherit the franchise’s vertigo, while the Spierig brothers direct. The film begins its international rollout on September 2 but is currently listed for September 11 in India.

13. The Uprising

Jamie Bell, Thomasin McKenzie, Katherine Waterston, Stephen Dillane and Tom Hollander populate the sprawling historical drama. Greengrass is at his best when institutions, crowds and individuals collide at frightening speed, so a rebellion against crushing taxation and royal power looks very much like his natural habitat – even if the costumes are several centuries older.

14. Runner

Some delivery jobs come with a one-star customer review; this one comes with a cartel. Alan Ritchson plays former soldier Hank Malone, who must transport a donor liver in time to save a young girl. Owen Wilson is the unlikely partner dragged into the mission, and the pair soon become targets in a moving gauntlet of ambushes, betrayals and increasingly inconvenient bullets. Rodrigo Santoro and Leila George co-star, while ‘Need for Speed’ filmmaker Scott Waugh keeps the clock – and presumably several vehicles – running. The medical cargo gives the action a clean, urgent engine: they cannot lose it, damage it or arrive late.

15. Practical Magic 2

28 years after the original film, the Owens women are putting the lime back in the coconut – and confronting the family curse that refuses to take a hint. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as witch sisters Sally and Gillian, joined again by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as Aunts Franny and Jet. Joey King and Maisie Williams represent the next generation as buried family secrets and emerging dark abilities threaten to pull the clan apart. Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier takes charge of the sequel, inspired by Alice Hoffman’s ‘The Book of Magic’.

16. Vibe

Kunal Kemmu and Sparsh Shrivastava play Hardik and Bugs, ordinary friends who stumble into a dangerous conspiracy and are abruptly recruited for a mission to protect the country. Preity Zinta plays the commanding figure attempting to steer the two accidental heroes through the chaos. Written and directed by Kunal Kemmu, ‘Vibe’ blends patriotic stakes with buddy-comedy panic.

17. Daayra

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran share the screen for the first time – and neither has been invited for a light evening. The two play police officers in Meghna Gulzar’s true-events-inspired investigative thriller, which examines a brutal crime while questioning the distance between law, justice and punishment. Rather than presenting its morality in clean black and white, ‘Daayra’ is built around blurred boundaries and the uncomfortable beliefs that surface when an investigation pushes people past their certainties. It also reunites Meghna Gulzar with Junglee Pictures after ‘Talvar’ and ‘Raazi’.

18. Resident Evil

Raccoon City is once again having the sort of night that destroys property values. Zach Cregger’s new ‘Resident Evil’ is not a continuation of the Milla Jovovich films or a direct retelling of one game. Instead, it follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, whose routine delivery collapses into an all-night race for survival during an outbreak. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser co-star. Cregger has promised an original story that captures the games’ rhythm – limited resources, escalating threats and the creeping certainty that the next locked door contains something awful.

19. The Paradise

There is nothing remotely peaceful about this Paradise. Nani reunites with Dasara director Srikanth Odela as Jadal, a fierce leader rising from a marginalised Secunderabad community to challenge the people who have oppressed it. Raghav Juyal plays the antagonistic Vikram Maalik, while Kayadu Lohar, Mohan Babu and Sonali Kulkarni feature in the ensemble. The teaser promises grime, rebellion and unapologetically huge action, culminating in Nani perched above a pile of bodies with a bladed chain. The film is scheduled for an unusually ambitious eight-language rollout, including English and Spanish.

20. The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest

The teaser blends folk horror, mythology and action through tiger imagery, tridents and a possible Goddess Durga connection. Sunil Grover, Maniesh Paul and Shweta Tiwari co-star. The scale is a striking departure for director Deepak Kumar Mishra, best known for the grounded humour of ‘Panchayat’.

21. Dorothy

Karthik Subbaraj’s tenth feature is also one of September’s most intriguingly secretive films. Keerthy Suresh plays the title character in a Tamil mystery drama whose full plot remains under wraps. The early material suggests two lives becoming entangled around Dorothy, with friendship, identity and buried tensions shaping the story. Sananth and Rishikanth co-star, while Ilaiyaraaja provides the music. Before its theatrical release, the independently mounted film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11. That festival-to-multiplex journey makes Dorothy a quieter but particularly interesting counter-programmer on a date crowded with franchises and spectacle.

22. Meesaya Murukku 2

Aadhi returns as writer, director, composer and lead actor, with Chaithra J. Achar, Ketika Sharma, Ramya Ranganathan and Yogi Babu joining the new chapter. Detailed plot information is being guarded, but the sequel continues the world of an independent musician trying to balance ambition, relationships and the realities behind the stage lights. The makers have been selling it as a “concert in theatres,” which is exactly the sort of promise expected from a film whose director can also score the hero’s entrance.

23. Heart of the Beast

With brutal weather, wild animals and no easy route home, man and dog must rely on their training and each other. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe co-star. Ayer previously directed Brad Pitt in ‘Fury’, but this battle is smaller and more intimate – the emotional centre is not a military unit but the bond between a veteran and the animal that survived alongside him.

Robert Pattinson enters the unnerving world of 2000s tabloid television as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen. Set in 2006 and inspired by true events, Primetime follows Hansen’s attempt to make broadcast history through televised sting operations, while probing the increasingly blurry line between public service, performance and spectacle. Merritt Wever plays a producer, Skyler Gisondo appears as a young actor involved in the stings and Phoebe Bridgers joins the team. The drama marks documentarian Lance Oppenheim’s narrative-feature debut, an apt match for material in which the camera does not merely record events – it changes how everyone behaves.

25. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother

Main cast: Mahershala Ali, John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Tramell Tillman

Release date: September 25 in select theatres; wider rollout in October

The title comes from an Islamic hadith, but the plot arrives with a blade in its hand. Mahershala Ali plays Latif, a devoutly religious hitman trying to balance faith, work and fatherhood. After his wife dies, he races across Houston to protect his children while enemies close in and his own convictions begin to fracture. John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali and Tramell Tillman co-star. Writer-director Bassam Tariq and Ali were once attached to Marvel’s long-delayed Blade; their eventual collaboration has become this more personal original action thriller instead.

26. Avengers: Endgame - Encore

No, Marvel has not secretly made another Endgame. This is a special theatrical presentation of the 2019 blockbuster in which the surviving Avengers attempt a time-heist to reverse Thanos’ universe-altering snap. The attraction is not only the chance to hear “Avengers, assemble” with several hundred equally emotional strangers again: the ‘Encore’ edition includes an exclusive look at December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with additional material promised for select IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. It returns to Indian cinemas in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Six years of multiverse complications later, Marvel is inviting everyone back to the moment the timeline was merely complicated rather than completely ungovernable.
