Athiya Shetty Faces Backlash For Sharing Lata Mangeshkar’s Photo While Paying Tribute To Asha Bhosle
Athiya Shetty faced massive backlash after mistakenly posting Lata Mangeshkar’s photo while mourning Asha Bhosle’s demise.
The Indian film industry was plunged into a state of profound grief on Sunday, April 12, following the passing of the legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle. As tributes from across the globe poured in to honour the ‘Melody Queen’, a major social media blunder by Bollywood actress Athiya Shetty has sparked a massive wave of backlash, with netizens labelling the error as “insensitive” and “pathetic”. Athiya Shetty, daughter of veteran actor Suniel Shetty, joined the fraternity in expressing her condolences on Instagram.

However, the actress inadvertently sparked a firestorm when she posted a picture of the late Lata Mangeshkar – who passed away in February 2022 – while mourning the demise of Asha Bhosle. The mix-up between the two iconic sisters was caught almost instantly by eagle-eyed social media users.

Despite Athiya deleting the story shortly after realising the mistake and replacing it with an actual photograph of Asha Bhosle, screenshots of the original post had already gone viral. The slip-up has since become a focal point of criticism, with many questioning the new-age actors’ connection to the industry’s roots.
The reaction on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit was swift and unforgiving. Critics did not hold back, calling out the actress for what they perceived as a lack of basic attention and respect.

One user commented, “She’s never gonna live this down. Her stupidity is now documented for years to come. Imagine having access to technology and still being an absolute idiot.”
Another scathing remark read, “Athiya Shetty is beauty without brains. Nepo kids just want to be relevant somehow, without hard work or struggle, and that’s why their movies flop and they make such blunders.”
Some users even suggested that the mistake stemmed from a desire to maintain a specific social media aesthetic rather than genuine grief. “She definitely tried searching for an old picture to maintain the aesthetics... instead, she should have just uploaded a recent picture that doesn't confuse a little brain,” one post read.
Others were blunter, describing the error as "dumbness of the highest order" and "frankly pathetic," suggesting that if her knowledge was "zero," she should have remained silent.
The controversy comes at a time when the nation is mourning a monumental loss. Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. She had been admitted to the ICU on Saturday following cardiac and respiratory complications and had been in declining health for several months.
Asha Bhosle’s career spanned over eight decades, during which she recorded thousands of songs across multiple Indian languages. Her versatility and range earned her numerous accolades, including seven Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Awards and two National Film Awards for her work in Umrao Jaan (‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’) and Ijaazat (‘Mera Kuch Saamaan’). She was also a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour.
The legendary singer’s mortal remains have been kept at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, for a final glimpse. Her family has confirmed that her last rites will be conducted with state honours at 4 pm on Monday evening.
