‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ opens in cinemas on Friday, September 4, 2026, in Hindi and Telugu. It is the franchise’s first theatrical outing after three seasons on Prime Video. The film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.

The movie is directed by Gurmmeet Singh, who has been closely associated with the series from its first season, and written by creator Puneet Krishna.

The Central Board of Film Certification’s official record lists an A certificate and a certified length of 197 minutes and 19 seconds – or 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The certification came with changes even though the film is restricted to adults. According to a report by India Today on the certification process, 35 seconds were removed from intimate sequences, four expletives were muted and six abusive expressions were replaced. No violent or gory sequence was reportedly ordered out.

What Is ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ About?

The gaddi is still the prize, but the board has become larger. Kaleen Bhaiya controls Mirzapur; Munna sees himself as its natural heir; Jaunpur don Rati Shankar remains a rival; and Guddu and Bablu are the fast-rising brothers who have already disturbed the old order. Into that combustible arrangement walks a new claimant: Babban Babua, played by Ravi Kishan, a violent figure from the deserts of Jaisalmer with an old connection to Mirzapur – and a pair of scissors as his weapon of choice. The film therefore does not merely enlarge an old episode for cinemas. It inserts an unseen conflict into the established world and takes the action beyond eastern Uttar Pradesh. Pankaj Tripathi told The Hollywood Reporter India that roughly half the story unfolds along the Ganga plains and the other half in Rajasthan, giving the familiar grime of Purvanchal a visually contrasting desert battleground. The central engine is clear: old contenders want Mirzapur, and the dangerous new man from Jaisalmer has not travelled all that way for the sightseeing.

Where Does The Movie Fit Into The ‘Mirzapur’ Timeline?

Here is the answer that unlocks nearly every mystery: the film is set between Episodes 6 and 7 of Season 1. Shweta Tripathi Sharma described it as a “segue” between those episodes and made clear that it is a complete, separate story within the same world. That makes prequel a convenient but technically imperfect label. The movie does not take place before the series begins; it enters the first season halfway through. Pankaj Tripathi has similarly said it is neither a conventional prequel nor sequel, but an untold chapter within the Season 1 timeframe. Think of it as a road the original show passed without taking – now widened into a 197-minute theatrical detour.

Episode 6, titled ‘Barfi’, is an ideal junction. Guddu and Bablu have proved their value to Kaleen Bhaiya and are being trusted with expanding his opium operation. Munna’s hunger for power is worsening, SSP Ram Sharan Maurya has arrived to challenge Mirzapur’s criminal machinery, and Guddu and Sweety’s relationship has moved forward. The original series then proceeded into Episode 7; the movie pauses the clock and asks what else could have happened before it did.

Why Is Munna Bhaiya Alive?

Because Munna has not died yet. Divyenndu’s character was killed in the Season 2 finale, but the movie travels back to a period during Season 1 when he was very much alive, dangerously ambitious and still convinced that the gaddi came with his birth certificate. There is no confirmed resurrection, secret survival or supernatural twist involved.

When the film was announced, Divyenndu joked that he was a Hindi-film hero and therefore immortal. The real narrative device is much simpler: move the clock backwards, and the franchise can restore one of its most popular troublemakers without undoing the series.

How Are Sweety And Compounder Back?

The same timeline rule applies. Compounder, played by Abhishek Banerjee, is killed by Munna in Episode 7 after the attempt on Kaleen Bhaiya’s life goes wrong. Since the film slots in just before that episode, Munna’s fiercely loyal friend is still around. Sweety, played by Shriya Pilgaonkar, dies alongside Bablu in the Season 1 finale, two episodes later. At the movie’s starting point, she is alive and her romance with Guddu is developing.

In other words, the film has not reversed either death; it has arrived before them. That distinction also explains the return of Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s Bauji and Shubhrajyoti Barat’s Rati Shankar, among other familiar figures. Puneet Krishna confirmed that the project revisits the earlier timeline and includes characters lost during Season 1.

There is another entertaining consequence: viewers meet earlier versions of survivors too. This is not the battle-hardened Golu of the later seasons. Shweta Tripathi has described the film’s Golu as someone who still believes in elections, change and non-violence – before grief turns her into one of the gaddi’s armed contenders.

Why Is Jitendra Kumar Playing Bablu Instead Of Vikrant Massey?

Bablu Pandit returns because, like Sweety, he is alive at this point in Season 1. The surprise is the face: Jitendra Kumar has taken over the role from Vikrant Massey. The teaser confirmed the switch, and Harshita Gaur, who plays Bablu’s sister Dimpy, has said Jitendra preserves Bablu’s innocence and finds a natural rhythm with Ali Fazal’s Guddu.

Why did Vikrant Massey not return? The accurate answer is that no definitive on-record explanation has come from either Massey or the makers. Reports published during production claimed that he had been approached and declined. Massey later said, “I wish they hadn’t killed me,” while recalling Bablu’s original exit, but he did not present that comment as an explanation for missing the movie.

The returning centre remains formidable: Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi Sharma as Golu Gupta, Shriya Pilgaonkar as Sweety Gupta, Abhishek Banerjee as Compounder, Harshita Gaur as Dimpy Pandit, Sheeba Chaddha as Vasudha Pandit, Rajesh Tailang as Ramakant Pandit, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Bauji and Shaji Chaudhary as Maqbool. No. In fact, watching all three could make the movie’s time jump feel more confusing until its premise is explained. Pankaj Tripathi has said the film was built as a standalone experience with a beginning, middle and end, and that people unfamiliar with ‘Mirzapur’ can enjoy it.

For viewers who want the ideal refresher, Ali Fazal has offered a wonderfully precise homework assignment: watch Season 1, Episodes 1 to 6. Those episodes establish Kaleen Bhaiya’s empire, the Guddu-Bablu partnership, Munna’s insecurities, Compounder’s loyalty and Guddu’s relationship with Sweety. Seasons 2 and 3 add emotional context for longtime fans, but they are not required preparation for a story that deliberately turns the calendar back to 2018.

Is The Movie Connected To ‘Mirzapur’ Season 4?

It shares the same characters and universe, but it is not the bridge into Season 4. Shweta Tripathi has stated that Season 4 will continue from Season 3, whereas the movie is a separate, complete story embedded in Season 1. Ali Fazal has also said the film has nothing to do with Seasons 3, 4 or later chapters.
