Everything to know about Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s ‘Alpha’.

When Yash Raj Films (YRF) announced that their Spy Universe was getting its first female-led installment, expectations were sky-high. Released globally on July 3, ‘Alpha’ flipped the script on the testosterone-heavy franchise. Trading the brute force of Tiger and the slick swagger of Kabir for a gritty, emotionally charged origin story of two estranged assassins, the film pushed the universe into uncharted sci-fi and bio-warfare territory. Helmed by Shiv Rawail, who previously directed ‘The Railway Men’, the film was marketed as a stylish action entertainer built around two women at the centre of a high-stakes espionage story.

Whether you are debating buying a ticket, trying to make sense of the ending, or tracking its box office performance, here is everything you need to know about ‘Alpha’.

What Is ‘Alpha’ About?

'Alpha' is an edgy, high-stakes origin story about a girl raised and built to kill. The narrative centres on twin sisters, Sita (Alia Bhatt) and Durga (Sharvari), who are separated at a hospital right after birth following a tragic incident. Their biological father, RAW Chief Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), is manipulated into believing that his elder daughter (Sita) is dead.

Sita is raised in complete isolation and trained into a lethal, remorseless covert operative by Lt. Col. Fateh Singh Lakhawat (Bobby Deol), the man she grows up believing is her father. However, Fateh is actually a rogue ex-soldier obsessed with developing the "Alpha serum" – a biochemical weapon designed to create superhuman soldiers with enhanced healing and hearing abilities.

When Sita uncovers the devastating secret of her stolen childhood and Fateh’s true identity, she goes rogue. Her quest for vengeance leads her to RAW Chief Vikrant Kaul and her estranged twin, Durga, a tactical operative raised in Spain. Together, the sisters join forces to hunt down the man who destroyed their family and stop the Alpha serum from falling into the wrong hands.

The Makers And The Complete Cast

‘Alpha’ stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead roles. Alia plays Sita, the trained assassin at the centre of the film, while Sharvari plays Durga. Bobby Deol plays Fateh Singh, the main antagonist, and Anil Kapoor plays RAW Chief Vikrant Kaul. The film is directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. Akshaye Widhani is credited as co-producer. The story is by Uday Chopra, while the screenplay is written by Soumil Shukla and Shridhar Raghavan. Ishita Moitra has written the dialogues. The film’s action has been designed by Craig Macrae and Sunil Rodrigues, while Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara have worked on the background score.

How ‘Alpha’ Fits Into the YRF Spy Universe

‘Alpha’ marks the seventh official entry into the interconnected YRF Spy Universe (following Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3, and War 2).

Unlike previous entries that focused on established veteran agents going rogue or saving the nation from nuclear threats, ‘Alpha’ serves as a foundational origin story. It expands the lore of the intelligence agency (RAW) through Anil Kapoor's character, Vikrant Kaul, offering a look at the bureaucratic and personal sacrifices of India's top spies. Furthermore, the introduction of the “Alpha serum” subtly shifts the Spy Universe slightly away from grounded espionage and closer to Captain America-style bio-enhancements, setting up massive, superhuman stakes for future crossover films.

Cameos

No YRF Spy Universe film is complete without a crossover appearance from a fellow franchise heavyweight. Hrithik Roshan reprises his role from ‘War’ franchise for an extended, roughly 10-minute cameo. His appearance serves as a narrative bridge, acknowledging the existence of the newly minted female operatives and anchoring ‘Alpha’ firmly within the broader timeline of the Spyverse.

Dia Mirza also appears in a cameo as Janki, Sita and Durga’s mother, and her presence adds emotional weight to the family track revealed later in the film.

Interestingly, ‘Alpha’ does not have a post-credit or end-credit scene. Unlike some other franchise films that keep viewers waiting for a final teaser, ‘Alpha’ wraps up its story before the credits begin.

The Ending Explained

Spoilers ahead.

The climax of ‘Alpha’ culminates in a brutal, highly emotional showdown. Sita and Durga successfully corner Fateh Singh Lakhawat, dismantling his operation and halting the mass production of the Alpha serum.

In the film's defining moment, RAW Chief Vikrant Kaul finally stands side-by-side with the daughter he thought he lost. Looking at the defeated Fateh, Vikrant Kaul issues a chilling, definitive order to Sita: "Kill him… For your family, for yourself, and for the nation." Sita executes the man who raised her, finally avenging her stolen childhood. The film closes by solidifying Sita and Durga as lethal, officially sanctioned assets of RAW, leaving the door wide open for them to team up with Pathaan, Tiger, or Kabir in the future.

Box Office Collection Updates

Releasing alongside the ongoing theatrical run of Akshay Kumar's ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, ‘Alpha’ faced a divided audience and mixed critical reviews, making its box-office journey a subject of intense trade scrutiny. However, it capitalized on strategic weekday ticket pricing to maintain a steady graph.

The movie has so far made Rs 49 crore in India and Rs 82 crore worldwide. The film opened at Rs 9.25 crore net in India on Friday, grew to Rs 11.5 crore net on Saturday and reached Rs 13.25 crore net on Sunday. However, it saw a sharp Monday drop before recovering slightly on Tuesday.

While ‘Alpha’ currently holds the record for the lowest opening in the YRF Spy Universe, the stable weekday holds suggest it is slowly finding its audience. Trade analysts are closely watching to see if it can cross the coveted Rs 100 crore mark before major releases hit screens next week.

OTT Release Details

For those waiting to stream the action from their living rooms, you will have to wait for the standard theatrical window to close.

Streaming Platform: Netflix

The Details: Yash Raj Films reportedly rejected a massive direct-to-OTT offer from Netflix to release ‘Alpha’ exclusively on their platform, insisting on a theatrical rollout to protect the cinematic brand of the Spy Universe. However, as per YRF’s ongoing multi-year licensing deal with Netflix (which previously brought The Railway Men and Maharaj to the platform), Netflix holds the exclusive post-theatrical streaming rights. The film is expected to drop on the platform roughly eight weeks after its July 3 theatrical release. However, the exact OTT premiere date has not been confirmed by the makers yet.

Alpha Review And Audience Response

The response to ‘Alpha’ has been mixed. The performances of Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, the action choreography and the film’s scale have received attention, while the screenplay and emotional depth have divided viewers. Bobby Deol’s role as the antagonist and Hrithik Roshan’s cameo as Kabir have also become major talking points.

The film is being discussed as both a milestone and a test. On one hand, it gives the YRF Spy Universe its first female-led chapter. On the other, it also arrives at a time when audiences have become more demanding about franchise storytelling. Big action, slick visuals and cameos are no longer enough unless the emotional stakes also land strongly.

Why Alpha Matters For The YRF Spy Universe

The importance of ‘Alpha’ lies in what it represents. For the first time, the Spy Universe is not being led by Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan. Instead, the film places Alia Bhatt and Sharvari at the centre of the action. That makes ‘Alpha’ a crucial expansion point for YRF. It gives the franchise new characters, a new division and a chance to bring female-led action into the mainstream spy space. If Sita and Durga return in future films, they could become part of larger crossover missions with Kabir, Pathaan or Tiger.

The film’s ending strongly suggests that YRF is not treating ‘Alpha’ as a one-off experiment. It is building a new branch within the Spy Universe. For now, ‘Alpha’ stands as a major franchise moment: a female-led action film inside Bollywood’s biggest spy universe, backed by a major star cast, and a clear attempt to move the franchise into its next phase.
