Independence Day is one of the most lucrative dates on Bollywood’s release calendar. A national holiday, an extended weekend and audiences’ appetite for big-screen entertainment frequently encourage multiple producers to target the same window. The result has been some unforgettable box-office face-offs involving superstars, sequels, patriotic dramas, comedies and ambitious historical spectacles. Some clashes produced one undisputed blockbuster, while others allowed two very different films to succeed simultaneously. There have also been occasions when the film that earned more was still a commercial failure because of its massive cost.

Independence Day 2026 has brought another major Bollywood box-office battle. Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani’s ‘Awarapan 2’ has gone up against Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s ‘Batwara 1947’, with both films arriving in cinemas today, August 14. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, ‘Awarapan 2’ marks Emraan’s return as Shivam Pandit nearly two decades after the original film. ‘Batwara 1947’, meanwhile, is a Partition-era drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Interestingly, both movies also feature veteran actress Shabana Azmi.

As ‘Awarapan 2’ and ‘Batwara 1947’ begin their box-office face-off, here is a look back at 10 of Bollywood’s biggest Independence Day clashes and the films that ultimately emerged victorious.

1. War 2 Vs Coolie - 2025

A Bollywood tentpole collided with a Tamil megastar vehicle when ‘War 2’ and ‘Coolie’ arrived on August 14, 2025. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, ‘War 2’ starred Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana and Anil Kapoor. The YRF Spy Universe sequel followed former RAW agent Kabir Dhaliwal, who is declared a threat to national security and pursued by Jr NTR’s Vikram.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Coolie’ featured Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Upendra and Sathyaraj, with Aamir Khan making a special appearance. The action thriller revolved around a former coolie union leader investigating his friend’s death and uncovering a dangerous criminal network. ‘Coolie’ won the all-language battle, collecting approximately Rs 285.01 crore net in India and Rs 518 crore worldwide. ‘War 2’ ended with around Rs 236.55 crore net domestically and Rs 364.35 crore worldwide. However, considering the films’ enormous reported costs, neither performance matched the extraordinary expectations attached to the clash. ‘War 2’ was regarded as a flop, while ‘Coolie’ fared better commercially.

2. Stree 2 Vs Khel Khel Mein Vs Vedaa - 2024

Independence Day 2024 delivered a rare three-way Bollywood clash. Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy ‘Stree 2’, starring Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana, brought the residents of Chanderi together against a new headless supernatural threat called Sarkata. Mudassar Aziz’s ‘Khel Khel Mein’ starred Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Ammy Virk, Aditya Seal and Pragya Jaiswal as friends whose relationships unravel after they agree to share every message and call received on their phones. Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Vedaa’, featuring John Abraham, Sharvari, Abhishek Banerjee and Ashish Vidyarthi, followed a young Dalit woman fighting caste oppression with help from a disgraced former Army officer.

All three films opened on August 15, 2024, although ‘Stree 2’ also held paid previews the previous evening. The horror comedy demolished its competition, earning approximately Rs 857 crore worldwide. ‘Khel Khel Mein’ showed some endurance but finished at Rs 57 crore, while ‘Vedaa’ collected Rs 30 crore; both were classified as flops.

3. Gadar 2 Vs OMG 2 - 2023

‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’ proved that a clash does not always have to destroy one of the competing films. Both arrived on August 11, 2023, offering audiences radically different experiences. Anil Sharma’s ‘Gadar 2’ reunited Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma. Set against the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, the sequel followed Tara Singh as he crossed the border once again, this time to rescue his imprisoned son.

Written and directed by Amit Rai, ‘OMG 2’ starred Pankaj Tripathi, Akshay Kumar and Yami Gautam Dhar. It revolved around a devout father who takes a school and the education system to court after his teenage son is expelled and humiliated, opening a larger conversation about s*x education.

‘Gadar 2’ was the overwhelming numerical winner, becoming an all-time blockbuster with approximately Rs 686 crore worldwide. Nevertheless, ‘OMG 2’ was no casualty: positive word of mouth carried it to a strong Rs 221 crore worldwide, making it a successful film in its own right.

4. Laal Singh Chaddha Vs Raksha Bandhan - 2022

Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar faced each other on August 11, 2022. Directed by Advait Chandan, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ starred Aamir, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya. The official Hindi adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’ traced the extraordinary journey of a kind-hearted man whose personal life intersects with significant moments in Indian history.

Aanand L Rai’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’ featured Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar. The family drama centred on a brother determined to arrange the marriages of his four sisters before beginning his own life with his childhood sweetheart.

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ won the collection race with Rs 133 crore worldwide, compared with Raksha Bandhan’s Rs 68 crore. ‘Raksha Bandhan’ was made on a reported budget of Rs 70 crore, while Laal Singh Chaddha’s budget was Rs 180 crore. So, both films were theatrical flops because of their budgets.

5. Mission Mangal Vs Batla House - 2019

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham went head-to-head on August 15, 2019. Jagan Shakti’s ‘Mission Mangal’ starred Akshay, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari and Sharman Joshi. Loosely inspired by the scientists behind India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, the film dramatized an under-resourced team’s attempt to place a satellite in Mars’ orbit.

Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Batla House’ featured John Abraham, Mrunal Thakur and Ravi Kishan. Inspired by the controversial 2008 Batla House encounter, the film followed a police officer dealing with public scrutiny, political pressure and personal trauma after the operation.

‘Mission Mangal’ secured the victory, collecting Rs 291 crore worldwide. ‘Batla House’ was overshadowed but still found its audience, finishing with Rs 127 worldwide. Together, the films demonstrated that patriotic and nationally relevant subjects could coexist during the holiday.

6. Gold Vs Satyameva Jayate - 2018

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham had previously competed on August 15, 2018. Directed by Reema Kagti, ‘Gold’ starred Akshay, Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh and Sunny Kaushal. The period sports drama followed hockey manager Tapan Das and his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal for independent India.

Milap Milan Zaveri’s ‘Satyameva Jayate’ featured John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Aisha Sharma and Amruta Khanvilkar. The action drama revolved around a man killing corrupt police officers while an upright officer attempted to uncover his identity and motives.

‘Gold’ earned more in absolute terms, collecting Rs 158 crore worldwide against Satyameva Jayate’s Rs 121 crore. However, their trade verdicts told a different story. Bollywood Hungama classified the more expensive ‘Gold’ as an average performer, while ‘Satyameva Jayate’ was declared a super-hit because of its stronger returns relative to cost.

7. Rustom Vs Mohenjo Daro - 2016

One of the decade’s most closely watched star clashes unfolded on August 12, 2016. Tinu Suresh Desai’s ‘Rustom’ starred Akshay Kumar, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Arjan Bajwa, Pavan Malhotra and Kumud Mishra. Loosely inspired by the KM Nanavati case, it followed a naval officer who is prosecuted for killing his wife’s lover.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Mohenjo Daro’ featured Hrithik Roshan, Pooja Hegde, Kabir Bedi and Arunoday Singh. Set in the Indus Valley Civilisation, the historical adventure followed farmer Sarman as he entered Mohenjo-daro, fell in love and challenged the city’s oppressive ruler.

Despite Mohenjo Daro’s larger scale and screen count, ‘Rustom’ quickly took control of the contest. It collected Rs 216 crore worldwide. ‘Mohenjo Daro’ managed only Rs 107 crore worldwide.

8. Peepli Live Vs Help - 2010

Aamir Khan Productions’ modestly budgeted satire ‘Peepli Live’ competed with the supernatural horror film ‘Help’ on August 13, 2010. Written and directed by Anusha Rizvi, ‘Peepli Live’ starred Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghubir Yadav, Shalini Vatsa, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Malaika Shenoy and Naseeruddin Shah. The film followed Natha, a debt-ridden farmer who considers taking his own life after learning that his family could receive government compensation. Once a local journalist reports his plan, Natha becomes the centre of a sensational media circus and an increasingly cynical political contest.

Directed by Rajeev Virani, ‘Help’ starred Bobby Deol and Mugdha Godse, with Shreyas Talpade making a special appearance. The horror film revolved around a filmmaker and his wife who travel to Mauritius following her father’s illness, only to encounter a malevolent spirit connected to the wife’s disturbing childhood.

Despite its unconventional subject and absence of mainstream stars, ‘Peepli Live’ dominated the clash through strong reviews and word of mouth. It collected approximately Rs 30.41 crore net in India and Rs 47 crore worldwide. ‘Help’ managed only around Rs 2.58 crore net and emerged as a theatrical flop. ‘Peepli Live’ was later selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 83rd Academy Awards, although it did not receive a nomination.

9. Kaminey Vs Life Partner - 2009

Shahid Kapoor and Govinda led contrasting releases on August 14, 2009. Written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, ‘Kaminey’ starred Shahid in a double role alongside Priyanka Chopra and Amole Gupte. The dark crime caper followed estranged twins Charlie and Guddu, whose lives collided with corrupt police officers, politicians and drug traffickers.

Rumi Jaffery’s romantic comedy ‘Life Partner’ brought together Govinda, Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D’Souza and Prachi Desai. It explored three men with sharply different attitudes towards love, marriage and divorce.

‘Kaminey’ was affected by cinema closures in Maharashtra during the swine-flu outbreak but still comfortably led the battle, earning approximately Rs 70 crore worldwide. ‘Life Partner’ collected Rs 32 crore.

10. Bachna Ae Haseeno Vs God Tussi Great Ho - 2008

Two star-driven romantic comedies released on August 15, 2008. Siddharth Anand’s ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ featured Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba. Ranbir played Raj, a carefree womaniser who decides to revisit women he hurt and seek their forgiveness after experiencing heartbreak himself.

Rumi Jaffery’s ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ starred Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sohail Khan. The fantasy comedy followed a frustrated man who repeatedly blames God for his failures and is consequently granted divine powers to discover whether he can run the world any better.

‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ won with approximately Rs 62 crore worldwide. ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ collected only Rs 20 crore. Ranbir’s romantic comedy also enjoyed far greater recall through its music and performances.
