Bollywood’s sequel culture is no longer restricted to immediately extending a successful film. Producers are increasingly reopening stories that audiences first encountered 10, 20 or even nearly 30 years ago. While nostalgia provides these projects with instant recognition, their commercial outcomes have varied dramatically. ‘Gadar 2’ transformed an old blockbuster into a modern box-office phenomenon, whereas films such as ‘Sadak 2’ demonstrated that affection for an original does not automatically transfer to its successor.

The trend has become particularly prominent in 2026. ‘Border 2’, ‘Cocktail 2’ and ‘Awarapan 2’ have already arrived in cinemas, while ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla 2’ is preparing to reunite audiences with its much-loved middle-class Delhi universe. From direct continuations to spiritual sequels built around new characters, here are several Bollywood films that returned – or are returning – with another installment after a gap of at least a decade.

Without further ado, check out the list here:
1. Awarapan And Awarapan 2 - 19 Years
Mohit Suri’s ‘Awarapan’ was released on June 29, 2007 and starred Emraan Hashmi, Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma and Ashutosh Rana. The crime drama followed Shivam Pandit, a hardened gangster whose encounter with a trafficked woman awakens memories of his lost love and offers him a chance at redemption. Despite eventually developing a strong cult following – helped enormously by songs such as ‘Toh Phir Aao’ and ‘Tera Mera Rishta’ – the film was unsuccessful during its original theatrical run. It collected approximately Rs 7.76 crore net in India and Rs 12.18 crore worldwide.
Nineteen years later, Emraan returned as Shivam in ‘Awarapan 2’. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the sequel was released on August 14, 2026 and also stars Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi. The continuation has completely reversed the first film’s box-office fortunes. After opening at around Rs 22 crore net, it crossed the original’s entire lifetime business on its first day. By the end of its opening weekend, the film had earned over Rs 80 crore net in India and approximately Rs 110 crore worldwide.
2. Border And Border 2 - 29 Years
J.P. Dutta’s ‘Border’ was released on June 13, 1997. Featuring Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, Puneet Issar, Tabu and Pooja Bhatt, the war drama was inspired by the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. The film earned around Rs 39.46 crore net in India and Rs 54.53 crore worldwide, becoming one of the year’s biggest blockbusters and leaving behind an enduring soundtrack led by ‘Sandese Aate Hain’.
The franchise finally returned after 29 years with ‘Border 2’, which was released on January 23, 2026. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film brought back Sunny Deol and added Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty as military officers representing different branches of India’s armed forces. Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh appeared in supporting roles. The sequel emerged as a blockbuster, grossing approximately Rs 450 crore worldwide and proving that the emotional and patriotic pull of the original remained remarkably strong nearly three decades later.
3. Cocktail And Cocktail 2 - 14 Years
Homi Adajania’s ‘Cocktail’ was released on July 13, 2012. Starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty, the romantic drama explored the changing equation between Gautam, Veronica and Meera after friendship became complicated by love. The film collected Rs 71 crore net in India and approximately Rs 122.99 crore worldwide, while Deepika’s performance as the emotionally vulnerable Veronica became one of the major turning points of her career.
14 years later, Homi returned with the spiritual sequel ‘Cocktail 2’, released on June 19, 2026. Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna led the new romantic triangle, with an entirely different set of characters and circumstances. The film earned approximately Rs 147 crore worldwide.
4. Khosla Ka Ghosla And Khosla Ka Ghosla 2 - 20 Years
Dibakar Banerjee made his directorial debut with ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, released on September 22, 2006. Starring Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parvin Dabas, Tara Sharma, Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak, the comedy followed a Delhi family attempting to reclaim its plot of land from a property dealer. Its original theatrical business was modest – approximately Rs 4.59 crore net in India and Rs 6.70 crore worldwide – but the film’s sharp writing and accurate depiction of middle-class life gradually earned it cult status. It also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Two decades later, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla 2’ is set to revisit that universe. Umesh Bisht has taken over the director’s chair from Dibakar Banerjee, while Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parvin Dabas, Ranvir Shorey and Tara Sharma are among the returning actors. Huma Qureshi, Ravi Kishan and Divya Khossla are among the new additions. The sequel is scheduled to release theatrically on August 28, 2026.
5. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha And Gadar 2 - 22 Years
Released on June 15, 2001, ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ became one of the defining blockbusters of its era. Directed by Anil Sharma, it starred Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri. Set against Partition, the film followed Tara Singh’s journey to Pakistan to bring back his wife, Sakeena. It collected around Rs 76.88 crore net in India and approximately Rs 111.73 crore worldwide during its historic original run.
Anil Sharma reunited Sunny, Ameesha for ‘Gadar 2’, released on August 11, 2023. Set during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the sequel sent Tara Singh across the border once again, this time to rescue his son, Jeete. Few could have predicted the scale of its success: the film earned Rs 525.70 crore net in India and approximately Rs 686 crore worldwide. The 22-year wait therefore produced one of Indian cinema’s most commercially successful sequels and revived Sunny Deol’s box-office dominance.
6. OMG - Oh My God! And OMG 2 - 11 Years
Umesh Shukla’s satirical comedy ‘OMG – Oh My God!’ was released on September 28, 2012. Paresh Rawal played atheist shopkeeper Kanji Lalji Mehta, who takes religious institutions to court after an earthquake destroys his shop and his insurance claim is rejected as an “act of God”. Akshay Kumar appeared as Krishna, while Mithun Chakraborty, Govind Namdev and Om Puri played important roles. The film became a sleeper hit and earned approximately Rs 123.97 crore worldwide.
Its spiritual sequel, ‘OMG 2’, reached theatres on August 11, 2023, after an 11-year gap. Written and directed by Amit Rai, the film replaced Kanji’s story with that of Kanti Sharan Mudgal, played by Pankaj Tripathi, who fights a court case demanding comprehensive s*x education in schools. Yami Gautam appeared as the opposing lawyer, while Akshay played a divine messenger. Despite receiving an adults-only certificate and clashing with ‘Gadar 2’, the film became a major success, grossing approximately Rs 221 crore worldwide.
7. Son Of Sardaar And Son Of Sardaar 2 - 13 Years
Ashwni Dhir’s ‘Son Of Sardaar’ was released on November 13, 2012. The action comedy starred Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla, with Salman Khan making a special appearance. Ajay played Jassi, who unknowingly enters the home of a family determined to kill him over an old feud, only to discover that its strict code of hospitality protects him as long as he remains under its roof. Released alongside ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, the film performed strongly and grossed approximately Rs 161 crore worldwide.
The standalone follow-up ‘Son Of Sardaar 2’ was released on August 1, 2025 – almost 13 years later. Vijay Kumar Arora directed the sequel, which retained Ajay Devgn as Jassi but placed him in a new story set largely in Scotland. Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Deepak Dobriyal, Neeru Bajwa, Kubbra Sait, Chunky Panday and Vindu Dara Singh were among its ensemble cast. Unlike the original, the sequel failed to connect commercially, earning approximately Rs 66 crore worldwide.
8. Bhool Bhulaiyaa And Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 - 15 Years
Priyadarshan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ arrived in cinemas on October 12, 2007. Starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav, the psychological horror-comedy revolved around strange occurrences inside an ancestral palace and the legend of Manjulika. The film earned approximately Rs 49.10 crore net in India and Rs 82.35 crore worldwide, becoming a popular theatrical success.
Instead of continuing the same story, Anees Bazmee’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ functioned as a spiritual sequel with a new plot and characters. Released on May 20, 2022, it starred Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, Tabu and Rajpal Yadav. The film retained the franchise’s combination of ghosts, comedy, and romance while creating an independent story. It collected Rs 184.32 crore net in India and around Rs 265.50 crore worldwide, becoming a blockbuster.
9. Love Aaj Kal And Love Aaj Kal - 11 Years
Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’ was released on July 31, 2009 and starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Rishi Kapoor. Moving between two generations, it compared Jai and Meera’s modern relationship with Veer’s old-fashioned commitment to Harleen. The romantic drama collected approximately Rs 66.56 crore net in India and around Rs 116 crore worldwide, emerging as one of the successful Hindi films of 2009.
11 years later, Imtiaz revisited the same central idea with another film titled ‘Love Aaj Kal’, released on February 14, 2020. The spiritual successor starred Kartik Aaryan, Sara Ali Khan, and Randeep Hooda, with Kartik playing characters in two different time periods. The film earned approximately Rs 34.99 crore net in India and around Rs 52.63 crore worldwide. Although the title was not formally numbered, its parallel timelines, themes and shared filmmaker positioned it as a successor to the 2009 film. The mixed response, however, showed that repeating a familiar structure was not enough to reproduce the emotional impact of the original.
10. Sadak And Sadak 2 - 29 Years
Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, ‘Sadak’ was released on December 20, 1991. The romantic action drama starred Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt, with Sadashiv Amrapurkar delivering a memorable performance as the villainous Maharani. It followed taxi driver Ravi’s efforts to rescue Pooja from a brothel and the violent trafficking network controlling her. The film was among the notable commercial successes of 1991.
Mahesh Bhatt returned to direction after a long break for ‘Sadak 2’, released directly on Disney+ Hotstar on August 28, 2020. Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt reprised their characters, while Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Jisshu Sengupta joined the cast. Because the film skipped cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic, it had no box-office collection. Despite the 29-year gap and the reunion of the original actor-director team, ‘Sadak 2’ received negative reviews and failed to recreate the cultural impact of its predecessor.
11. Bunty Aur Babli And Bunty Aur Babli 2 - 16 Years
Shaad Ali’s ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ was released on May 27, 2005 and starred Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan. The crime comedy followed Rakesh and Vimmi, two small-town dreamers who reinvent themselves as audacious con artists. Aishwarya Rai’s appearance in ‘Kajra Re’ provided the film with another major cultural moment. The film earned approximately Rs 36.25 crore net in India and Rs 62.74 crore worldwide, receiving a hit verdict.
Released on November 19, 2021, ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’ arrived 16 years later. Varun V. Sharma directed the sequel, with Rani returning as the original Babli and Saif Ali Khan replacing Abhishek as Bunty. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari played a younger pair of impostors using the famous criminal aliases, while Pankaj Tripathi appeared as a police officer. The sequel failed to match the original’s charm or business, earning Rs 12.50 crore net in India and approximately Rs 22.12 crore worldwide.
12. Hungama And Hungama 2 - 18 Years
Priyadarshan’s comedy ‘Hungama’ was released on August 1, 2003 and starred Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor and Tiku Talsania. Driven by mistaken identities, false marriages and escalating misunderstandings, the film became a popular comedy and grossed approximately Rs 21.25 crore worldwide against a modest budget.
Priyadarshan returned to direct ‘Hungama 2’, which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on July 23, 2021, after an 18-year wait. The spiritual sequel featured Paresh Rawal in a new storyline alongside Shilpa Shetty, Meezaan Jafri, Pranitha Subhash, Ashutosh Rana, Rajpal Yadav and Johnny Lever. Because the pandemic-era film bypassed theatres and received a direct-to-streaming release, it has no theatrical box-office total. Despite using the title and retaining some of the comic talent associated with the first film, it received a considerably weaker response.
From record-breaking returns such as ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘Border 2’ to unsuccessful revivals like ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’ and ‘Son Of Sardaar 2’, these films prove that familiarity alone cannot guarantee a successful sequel. Nostalgia may bring audiences through the doors, but it is ultimately the story that decides if a long-delayed comeback is truly worth the wait.
