‘Dhurandhar 2’ Lands In Legal Trouble Over Alleged Unauthorised Use Of ‘Tirchi Topiwale’
Production house Trimurti Films has sued Aditya Dhar’s production house over unauthorised use of ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ song in ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’.
While filmmaker Aditya Dhar and actor Ranveer Singh have every reason to celebrate the historic box office run of ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, a significant legal cloud has cast a shadow over their success. Bollywood production giant Trimurti Films has officially filed a lawsuit against Aditya Dhar’s production house, B62 Studios, alleging the unauthorised use of the iconic track ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ in the blockbuster sequel. According to several reports, the lawsuit centres on the claim that ‘Dhurandhar 2’ features a version of the song ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ without obtaining the requisite licenses or permissions.

The original track, a cult classic from the 1989 film ‘Tridev’, was co-composed by Kalyanji-Anandji with lyrics by Anand Bakshi and vocals by Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukerji.
Trimurti Films, which asserts ownership and control over the musical work and sound recording rights, alleged that the use of the song amounts to copyright infringement. The production house has specifically pointed to the unauthorised reproduction and communication of the work to the public. In its suit, Trimurti Films is seeking an injunction to restrain further use of the song, along with damages and other consequential reliefs.

The controversy stems from the song ‘Rang De Lal’ in ‘Dhurandhar 2’, which partially incorporates the ‘Tirchi Topiwale’ track. While the new version is remixed and composed by Shashwat Sachdev and features new vocals and lyrics, Trimurti Films maintains that the core musical identity remains unauthorised.
Interestingly, the music credits for ‘Rang De Lal’ on platforms like YouTube do acknowledge the original creators, listing Kalyanji-Anandji and Anand Bakshi alongside Shashwat Sachdev and Jasmine Sandlas. However, the legal argument hinges on whether the commercial rights were formally transferred for this new adaptation.
This legal battle comes at a time when ‘Dhurandhar 2’ is shattering records globally. The spy-action thriller has already crossed the monumental Rs 1,000 crore mark in net domestic collections. Globally, the film has amassed over Rs 1,653 crore, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of 2026.
The film is currently on track to challenge the lifetime worldwide total of ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’ (Rs 1,742.10 crore). If it surpasses this milestone, it could become the third highest-grossing Indian film of all time – a feat achieved without a release in the Chinese market.
‘Dhurandhar 2’ explores the origin story of Ranveer Singh’s character, Jaskirat Singh Rangi, tracing his transformation into spy Hamza Ali Mazari. The high-octane drama features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun, with a special cameo by Yami Gautam.
The film's music, handled by Shashwat Sachdev, was produced under intense timelines. Director Aditya Dhar recently shared on social media that Sachdev composed 14 songs in just 11 days for the sequel, also completing the background score in a mere 3 days. While Aditya Dhar praised the "personal and intense" collaboration with Sachdev, this speed and volume of work now face the hurdle of a high-stakes legal battle.
As the film continues to rule theatres, it remains to be seen how the court will address the claims of one of Bollywood’s legacy production houses against its newest box office king.
