Indian actress and politician Kangana Ranaut's upcoming Hindi film ‘Emergency’ was slated to release in cinemas on September 6, 2024. But the movie got postponed after it got embroiled in several controversies, and did not get the necessary clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Finally, there is some respite for Kangana Ranaut as ‘Emergency’ has finally received the go-ahead from the CBFC. The Bollywood actress took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the update.

Kangana Ranaut wrote on X, “We are glad to announce we have received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency, we will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support.” She also added Indian tricolour emoji.

For the unversed, Kangana Ranaut will play the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the film will revolve around the 21-month emergency period imposed by Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977.

As per reports, Kangana Ranaut, who also serves as the film’s producer and director, has accepted some cuts suggested by the censor board. Earlier, Kangana had alleged that the film’s clearance was “stopped” due to threats made against CBFC members.

Kangana had said, “There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in. Death threats. The Censor Board members are getting threats. We are under pressure not to show the assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to show Bhindranwale, not to show the Punjab riots. I don’t know what will be left to show then… This is unbelievable for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in this country.”

‘Emergency’ faced backlash from several Sikh groups for the portrayal of the Sikh community. Certain Sikh organisations such as Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, then demanded that the film should be banned.

The outrage was caused after certain glimpses from the film showed Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to be in cahoots with Indira Gandhi.

Apart from Kangana Ranaut, ‘Emergency’ will also feature Anupam Kher, the late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman. The movie has been backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
