‘Toxic’ Box Office: Yash Beats Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’ Day 1 In Just Hours

Yash has once again demonstrated his immense pull at the box office. Despite facing criticism over its content, production delays, and plenty of pre-release discussion surrounding its depiction of violence and women, ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’ has opened to a thunderous response in theatres on Wednesday, August 26. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the action drama arrived in theatres during the Onam holiday and immediately made its presence felt across multiple markets. Early figures indicate that the film is enjoying strong footfall nationwide, with the Kannada original and Hindi version emerging as major contributors to its opening-day momentum.
The film had already built enormous anticipation before reaching theatres, and that interest has translated into strong audience turnout. According to early estimates reported by Sacnilk, ‘Toxic’ had collected around Rs 48.53 crore nett across India by 2 PM on Wednesday, across all languages. The Hindi release was leading the initial numbers with more than Rs 24.27 crore, while the Kannada version had crossed the Rs 13 crore mark by the same point.
The response to the Kannada edition has been particularly impressive, with morning shows recording occupancy of around 85 per cent. The Telugu-dubbed version has also contributed significantly to the film's opening, while the Tamil and Malayalam markets have started at a comparatively slower pace.
One of the most striking aspects of Toxic's early performance is its comparison with ‘Dhurandhar’, which emerged as one of India's biggest blockbusters last year. Ranveer Singh's film opened with approximately Rs 28 crore net domestically before gaining considerable momentum through positive word-of-mouth. ‘Toxic’, however, had already moved past that opening figure during its morning shows alone, underlining the scale of the initial response to Yash's latest release.
However, ‘Toxic’ still has a significant benchmark ahead of it. The opening-day record for the Kannada film industry remains with Yash's own 'KGF: Chapter 2', which registered a spectacular Rs 116 crore opening day collection.
Interest in 'Toxic' was evident during its advance-sales campaign, which began early on August 21. By the time pre-bookings closed on Wednesday morning, the film had reportedly sold more than 18 lakh tickets for its first day. The advance sales generated close to Rs 60 crore in gross revenue, giving the film a formidable base even before the first show began.
Speaking of the pan-India film, 'Toxic' has opened to negative reviews from critics, and it remains to be seen how the film performs from the second day itself. Earlier, Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' was panned by the critics, but the film did massive business in India, crossing the Rs 800 crore mark.
'Toxic' brings Yash together with an ensemble cast that includes Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth, and Tara Sutaria. The film's release has also been accompanied by considerable debate over its content. Discussions around its violent sequences and intimate material intensified in the run-up to its theatrical arrival. The Central Board of Film Certification had cleared 'Toxic' with an 'A' certificate and reportedly did not mandate cuts.
