Days Ahead Of Release, Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Banned In Bangladesh: Report
Kangana Ranaut's upcoming movie ‘Emergency’ has reportedly been banned in Bangladesh.

Bollywood actress and politician Kangana Ranaut is all set to play the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. ‘Emergency’, which has been embroiled in controversies, is finally set to release in theatres on Friday, January 17. However, days ahead of its release, the makers are facing a big blow as ‘Emergency’ has been banned in Bangladesh. As per a report in The Indian Express, the film has been banned due to the ongoing “strained relations” between India and Bangladesh.
For the unversed, the upcoming movie is set to delve deep into the socio-political events of the Emergency period, which was imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975.
“The decision to halt the screening of Emergency in Bangladesh is tied to the current strained relations between India and Bangladesh. The ban is less about the content of the film and more about the ongoing political dynamics between the two nations,” The Indian Express quoted a source as saying.
‘Emergency’ will also showcase India's role in Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence and how Indira Gandhi and her government lent support to Shaikh Mujibur Rehman, the Father of Bangladesh. The Hindi film will also depict the assassination of Rehman at the hands of Bangladeshi extremists.
The upcoming Hindi movie was earlier slated to release in theatres on September 6, 2024. However, the film faced multiple delays after failing to receive a clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
‘Emergency’, now releasing a week before Republic Day, will get one week's free run in theatres before Akshay Kumar's ‘Skyforce’ arrives in cinemas.
The Kangana Ranaut directorial previously faced backlash from several Sikh groups for the portrayal of the Sikh community. Certain Sikh organisations such as Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, then demanded that the film should be banned.
The outrage was caused after certain glimpses from the film showed Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to be in cahoots with Indira Gandhi. As per reports, Kangana Ranaut, who also serves as the film’s producer, then accepted some cuts suggested by the censor board.
Earlier, Kangana had alleged that the film’s clearance was “stopped” due to threats made against CBFC members.
“There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in,” Kangana had said.
Apart from Kangana Ranaut, ‘Emergency’ will also feature Anupam Kher, the late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman. The movie has been backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
The upcoming Hindi movie will mark Kangana Ranaut’s first solo directorial venture. Before this, she had co-directed the film ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ with Krish Jagarlamudi.
