‘Emergency’ will be releasing a week before Republic Day. The film will get one week's free run in theatres before Akshay Kumar's ‘Skyforce’ arrives in cinemas.
Earlier, the film was slated to release in cinemas in September 2024. However, it was postponed after the film did not receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
‘Emergency’ faced backlash from several Sikh groups for the portrayal of the Sikh community. Certain Sikh organisations such as Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, then demanded that the film should be banned.
The outrage was caused after certain glimpses from the film showed Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to be in cahoots with Indira Gandhi. As per reports, Kangana Ranaut, who also serves as the film’s producer and director, then accepted some cuts suggested by the censor board.
Earlier, Kangana had alleged that the film’s clearance was “stopped” due to threats made against CBFC members.
“There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in. Death threats. The Censor Board members are getting threats. We are under pressure not to show the assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to show Bhindranwale, not to show the Punjab riots. I don’t know what will be left to show then… This is unbelievable for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in this country,” Kangana had said.
