Jaya Bachchan Says Women Who Offer To Pay On Dates Are “Stupid”, Says “Let Men Pay”
Jaya Bachchan recently featured on the ‘What the Hell Navya’ podcast, and mentioned that women offering to pay on dates are “stupid”.

With equal opportunities come equal responsibilities. While the world has advanced over the years with girls taking care of their own bills, veteran actress Jaya Bachchan thinks women offering to take care of bills on dates are “stupid”. Surprised by her statement? Jaya Bachchan made this comment during her appearance on her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s ‘What The Hell Navya’ podcast. In a change of pace on the podcast, which usually explores women’s issues, host Navya invited her brother-actor Agastya Nanda to get a male perspective about modern men and masculinity.
Regular guests Jaya Bachchan and her daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda were also a part of the recent podcast episode titled ‘Macho Myths and Modern Men’. They discussed how the idea of masculinity has changed over the years.
When Navya Naveli Nanda brought up the topic of women feeling independent and wanting to pay for the food on dates, Jaya Bachchan remarked they were “stupid” to do that.
Navya Naveli Nanda was explaining how “after feminism and women feeling more empowered” many of them want to do things independently. She said, “For example, today, if you take a girl out on a date and you offer to pay, some people get offended by that. Because women now feel they’re equally…”
Before she could complete her sentence, Jaya Bachchan chimed in and said, “How stupid of those women. You should let the men pay.”
Navya Naveli Nanda continued, “No, but I’m saying these are things that happen. That ‘Oh we can open the door for ourselves. You don’t need to open it for us.’ So, where do you draw that line? Are you opening doors for people? Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve been chivalrous but a woman has said, I can do that myself?”
Jaya Bachchan chimed in again and added, “Basically what they’re trying to say is – don’t be chivalrous. How stupid is that?”
But Agastya Nanda had a completely different take on it, explaining the difference between chivalry and toxicity. He said, “As long as you’re doing it to be polite, and not show ‘I’m the man,’ you can’t go wrong. If you’re opening the door not to be like, ‘I’m the one opening the door’ instead you’re doing it because ‘I want to help you,’ it’s never going to come across the wrong way.”
He further explained, “If you want to say, I’d love to pay for this meal, it’s not going to come across, the wrong way because you’re doing it to do something kind. Not like ‘I’m the provider, so I’ll pay.’ It’s the intent.”
Navya Naveli Nanda also asked her mother and grandmother if they’ve noticed any difference in how men used to be when they were younger as compared to what they’re like now, and Shweta Bachchan Nanda said, “There was always that thing that a man has to be strong and silent. Even when you’re dating, you’re waiting for the guy to come up to you, the guy to propose.”
Jaya Bachchan then said, “I would like that. It’s better for a man to propose, I’d be very awkward.”
