Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran are set to share the screen for the first time in 'Daayra', a crime thriller that places the two actors on opposite sides of a difficult question, can justice be achieved when the law itself appears to stand in the way? The trailer for Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film was released on Monday, offering a tense glimpse into a story inspired by true events. Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj portrays DCP Raman Kumar, a police officer whose methods come under scrutiny following a gang rape investigation.

The trailer opens with an emotionally charged search as a woman desperately searches for her missing daughter. The narrative then shifts towards Raman, who is shown taking juvenile suspects to an isolated location before shooting them. The incident is subsequently presented as an encounter. That immediately brings Kareena’s character into the investigation.

Ajooni begins examining Raman’s actions and revisits three previous encounters that he carried out while claiming self-defence. As she digs deeper into the latest case, the film sets up an ideological clash between the two police officers: one determined to operate within the legal system and the other convinced that conventional justice cannot always address brutal crimes.

The investigation progresses through questioning, reconstruction of the crime scene and scrutiny of Raman’s actions. Yet the police officer appears unmoved by the criticism. Ajooni, however, reminds him that one of the accused was close to turning 17, bringing the issue of juvenile protection into the centre of the conflict.
Kareena’s character insists that she works within the legal framework, while Raman questions whether those protections should apply in cases involving crimes of extreme brutality. The central question posed by 'Daayra' is therefore not simply who is right or wrong, but whether the pursuit of justice can ever justify stepping outside the boundaries of the law.
Co-written and directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film is backed by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios. It marks the first collaboration between Kareena and Prithviraj, both of whom appear to be taking on roles considerably removed from a conventional hero-versus-villain dynamic.
'Daayra' also marks an important return for Kareena. The actress is set to make her first theatrical appearance in two years, following 'Singham Again' in 2024, where she featured alongside Ajay Devgn in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 18. Notably, lyricist Gulzar has previously confirmed that the film will not feature songs, keeping the focus firmly on its dramatic and investigative narrative.
The project is also Kareena’s first collaboration with Meghna Gulzar, whose body of work has frequently revolved around real-life events and socially charged subjects.
From 'Talvar', which drew inspiration from the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case, to 'Chhapaak' and 'Sam Bahadur', Meghna has developed a filmmaking style centred on serious subjects and character-driven storytelling.
