'Border 2', directed by Anurag Singh, is all set to take a bumper opening at the box office when the film hits the theatres on Friday, January 23. The new Hindi movie, which stars Varun Dhawan, Sunny Deol, Ahan Shetty and Diljit Dosanjh, has a runtime of more than 3 hours. However, the lengthy haul is not expected to prove a deterrent, as the film is riding on a massive nostalgia wave. 'Border 2', a sequel to the 1997 smash-hit 'Border', is looking at an opening of more than Rs 30 crore.
If this number is achieved, the film would record the biggest opening for any Hindi film in 2026. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, 'Border 2' has so far sold 2,32,697 tickets for the opening day, grossing Rs 7.31 crore. It is fair to assume that the movie will sell tickets worth Rs 10 crore by the time the film's first show on Friday approaches.
'Border 2' was cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification with a U/A 13+ certificate on Wednesday, two days before its release. However, the movie is still to receive the clearance in the Gulf countries, hence its release is expected to be stalled in countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia and more.
The new Hindi film is based on the 1971 Indo-Pak War. A sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 blockbuster period war drama, it has been produced by JP and daughter Nidhi Dutta and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series. The project also stars Anya Singh, Mona Singh and Sonam Bajwa.
Earlier this week, lyricist Javed Akhtar had revealed that he was approached by the makers of 'Border 2', to rewrite the popular songs from the original film. However, he refused the offer, citing “creative bankruptcy”.
“They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I really feel this is a kind of intellectual and creative bankruptcy. You have an old song, which did well, and you want to put it out again by adding something? Make new songs or else accept that you cannot do the same level of work. Whatever is bygone, let that be. What is the need to recreate it?,” Akhtar told India Today.
For the unversed, Border 2’s most popular song ‘Ghar Kab Aaoge’, which was originally composed by Anu Malik, added Mithoon as the additional music composer for the upcoming film. Roopkumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam returned to lend their voices to the rehashed version, while Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra, and Diljit Dosanjh joined in too.
