Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is back, and the box office has certainly noticed. Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’, which arrived in cinemas on October 15, 2026, collected Rs 59.70 crore India net across all languages on its opening day, according to Sacnilk. Add overseas business, and its first-day worldwide gross stands at Rs 125.25 crore. That is quite an entrance for a man supposedly enjoying retirement! Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, the sequel brings Rajinikanth back alongside Ramya Krishnan and Yogi Babu, with S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Mithun Chakraborty among its ensemble.

The guest list is equally starry: Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff return, while Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi add to the cameo excitement. Nelson Dilipkumar has clearly packed plenty of familiar faces into Tiger’s latest outing.
But has the sequel delivered Rajinikanth’s biggest opening? By Day 1 India net, it ranks third, behind ‘Coolie’ and ‘2.0’. Wondering how his five biggest opening films stack up? Here is the countdown, starting with the chart-topper:
1. Coolie - Rs 65 crore on Day 1
The crown still belongs to Deva. Released on August 14, 2025, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Coolie’ opened with Rs 65 crore India net, setting the benchmark that ‘Jailer 2’ has fallen Rs 5.30 crore short of. Its lifetime worldwide gross reached Rs 518 crore, according to Sacnilk. Rajinikanth led a formidable cast featuring Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir and Upendra, with Aamir Khan making a special appearance.
The action thriller follows Deva, a former coolie union leader whose investigation into a friend’s suspicious death pulls him into a dangerous criminal network. And despite all the speculation that accompanies a Lokesh Kanagaraj film, the director explicitly confirmed that ‘Coolie’ was a standalone outing outside his cinematic universe. Rajinikanth did not need a shared universe to deliver his biggest domestic opening.
2. 2.0 - Rs 60.25 crore on Day 1
Chitti is proving rather difficult to overtake. S. Shankar’s ambitious science-fiction spectacle, released on November 29, 2018, earned Rs 60.25 crore India net on its first day and finished with Rs 691 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. That leaves it just Rs 55 lakh ahead of ‘Jailer 2’ on the opening-day chart. The film starred Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson, bringing the scientist-and-robot double act back on a much larger canvas.
With Akshay supplying the menace and Rajinikanth returning as Dr Vaseegaran and Chitti, ‘2.0’ turned its technological ambitions into a major selling point. Shankar said the production was shot in 3D and involved around 2,150 visual-effects shots, with roughly 1,000 VFX artists contributing.
3. Jailer 2 - Rs 59.70 crore on Day 1
The newest entrant has gone straight into the top three. Released on October 15, 2026, Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel reunites Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan and Yogi Babu, while S. J. Suryah and Vidya Balan help expand the world around Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The retired jailer has another dangerous assignment on his hands, and the sequel’s parade of familiar stars gives fans plenty to cheer between the action set pieces.
Its Rs 59.70 crore India net opening comprises Rs 43.35 crore in Tamil, Rs 12.50 crore in Telugu, Rs 3.50 crore in Hindi and Rs 0.35 crore in Kannada. Sacnilk places the worldwide gross after Day 1 at Rs 125.25 crore, including Rs 55 crore overseas. The sequel has also improved on the original Jailer’s domestic opening by Rs 11.35 crore, or approximately 23.5 per cent. Its eventual lifetime total is still to come.
4. Jailer - Rs 48.35 crore on Day 1
Before the sequel’s star-studded return, the original introduced a quiet family man whose past was anything but quiet. Released on August 10, 2023, Nelson Dilipkumar’s ‘Jailer’ opened with Rs 48.35 crore India net and went on to collect Rs 604.50 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. Its central cast included Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Vasanth Ravi and Yogi Babu, with Tamannaah Bhatia also appearing.
The disappearance of Muthuvel Pandian’s policeman son sends the retired jailer into the path of a ruthless idol-smuggling operation. Nelson mixed the family drama and violence with his characteristic deadpan humour, while Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff supplied memorable star turns. Here is the intriguing box-office twist: ‘Jailer’ opened below ‘Coolie’ domestically, yet finished comfortably ahead of it worldwide.
5. Kabali - Rs 46 crore on Day 1
Long before Tiger’s return, ‘Kabali’ was turning a film release into a full-blown occasion. Pa. Ranjith’s gangster drama arrived on July 22, 2016, starring Rajinikanth, Radhika Apte, Sai Dhanshika and Winston Chao. Box Office India’s opening-week report recorded Rs 46 crore on its first day across India and all languages; its later worldwide tally listed the film at Rs 320 crore gross.
Rajinikanth played a Malaysian Tamil gangster emerging from a lengthy prison term, with family wounds running beneath the gang rivalries. Outside cinemas, the excitement reached cruising altitude: AirAsia operated a Kabali-themed flight carrying fans from Bengaluru to Chennai for the release. When even the aircraft joins the promotional campaign, an ordinary opening day is hardly on the itinerary.
‘Jailer 2’ has therefore made a strong start, with a bigger domestic opening than its predecessor and a place among Rajinikanth’s top three. ‘Coolie’ retains the India-net opening-day crown, while ‘2.0’ holds second place by a narrow margin. Tiger’s next challenge is to turn that first-day rush into a sustained theatrical run – and give those lifetime worldwide totals something new to worry about.
