There was a time when a Bollywood star appearing in a Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam film – and vice versa – was treated like an exotic detour. That map has been redrawn. Stars now move across languages, producers plan multilingual releases from day one and audiences are far less interested in an actor’s home industry than in whether the movie delivers a satisfying big-screen experience. ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’ arrived in theatres today (August 26), as a particularly starry example of that change.

Directed by Geetu Mohandas and shot simultaneously in Kannada and English, the period gangster drama places Yash at the centre of an ensemble that includes Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. Kiara plays Nadia, while Yash appears in a dual role as father and son. With talent arriving from Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam cinema, the film does not merely cross industries; it practically throws them all one very glamorous party.

1. Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash - Ramayana: Part One

Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana: Part One’ may be the most literal possible illustration of Indian cinema assembling one giant family. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi appears as Sita and Yash – who is also among the producers – takes on Raavan. Sunny Deol and Ravie Dubey are also part of the principal ensemble. The film is scheduled to release worldwide on November 6, 2026, just before Diwali.

The casting itself is the attraction: a major Hindi star, one of Tamil and Malayalam cinema’s most admired performers and Kannada cinema’s biggest pan-India name occupying the three defining roles of the epic. If ‘Toxic’ pairs Yash with Kiara in a gangster world, ‘Ramayana’ sends him to the opposite end of the moral battlefield – and places Ranbir and Sai Pallavi directly across from him.

2. Prabhas And Triptii Dimri - Spirit

After making ‘Animal’ with Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga is building his next collision of star systems around Prabhas and Triptii Dimri. ‘Spirit’ is written, edited and directed by Vanga and is officially scheduled for March 5, 2027. The project is planned for release in several Indian languages as well as Mandarin, Japanese and Korean.

Triptii joined the project after Deepika Padukone’s much-discussed exit, reuniting her with the filmmaker who gave her a scene-stealing part in ‘Animal’. Prabhas, meanwhile, continues to treat linguistic borders like minor speed breakers.

3. Mahesh Babu And Priyanka Chopra Jonas - Varanasi

SS Rajamouli’s first film after ‘RRR’ brings Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu together with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran. Titled ‘Varanasi’, the IMAX-scale action adventure is scheduled to open worldwide on April 7, 2027. Early footage has teased a globe-trotting, time-bending narrative with links to Hindu mythology. Priyanka plays Mandakini, while Mahesh Babu leads the film as Rudhra.

The combination has several layers of novelty. Mahesh Babu is working with SS Rajamouli for the first time, while Priyanka is returning to an Indian production after a long stretch of international work. Add Prithviraj to the equation and ‘Varanasi’ begins to resemble less a regional crossover than Indian cinema submitting a joint application for global spectacle status.

4. Allu Arjun And Deepika Padukone - Raaka

Atlee followed ‘Jawan’ by putting together another casting announcement designed to make the internet briefly forget all other subjects. His fantasy-action film ‘Raaka’, backed by Sun Pictures, stars Allu Arjun opposite Deepika Padukone. The title was unveiled in April 2026, and the project is slated for 2027. Reports have pointed to December 2027, but the makers have not announced a precise theatrical date.

Allu Arjun arrives after the ‘Pushpa’ films turned him into a nationwide phenomenon; Deepika already has major Telugu-film experience through ‘Kalki 2898 AD’; and Atlee proved with ‘Jawan’ that he knows how to build a Hindi blockbuster using the grammar of Tamil mass cinema.

5. Rajinikanth, Vidya Balan And Mithun Chakraborty - Jailer 2

Nelson Dilipkumar’s ‘Jailer 2’ will bring Rajinikanth back as “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian on October 15, 2026. Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are among the returning names, while Mithun Chakraborty has confirmed that he is part of the film. Vidya Balan has also been widely reported as a new addition, although the makers have revealed the ensemble in stages.

The first ‘Jailer’ already turned its guest appearances by Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar into theatre-erupting moments. The sequel appears determined to respond to that success with the only logical strategy: invite even more film industries into Rajinikanth’s orbit and hope cinemas have reinforced their roofs.

6. Akshaye Khanna, Bhoomi Shetty And Sriya Reddy - Mahakali

Fresh from a career phase full of formidable antagonists, Akshaye Khanna is crossing into a Telugu-rooted mythological universe as Shukracharya in ‘Mahakali’. Directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru and presented by filmmaker Prasanth Varma, the action adventure stars Bhoomi Shetty and Sriya Reddy, with Rohit Saraf also in the ensemble. It is scheduled for January 8, 2027.

Earlier Bollywood-South Collaborations

1. Hrithik Roshan And Jr NTR - War 2

Released on August 14, 2025, Ayan Mukerji’s ‘War 2’ brought Hrithik Roshan’s Kabir face to face with Jr NTR, with Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana completing the principal cast. On paper, it was crossover mathematics at its most irresistible: the star of ‘War’ against one half of ‘RRR’, inside the already established YRF Spy Universe.

The result proved that combining enormous fan bases is not the same as combining them successfully. The film ended its theatrical run at approximately Rs 365 crore worldwide, a substantial number that was nevertheless insufficient against its reported Rs 400 crore landing cost. The pairing created opening-weekend noise, but the film’s weak hold offered a useful reminder: a pan-India cast can sell the first ticket; the screenplay must sell the next one.

2. Jr NTR, Janhvi Kapoor And Saif Ali Khan - Devara: Part 1

Koratala Siva’s Telugu action drama ‘Devara: Part 1’, released on September 27, 2024, gave Jr NTR a double role and brought Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan into his coastal world. Prakash Raj and Srikanth were also part of the ensemble. Janhvi made her Telugu debut as Thangam, while Saif played Bhaira, the ally-turned-adversary with enough menace to make the sea look friendly.

The film received a mixed critical response but performed strongly in theatres. Its producers reported that it had crossed Rs 521 crore worldwide within 18 days, though final totals differ between trackers. Sacnilk listed its worldwide gross at Rs 428 crore. Whatever number one prefers, ‘Devara’ showed why these combinations remain commercially tempting: Jr NTR supplied the home-market thunder, while Janhvi and Saif widened the Hindi-market conversation.

3. Prabhas, Deepika Padukone And Amitabh Bachchan - Kalki 2898 AD

Released on June 27, 2024, Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ assembled Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan for a Telugu-led science-fiction epic that borrowed from the Mahabharata and then drove several thousand years into the future. Prabhas played Bhairava, Amitabh became the towering Ashwatthama, Deepika played the pregnant Sumathi and Kamal appeared as Supreme Yaskin.

The film’s approximately Rs 1100 crore worldwide haul made the casting more than a publicity exercise. Each star served a different part of the movie’s ambition: Prabhas brought pan-India scale, Amitabh supplied mythic gravitas, Deepika carried much of the emotional jeopardy and Kamal made a relatively brief appearance feel like a warning for the sequel. It was less a meeting of industries than the Avengers-style assembly Indian cinema had been promising for years.

4. Ranbir Kapoor And Rashmika Mandanna - Animal

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ released on December 1, 2023, with Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna leading a cast that included Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri. Ranbir played the violently devoted Ranvijay, while Rashmika’s Geetanjali became the person required to live with the emotional blast radius. The movie sparked arguments about misogyny and violence, but indifference was never among the reactions.

Its box office was just as loud: approximately Rs 917.82 crore worldwide. Rashmika was already a national name after ‘Pushpa’, yet ‘Animal’ embedded her even more firmly in mainstream Hindi cinema.

5. Shah Rukh Khan And Nayanthara - Jawan

Atlee’s ‘Jawan’, released on September 7, 2023, brought Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara together, cast Vijay Sethupathi as the villain and gave Deepika Padukone a pivotal special appearance. Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and an ensemble of women formed the team around SRK’s Vikram Rathore and Azad. It was a Hindi film powered unapologetically by Tamil mass-cinema rhythm – complete with emotional flashbacks, social anger, double roles and entrances engineered for flying popcorn.

The experiment did not merely work; it detonated. ‘Jawan’ grossed approximately Rs 1148.32 crore worldwide. Nayanthara’s Hindi film debut gave the movie a genuine co-star rather than a token crossover face, Vijay Sethupathi supplied a villain audiences already knew across languages, and Atlee translated his commercial instincts without sanding away their southern flavour.

6. Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt And Ajay Devgn - RRR

SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ arrived on March 25, 2022, with Jr NTR and Ram Charan as its leads. Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn appeared in important supporting roles, alongside Shriya Saran and Olivia Morris. The Hindi stars strengthened the ensemble and the film’s national visibility, but the emotional engine remained the spectacular bromance between Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju. The film went on to earn roughly Rs 1300 crore worldwide, while ‘Naatu Naatu’ won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

7. Yash, Sanjay Dutt And Raveena Tandon - KGF: Chapter 2

Before Yash shared ‘Toxic’ with Kiara Advani, he welcomed two major Hindi film stars into Rocky Bhai’s universe. Prashanth Neel’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, released on April 14, 2022, cast Sanjay Dutt as the brutal Adheera and Raveena Tandon as Prime Minister Ramika Sen. Srinidhi Shetty and Prakash Raj were also among the principal actors.

The film crossed Rs 1200 crore worldwide, turning its Kannada origins into a point of pride rather than a limitation. Sanjay Dutt did not arrive for a ceremonial cameo; Adheera was built as a physical threat worthy of Rocky. Raveena, meanwhile, gave the political side of the story imperious authority. The casting helped ‘KGF 2’ feel bigger, but Yash remained unmistakably at the centre – an important lesson in how to expand a franchise without diluting the hero audiences came to see.

8. Prabhas And Shraddha Kapoor - Saaho

Following the ‘Baahubali’ phenomenon, Prabhas chose a bilingual action spectacle for his next move. Sujeeth’s ‘Saaho’, released on August 30, 2019, was filmed in Telugu and Hindi and paired him with Shraddha Kapoor. Jackie Shroff, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Chunky Panday, Arun Vijay and Mandira Bedi filled out a cast that seemed to have been assembled by spinning a wheel labelled “every industry”.

The film drew poor reviews but grossed approximately Rs 439 crore worldwide. Shraddha’s police officer was more involved in the action than the standard glamorous co-star, while Prabhas’s post-Baahubali reach gave the film a huge opening across markets.

9. Rajinikanth And Akshay Kumar - 2.0

S Shankar’s ‘2.0’ released on November 29, 2018, and pitted Rajinikanth’s Vaseegaran and Chitti against Akshay Kumar’s winged antagonist Pakshi Rajan. Amy Jackson completed the central trio. This was no polite guest appearance: Akshay was buried under prosthetics, given the film’s environmental grievance and asked to go supervillain-big opposite the one actor for whom “larger than life” is merely a starting instruction.

The science-fiction sequel collected Rs 691 crore worldwide. Its VFX and gigantic budget dominated the conversation, but the Rajinikanth–Akshay face-off was the marketing masterstroke. Years before “pan-India” became an everyday trade term, ‘2.0’ understood the value of giving two enormous regional fan bases a reason to book the same show.

10. Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor - Raanjhanaa

Not every cross-industry collaboration needs collapsing buildings and a Rs 500-crore effects bill. Aanand L Rai’s ‘Raanjhanaa’, released on June 21, 2013, introduced Tamil star Dhanush as a Hindi-film leading man opposite Sonam Kapoor. Abhay Deol and Swara Bhasker were central to the ensemble. Dhanush’s Kundan was charming, reckless, funny and increasingly troubling – a performance that refused to become tidier simply because the actor was entering a new market.

The film grossed approximately Rs 93 crore worldwide and became a hit. Dhanush’s command of the character cut through any anxiety about accent or language, while AR Rahman’s music helped the film travel far beyond its initial release.

As Yash and Kiara step into Geetu Mohandas’s dangerous world in ‘Toxic’, the old Bollywood-versus-South framing feels increasingly outdated. The more exciting contest is now happening inside each movie: can its story match the size of the names on the poster? When the answer is yes, language stops being a barrier – and becomes one more market cheering at the same scene.
