‘Thamma’ Crosses Rs 55 Cr, ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ Holds Steady
Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s ‘Thamma’ continues its strong box-office run as it crosses Rs 50 crore mark.
After delivering the blockbuster ‘Stree 2’, Maddock Films has struck again with another spine-tingling entertainer. Their latest vampire horror-comedy ‘Thamma’, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, hit theatres on Diwali and has quickly turned into a box-office winner. The film has raked in over Rs 50 crore in just three days. According to box office tracking portal Sacnilk, ‘Thamma’ opened to an impressive Rs 24 crore on its first day and maintained strong momentum on day two with Rs 18.6 crore.
On its third day, the film saw a slight dip, collecting Rs 13 crore, bringing its total to Rs 55.6 crore. With this, ‘Thamma’ has comfortably surpassed the lifetime domestic collection of Kajol’s horror drama ‘Maa’, which grossed Rs 36.08 crore in India and Rs 49.75 crore worldwide.
Interestingly, ‘Thamma’ also released alongside Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa’s romantic thriller ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’, yet Ayushmann’s film is currently leading the competition by a wide margin.
The Aditya Sarpotdar directorial is also inching closer to overtaking the lifetime total of ‘Bhediya’ (Rs 68.99 crore), the Varun Dhawan-led horror comedy that was part of the same horror-comedy universe.
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and written by Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew, and Arun Falara, ‘Thamma’ serves as the fifth instalment in Maddock’s horror-comedy franchise. The film follows a journalist, played by Ayushmann, who after a mysterious encounter with Rashmika Mandanna’s character, transforms into a vampiric creature called Betal. As he struggles with his newfound identity, he must protect humanity from an ancient evil, portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Meanwhile, ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’, directed by Milap Zaveri, continues to perform steadily despite competition. The romantic action-drama opened to a healthy Rs 9 crore on October 21. It saw only a 14 per cent dip on its second day, earning Rs 7.75 crore, and added another Rs 6 crore on day three, taking its total domestic collection to Rs 22.75 crore. The Thursday drop stood at over 22 percent.
When compared, ‘Thamma’ saw a sharper decline of around 33 per cent on the same day, despite its wider release. While Maddock’s film leads in numbers, ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ has shown stronger weekday retention, with only a 33 per cent total dip since Tuesday, compared to nearly 50 per cent for ‘Thamma’.
With the weekend ahead, Milap Zaveri’s film, starring Harshvardhan Rane, Sonam Bajwa, Shaad Randhawa, Sachin Khedekar, and Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, is expected to pick up pace. Made on a modest Rs 25 crore budget, the film’s team is hopeful it can cross Rs 50 crore net by Sunday.
