It is a moment of immense pride and nostalgia for Indian cinema lovers worldwide. ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ), the film that redefined romance for a generation, has clocked 30 years since its release. To celebrate this colossal milestone, the film’s iconic lead pair, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, flew to London for a historic event that has sent fans into a frenzy. In a first for an Indian movie, a bronze statue depicting the legendary characters Raj and Simran was unveiled at Leicester Square in London as part of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail.

Shah Rukh Khan took to Instagram to share a glimpse of the special ceremony, posting a heartwarming video and photos that perfectly captured the magic of the pair.

Sharing the moments on social media, King Khan used the film’s most famous dialogue. He captioned the post, “Bade Bade Deshon Mein, Aisi Chhoti Chhoti Baatein Hoti Rehti Hain, Senorita.”

He expressed his excitement, writing, “Thrilled to unveil the bronze statue of Raj & Simran at London’s Leicester Square today, celebrating 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)! Incredibly delighted that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be honoured with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail.”

The video showed the duo standing under umbrellas, braving the London drizzle – a fitting atmosphere for a romantic film. In the clip, the excitement was palpable as Shah Rukh and Kajol count down “4, 3, 2, 1” before the blue velvet cloth was pulled away to reveal the magnificent bronze structure.

The statue captured the actors in a signature dance pose from the film, immortalizing their on-screen romance in the heart of the UK. As the statue was revealed, the crowd erupted in cheers, and the actors were seen laughing and admiring their bronze counterparts.

Shah Rukh Khan looked dapper as ever in a sharp black monochrome suit and sunglasses, shielding Kajol from the rain with an umbrella. Kajol radiated elegance, opting for a stunning mint green saree paired with a matching long-sleeved blouse, completing her look with minimal jewellery and loose curls.

Directed by Aditya Chopra, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is widely regarded as one of the most beloved films in Indian history. It holds the record for being the longest-running movie in Indian cinema, with the film still playing to audiences at Mumbai’s famed Maratha Mandir theatre.

Reflecting on the 30-year journey, Shah Rukh admitted in a statement that it feels like the movie was released just yesterday.

“It doesn’t feel like it’s been 30 years since 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' released. It feels like it happened yesterday because ‘bade bade deshon mein aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain….’ but it still feels unbelievable. I’m truly grateful for all the love that I have received from people from across the world for playing Raj - nobody could have foreseen the kind of place the film made in the hearts of people around the world and I will never forget the moment when everyone started to come...see the film and fall in love,” Shah Rukh had said in a statement.

Kajol also shared her thoughts on why the character of Simran remains relevant three decades later.

“There’s a piece of DDLJ in almost every romantic film that came after it, because somewhere, history was made and it never quite left us. For me, Simran is a chapter that refuses to end. She represents millions of girls across this country - girls who want to do what their parents say, who carry tradition in one hand but still reach out for freedom with the other. That’s why she still resonates. Every time someone says, ‘Ja Simran, ja', it signifies the belief that courage and love can coexist,” Kajol had shared in the statement.

With this statue, Raj and Simran have now permanently stamped their presence on the streets of London, where their love story first began.
