Ranveer Singh Apologises For "Hurting Sentiments" Following 'Kantara' Mimicry Row
Ranveer Singh offered an apology on Tuesday after facing criticism for his mimicry of actor Rishab Shetty from 'Kantara: Chapter 1'.
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming actioner 'Dhurandhar', offered an apology on Tuesday after facing massive criticism for his mimicry of actor Rishab Shetty from 'Kantara: Chapter 1'. Last week, the 'Gully Boy' actor made an appearance during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025. And it was then that Ranveer took to the stage and praised Rishab Shetty’s performance in ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. While praising the actor, Ranveer referred to Chamundi daiva as a “female ghost,” and then went on to imitate the character on stage.
The video went viral in no time, and the Bollywood actor was lambasted left, right and centre on social media. Taking note of the situation, Ranveer posted a lengthy statement on Instagram Stories, apologising for hurting the sentiments of people.
“My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration,” Ranveer wrote.
“I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise,” he added.

For the unversed, the incident took place on November 28. After taking the stage, Ranveer broke into appreciation of Rishab. "I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body — that shot was amazing," said Ranveer.
The actor then imitated the scene, leaving the ‘Kantara’ actor in splits. However, his remarks and behaviour did not please many on the internet as users labelled them insensitive and disrespectful.

Another clip showcased Rishab warning Ranveer not to mimic him earlier in the show. A Hindu group has already submitted a complaint with the police against Ranveer, alleging that he hurt their religious sentiments.
Speaking of Ranveer's 'Dhurandhar', the film is set to release in the theatres on December 5. Directed by Aditya Dhar, ‘Dhurandhar’ also stars Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, and Sara Arjun.
