Filmmakers are now resurrecting cult favourites, revisiting beloved characters after decades and building cinematic universes capable of sustaining several interconnected stories. While some forthcoming installments have secured theatrical dates, others are navigating casting changes, production delays and even legal disputes. Yet, none of that has weakened audience interest.

From Emraan Hashmi’s emotionally scarred Shivam Pandit and Ajay Devgn’s calculating Vijay Salgaonkar to Rani Mehra, Rancho and Bollywood’s favourite comedy trios, here are the upcoming sequels and franchise films keeping fans on their toes.
1. Awarapan 2
Nearly two decades after ‘Awarapan’ became a cult favourite, Emraan Hashmi is returning as Shivam Pandit in ‘Awarapan 2’. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, written by Bilal Siddiqui and produced by Vishesh Bhatt, the sequel is scheduled to release worldwide on August 14, 2026. Disha Patani plays Zara, while Shabana Azmi appears as Nafisa. Puran Gabbi, Anirudh Rawal, Surendar Vicky, Vijayant Kohli and Atul Kumar complete the supporting cast.
Unveiled on August 6, the trailer presents Shivam as an older, scarred man still haunted by grief and his unfinished past. Revenge and redemption propel him into another brutal conflict, while the action-heavy treatment retains the music, anguish and emotional intensity associated with the 2007 original. Rather than surviving entirely on nostalgia, the sequel appears ready to take Shivam into an even darker chapter.

2. Khosla Ka Ghosla 2
20 years after ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ captured the frustrations and aspirations of Delhi’s middle class, the Khoslas are returning. Prashant Bhagia has directed the sequel, with Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Savita Raj Hiremath and Raj Hiremath serving as producers.
Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shorey, Parvinn Dabass, Tara Sharma and Kiran Juneja are reprising their roles, while Ravi Kishan is among the prominent new additions. Boman Irani recently completed his portion of the shoot, and the film remains scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 28, 2026. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the reunion promises another sharply observed story built around family dynamics, property disputes and middle-class survival.

3. Drishyam 3
Ajay Devgn returns as Vijay Salgaonkar in ‘Drishyam 3’, the concluding chapter of the popular Hindi thriller series. Directed by Abhishek Pathak, the film has completed shooting and will release theatrically on October 2, 2026. Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav reprise their roles, while Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj join the franchise.
Akshaye Khanna, who appeared as IG Tarun Ahlawat in ‘Drishyam 2’, is not part of the new film. Abhishek Pathak has clarified that Jaideep is playing a newly written character rather than directly replacing Akshaye Khanna. The plot remains confidential, although the promotional line “Aakhri hissa baaki hai” indicates that Vijay’s long battle to protect his family is approaching its final and possibly most dangerous stage.

4. Golmaal 5
The ‘Golmaal’ gang is returning, and this time, it is larger than ever. Rohit Shetty’s fifth installment reunites Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Kemmu. Sharman Joshi officially returns to the series after playing Laxman in 2006’s ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’, while Akshay Kumar makes his franchise debut.
Production commenced in March 2026, and the ensemble has already completed a major schedule in Ooty. The storyline is under wraps, although reports suggest that the film will introduce fantasy elements and feature a comically adversarial equation between Ajay and Akshay. A December 2026 release is reportedly being considered, but the makers have yet to announce a final theatrical date.

5. Hera Pheri 3
Few Bollywood sequels have endured a journey as turbulent as ‘Hera Pheri 3’. Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal have been associated with the film as Raju, Shyam and Baburao, but the project is not currently in production. It remains stalled by disputes over franchise rights, production complications and major changes behind the camera.
Priyadarshan has officially walked away from the film and expressed doubts about whether it will ever reach cinemas. Akshay has also acknowledged that it is not being made at present, although he remains hopeful about reuniting with the original trio eventually. Ahmed Khan recently addressed speculation about taking over the project but did not confirm himself as its director. The story is expected to continue Bhaskar’s journey after he accepts his werewolf identity and supernatural powers. Ranbir Kapoor is expected to portray both characters, setting up a brutal confrontation between the two men.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga has confirmed that production is scheduled to begin around mid-2027 after he completes his other commitments. Sohum will reprise his role, while Alia Bhatt has officially joined him in a pivotal part.
The film is scheduled to release theatrically on December 3, 2027. Its story remains closely guarded, but the announcement line – “A sinful past, an ominous future. 9. 3 Idiots Sequel
A sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ is officially being developed, although ‘3 Idiots 2’ is not yet its confirmed title. Rajkumar Hirani has also dismissed reports that it will be called ‘4 Idiots’ or introduce a fourth member to the central gang.
Instead of returning to college, the story will meet Rancho, Farhan and Raju roughly 15 to 20 years later. Rajkumar Hirani has revealed that the friends are now married, have children and are confronting midlife crises. Aamir has read an early draft, but substantial writing work remains. R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are expected to reunite with him, although the final cast and production timeline have not been formally announced.

10. Shaitaan 2
After ‘Shaitaan’ emerged as a major commercial success in 2024, its sequel entered development. Vikas Bahl is expected to return as director, with Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan, Jyotika and Janki Bodiwala reportedly set to reprise their roles.
The first film, a Hindi adaptation of the Gujarati thriller ‘Vash’, followed a family terrorised by a stranger capable of controlling their daughter through black magic. Its final moments left enough room for Vanraj’s dark influence to return. Despite reports about the original team reuniting, the makers have not announced a filming schedule, complete cast, plot or theatrical date for ‘Shaitaan 2’. The project, therefore, remains at the development stage.

11. Queen 2
‘Queen 2’ is no longer merely a possibility. Kangana Ranaut has completed shooting for the sequel, which reunites her with director Vikas Bahl. She returns as Rani Mehra, whose solo honeymoon and journey towards independence made the 2014 original a modern classic. Marathi actor Subodh Bhave is reportedly playing Rani’s husband in the new film.
The sequel has, however, encountered a significant legal hurdle. Phantom Studios, which co-produced the original, has filed a Rs 250-crore lawsuit against JioStar, alleging that ‘Queen 2’ was made without its consent. The company claims it possesses 50 per cent of the rights to any sequel, prequel or derivative project based on ‘Queen’. The matter is before the court, while the completed film has entered post-production without an announced release date.

12. Stree 3
Following the phenomenal success of ‘Stree 2’, Maddock Films has officially scheduled ‘Stree 3’ for August 13, 2027. Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor are expected to return alongside the familiar ensemble, while Akshay Kumar’s post-credits appearance in ‘Stree 2’ has positioned his character as a powerful future antagonist.
Before the third installment arrives, the animated feature ‘Chhoti Stree’ is expected to explore the mysterious woman’s backstory and establish events leading into ‘Stree 3’. The film is also likely to strengthen the links between the ‘Stree’, ‘Bhediya’, ‘Munjya’ and ‘Thama’ storylines. 13. Krrish 4
Hrithik Roshan will return as India’s home-grown superhero in ‘Krrish 4’ while also making his directorial debut with the ambitious project. Rakesh Roshan and Aditya Chopra are backing the film, marking a major creative transition for a franchise previously directed by Rakesh Roshan.
Although filming was initially expected to begin in 2026 for a possible 2027 release, the production has been pushed because of budget and scheduling considerations. Rakesh has denied reports of a serious fallout with Aditya, but revised filming dates have not been announced. Apart from Hrithik’s return, the cast also remains unconfirmed. Producer Namit Malhotra confirmed in April 2026 that the sequel remains on track and will move forward after his work on ‘Ramayana’. Ranbir Kapoor is set to return as Shiva, but the actor playing Dev has not been announced despite years of speculation. The story is expected to explore Dev and Amrita’s history, along with the looming conflict between Dev and Shiva. Even before ‘Ramayana: Part One’ arrives in theatres on November 6, 2026, work is well underway on its sequel. Ranbir Kapoor recently revealed that around half of ‘Ramayana: Part Two’ has already been filmed. Nitesh Tiwari directs the two-part epic, starring Ranbir as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.
The first film will conclude on a cliffhanger, while the sequel is expected to focus more heavily on the conflict with Ravana and the climactic war. ‘Ramayana: Part Two’ is scheduled for Diwali 2027, although its exact release date has not been announced.

More than two decades after ‘No Entry’ became a comedy blockbuster, Anees Bazmee has confirmed that its sequel remains alive despite repeated delays and casting upheavals. Boney Kapoor is producing the film, while Anees Bazmee has described its screenplay as one of the strongest he has written.
The sequel was initially announced with Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Diljit Dosanjh replacing Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. Diljit subsequently left because of scheduling issues, while Varun has also reportedly stepped away. Arjun remains associated with the project, but a revised ensemble has not been officially unveiled. Consequently, ‘No Entry 2’ does not currently have a confirmed filming schedule or theatrical release date.
