Alia Bhatt’s Relationship Timeline:

2008-2012: Ali Dadarkar

How They Met

Ali Dadarkar was Alia Bhatt's high-school sweetheart, and the two dated before she made her debut in Bollywood. In a 2013 interview, Alia said she had had “two boyfriends in school”. During a later ‘Koffee With Karan’ appearance, she distinguished a childlike Class 6 “relationship” – which she described as little more than smiling at someone across the classroom – from her first serious boyfriend in Class 10.

Public Appearances

As this was before her stardom, their appearances were largely private, consisting of dinner dates and hanging out with common friends.

Films/Projects: None (Pre-debut)

The Breakup

The couple reportedly broke up around the time Alia made her debut in ‘Student of the Year’ (2012). The transition into the film industry, sudden fame, and her changing priorities were cited as the primary reasons for the split.

Where They Stand Now

They remain on good terms. In 2018, Alia was spotted hanging out with Ali Dadarkar at a mutual friend's wedding, proving that they continue to share an amicable bond.

2015-2017: Sidharth Malhotra

How They Met

Alia and Sidharth entered Hindi cinema together in Karan Johar’s ‘Student of the Year’ (2012), alongside Varun Dhawan. Sidharth later recalled that his first shot was with Alia during the ‘Radha’ song and said the shared beginning gave them considerable personal and professional history. Their exact dating start has never been established by either actor. Reports linked them from late 2014 onward, while other reports commonly placed the relationship in 2015.

Public Appearances

They were a favourite among the paparazzi and were frequently spotted together at industry parties, awards nights, and casual dinner dates. In December 214, they reportedly arrived separately but left the sangeet of designer Manish Malhotra’s niece together, helping to intensify dating speculation.

In December 2016, the duo arrived at Mumbai airport in the same car amid speculation that they were travelling together. They also famously appeared together for a Vogue magazine cover shoot in 2016.

Films

‘Student of the Year’ (2012) was their first film and shared debut. At this stage, there was no verified evidence that they were a couple. In 2016, their second film ‘Kapoor & Sons’ released. During promotions, Sidharth publicly called Alia a close friend and colleague, reflecting how guarded they remained while the relationship was ongoing.

The Breakup

Their relationship reportedly ended in 2017. While the exact reason was never officially stated by either star, widespread reports suggested they simply grew apart as their careers pulled them in different directions. On ‘Koffee With Karan’ in 2019, Sidharth said there was a reason two people decide not to stay together and referred broadly to “lots of ups and downs”. He did not blame Alia, a co-star or a single incident. He also described the breakup as non-bitter and their equation as civil.

Reports at the time attempted to connect the breakup to Sidharth’s friendship with Jacqueline Fernandez. That explanation remains speculation, and Sidharth said that he and Jacqueline “were never dating”.

Where They Stand Now

Alia Bhatt told DNA in 2019 that she retained “a lot of love and respect” for Sidharth, that the two had met after the breakup and that there were “no bad vibes”. She said their long-shared history included major life milestones and expressed openness to being friends with an ex. Sidharth Malhotra is now happily married to Kiara Advani.

2018-Present: Ranbir Kapoor

How They Met

Alia Bhatt famously had a major crush on Ranbir Kapoor since she was 9 years old when she first met him on the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Black’ (2005). Reportedly, Alia auditioned to play a young Rani Mukerji and Ranbir worked as an assistant director on the project. However, their real-life romance began much later in 2017 when they were cast together for the first time in Ayan Mukerji's fantasy epic, ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’.

Ranbir later placed the start in 2018 and said they connected on a flight to Tel Aviv to work with a movement coach. Alia has similarly recalled that they sat together, began talking and felt the “vibe” during that flight.

Public Appearances

They made their high-profile debut as a couple at Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s wedding reception in May 2018. Following this, he was asked directly by GQ India whether he was dating Alia. Ranbir had said that the relationship was “really new,” needed space and should be allowed to develop.

As the relationship became less guarded, Alia and Ranbir appeared together at awards ceremonies, holidays and family gatherings. At the Filmfare Awards in March 2019, both won leading acting honours – Alia for ‘Raazi’ and Ranbir for ‘Sanju’. In her acceptance speech, Alia called Ranbir her “special one” and said “I love you” while pointing towards him.

Alia also became visibly close to the Kapoor family. During a December 2020 interview with Rajeev Masand, Ranbir called Alia his girlfriend and said their wedding “would’ve been sealed” had the pandemic not disrupted their lives. He added that he hoped to complete that goal soon. Alia later confirmed that they moved in together after their original wedding plan was delayed. She described living together as a period in which they became comfortable and built memories without the immediate pressure of a ceremony.

In February 2022, shortly before the wedding, Alia told NDTV that she had been “married to Ranbir” in her head for years and believed the formal marriage would happen at the right time.

The Proposal And Marriage

Ranbir popped the question to Alia during a trip to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Alia later revealed that he had carried the ring without telling anyone and had quietly arranged for their guide to photograph the special moment.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt finally tied the knot on April 14, 2022, in an intimate ceremony at Vastu, their Mumbai residential building. The guest list included Neetu Kapoor, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt, Soni Razdan, Pooja Bhatt, Shaheen Bhatt, Karan Johar and Ayan Mukerji, among others.

Alia officially announced the wedding by sharing photographs from the ceremony and explaining that they had exchanged vows on the balcony where they had spent much of their relationship. Both Ranbir and Alia wore ivory Sabyasachi ensembles. Alia looked stunning an ivory hand-dyed organza saree with a handwoven tissue veil. Ranbir sported a coordinating ivory silk sherwani.

Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt Welcome Raha

On June 27, 2022, Alia announced that she and Ranbir were expecting their first child. Their daughter was born at Mumbai’s HN Reliance Hospital on November 6, 2022. The couple announced her arrival through Alia’s Instagram account. On November 24, Alia revealed that their daughter had been named Raha. Ranbir and Alia initially kept Raha’s face away from public view. On December 25, 2023, they posed with their then 13-month-old daughter while arriving for the Kapoor family’s annual Christmas lunch.

In 2025, Alia said parenthood had changed their bond and made them more of a “unit”. She described Ranbir as her friend, the person she most enjoyed teasing and, above all, someone who was wonderful to her as a human being. In an Esquire India interview in early 2026, Alia directly addressed online theories about discord in the marriage. She said short clips did not represent the reality of a seven-year relationship and that the “noise” did not alter her family dynamic.

Films

They have so far only starred in one movie together ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’ (2022). They will reunite for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Love And War’ (2027). The upcoming movie also stars Vicky Kaushal.

Alia Bhatt’s Rumoured Relationships And Unverified Link-Ups

Varun Dhawan

Alia and Varun debuted together in ‘Student of the Year’ and became a popular screen pair through ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ and ‘Kalank’. Their chemistry, promotional banter and close friendship repeatedly generated dating stories. Alia said in 2013 that reports had linked her to Varun even when she barely knew him and that the stories were “untrue”. Varun later described their bond as friendship and said there was “nothing like that” romantically.

Arjun Kapoor

Dating speculation began after Alia and Arjun were seen at a cinema and she attended his birthday gathering. Their romantic pairing in ‘2 States’ (2014), along with the film’s promotional appearances, kept the story in circulation. Later, Alia directly said, “I am not dating Arjun,” explaining that they got along well and she would not cut off friends to prevent rumours. In 2014, while promoting ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, she again called her co-star link-ups baseless and said she had been single for two years.

Kavin Mittal

In February 2018, reports claimed that Alia had grown close to entrepreneur Kavin Mittal, founder of Hike and son of Bharti Enterprises founder Sunil Bharti Mittal. Reports suggested that they met at an economic event in 2017 and cited an unnamed source who characterised the connection as a friendship that might develop. Neither Alia nor Kavin publicly confirmed a romance.

While the rumour mills continuously linked Alia with several of her leading men, she often chose to let her work speak louder than the speculation. Ultimately, her story found its fairy-tale ending with Ranbir Kapoor – a man she had a crush on. Today, as one of Bollywood’s most powerful and celebrated couples, Alia and Ranbir have successfully blended their massive superstardom with a grounded, private family life. As they continue to dominate the box office with major upcoming releases in 2026 and beyond, their off-screen dynamic as devoted partners and parents to their daughter Raha remains the most endearing chapter of Alia’s personal life.
