American singer-songwriter Post Malone turned Monday night into a historic memory for Guwahati, Assam. Performing in the city for the first time, the Grammy-nominated artist not only delivered his chart-topping hits but also touched the hearts of thousands with a poignant tribute to the late Assamese icon, Zubeen Garg. In a moment that has since gone viral on social media, Post Malone paused to address the crowd, acknowledging the massive loss the region suffered earlier this year.

“To be in the home of the great legendary Zubeen tonight, ladies and gentlemen. I just hope everyone’s having an amazing day and an amazing night. My name is Austin Richard Post, and I’ve come to play some street songs,” Post Malone said while interacting with the audience.

The shout-out instantly electrified the stadium. Fans were left deeply moved, with many taking to social media to express their gratitude that an international star of his stature honoured Zubeen Garg on such a grand stage in his home state.

Ahead of the concert, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had welcomed the rapper to the city, marking it as a significant moment for the region. “For the first time ever, global music icon and Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone will be performing in Guwahati, a historic occasion which places our city firmly on the world entertainment map. My best wishes on this occasion and I hope everyone loves Assam’s hospitality,” the CM wrote.

While the concert was a celebration of music, the shadow of Zubeen Garg’s tragic death still looms large. The beloved singer passed away on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea off Singapore during a trip for the North East India Festival.

While the Singapore Police Force initially cited “drowning” as the cause of death and stated they did not suspect foul play, the investigation back home in Assam has taken a darker turn.

A second post-mortem conducted in Delhi confirmed “drowning” and found no traces of poison, undermining earlier theories of poisoning. However, the Assam government maintains a different stance.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has publicly stated in the Assam Assembly that the death was not an accident but “plain and simple murder”.

The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has launched a massive probe, filing over 60 FIRs and conducting multiple raids.

Several key figures have been arrested, including the festival organizer, Zubeen’s manager, band members, two Personal Security Officers (PSOs), and even a close relative who is a police officer. The SIT is also scrutinizing suspicious financial transactions worth over Rs 1.1 crore involving the PSOs.

The investigation is now nearing its conclusion. Reports suggest the SIT has wrapped up most of its inquiries, and a chargesheet is expected to be filed by December 12, 2025.
