The clip, now widely shared on social media, shows the singer visibly exhausted as he struggles to swim without a life jacket. The exact timeline of the newly surfaced video remains unclear, and B4U couldn’t verify the authenticity of the video. However, the video is going viral on social media, with fans across Assam and beyond expressing shock and heartbreak over his demise.
In the distressing footage, Zubeen appears short of breath and fatigued, struggling to reach a raft. At one point, he seems unable to stay afloat, forcing his companions to rush in and support him.
Reports suggest that Zubeen initially wore a life jacket but removed it shortly after, claiming it was uncomfortable for swimming. He then re-entered the water without the safety gear, which is when he reportedly experienced a fatal medical emergency.
Zubeen Garg passed away while swimming with friends and associates in Singapore on September 19. He was in the country to attend the North East Festival, a cultural showcase organised by the Indian High Commission. Authorities in Singapore issued a death certificate listing “drowning” as the cause of death, though speculation continues in Assam about possible negligence or foul play.
Some reports have also indicated he may have suffered an epileptic seizure while in the water. The full post-mortem report is still awaited.
The 52-year-old singer’s mortal remains were brought back to Guwahati on Sunday, where lakhs gathered to pay their respects. On September 23, his last rites were performed with full state honours at Kamarkuchi in Sonapur, about 25 km from Guwahati.
The Assam government has announced that the cremation site will be converted into a memorial. Another memorial dedicated to Zubeen Garg will also be built in Jorhat, his hometown located nearly 300 km east of Guwahati.
The videos and tributes that continue to emerge only highlight the enormous void left behind by Zubeen Garg – a voice that defined generations and carried Assam’s cultural pride to the world.
