Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited acting swansong, 'Jana Nayagan', finally arrived in cinemas on Thursday after a seven-month postponement. Marketed as the superstar’s final outing before dedicating himself to politics, the film generated enormous anticipation ahead of its release. However, while it registered a solid opening at the global box office, it could not live up to the lofty expectations of a Rs 100 crore first day. The H Vinoth directorial enjoyed packed theatres across Tamil Nadu, where Vijay continues to command an unmatched fan following.

Outside his home state, though, the response was comparatively muted, limiting the film’s overall domestic performance. According to estimates shared by industry tracker Sacnilk, 'Jana Nayagan' collected around Rs 41 crore net in India on its opening day, translating to approximately Rs 48 crore gross.

The film’s performance in the dubbed markets proved to be a weak link. The Hindi and Telugu versions together contributed only a little over Rs 3 crore net. The underwhelming response beyond Tamil Nadu ultimately prevented the film from delivering the blockbuster start many trade analysts had predicted.

Internationally, 'Jana Nayagan' fared better, led by an impressive showing in North America. The film crossed the USD 2 million mark in the region on its opening day, while the rest of the overseas territories collectively added more than USD 1 million. With an overseas gross of roughly USD 3.2 million, the film’s worldwide day-one collection climbed to around Rs 78 crore, as reported by Sacnilk.

Despite the respectable numbers, the opening fell well below pre-release projections. 'Jana Nayagan' also trails several recent Tamil releases, including multiple Vijay starrers. Compared to the actor’s previous blockbusters, 'Jana Nayagan' had a relatively subdued start. Its worldwide opening is significantly behind 'Leo', which had launched with nearly Rs 150 crore globally.

'Jana Nayagan' also falls short of Vijay’s 'GOAT' and 'Beast', while trailing Rajinikanth’s 'Coolie'. The opening-day figure is additionally lower than the worldwide debuts of films such as 'Peddi' and 'War 2'.

Directed by H Vinoth, 'Jana Nayagan' marks the end of Vijay’s three-decade-long acting career before he shifts his complete focus to public life. Originally scheduled to release in January 2026, the film was delayed after certification issues postponed its theatrical debut. During the intervening months, Vijay’s political party, TVK, emerged victorious in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with the actor taking oath as the state’s Chief Minister.

The film boasts a star-studded ensemble featuring Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain in key roles. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the soundtrack, while Sathyan Sooryan handled cinematography and Pradeep E Ragav took charge of editing.
