Few films in recent Tamil cinema arrived carrying the emotional and commercial weight of ‘Jana Nayagan’. Touted as Vijay’s farewell to acting following his full-fledged entry into politics, the political action drama was expected to challenge – and possibly demolish – the superstar’s existing box-office records. Instead, after completing its first seven days in theatres, the film finds itself trailing ‘The Greatest of All Time’ (GOAT). ‘Jana Nayagan’ is certainly not a box-office failure. It has crossed Rs 250 crore worldwide despite enduring a prolonged certification battle, multiple postponements, a damaging pre-release leak and restrictions created by its A certificate.

However, when its numbers are placed alongside Vijay’s previous release at the same stage, ‘GOAT’ remains comfortably ahead.
Jana Nayagan: Vijay’s Eventful Farewell Film
Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, ‘Jana Nayagan’ finally released on July 23, 2026. The film stars Vijay in the lead alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Reba Monica John.
Vijay plays Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a prisoner who shares a close bond with an honest jailer, Srikanth, played by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Before his death, Srikanth entrusts his daughter Viji, played by Mamitha Baiju, to Vetri and asks him to help her become a strong, independent woman. Their personal journey eventually collides with a much larger threat involving a powerful corporate antagonist played by Bobby Deol. The story then expands into a political action thriller touching upon democracy and institutional corruption.

The Controversies That Almost Derailed ‘Jana Nayagan’
‘Jana Nayagan’ was initially slated to release on January 9, 2026. Its release was held up after a dispute over certification escalated into proceedings before the Madras High Court and subsequently reached the Supreme Court. The CBFC reportedly sought changes to political and religious references. It eventually received an A certificate – the first for a Vijay film – preventing viewers under 18 from watching it in theatres and limiting its appeal among Vijay’s traditionally strong family audience.
An even bigger setback arrived in April 2026, when the unreleased film was leaked online. During court proceedings, the prosecution reportedly claimed that the pirated version had been watched by around 1.2 crore people before access was blocked. It had circulated through messaging platforms, social-media sites and torrent portals.
The delayed July release also placed the film in a crowded international window, restricting the number of screens available in important overseas markets. Mixed reviews and criticism that the film resembled a TVK political manifesto further affected its momentum after the initial fan-driven rush.
How Much Has ‘Jana Nayagan’ Earned So Far?
According to Sacnilk, ‘Jana Nayagan’ earned Rs 6.10 crore net in India on its seventh day, taking its seven-day domestic total to Rs 149.50 crore net. Its India gross stands at approximately Rs 174.63 crore. The film has earned another Rs 81 crore gross from overseas territories, bringing its worldwide gross to approximately Rs 255.63 crore after seven days. The Tamil version has contributed Rs 127.75 crore net in India, while the Hindi and Telugu versions have collected Rs 13.15 crore and Rs 8.60 crore, respectively.
GOAT: Vijay’s Dual-Role Action Spectacle
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, ‘The Greatest of All Time’ was released worldwide on September 5, 2024. Vijay appeared in dual roles, leading an ensemble cast that included Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Jayaram, Ajmal Ameer, Sneha, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Laila, Vaibhav and Yogi Babu. ‘GOAT’ opened to mixed reviews, but its combination of Vijay’s dual performance, large-scale action, de-ageing technology and unrestricted access to his family audience helped it maintain stronger initial momentum.
‘Jana Nayagan’ Vs ‘GOAT’: Seven-Day Box-Office Comparison
India net collection: ‘Jana Nayagan’ earned approximately Rs 149.50 crore net in India during its first seven days. ‘GOAT’, meanwhile, collected Rs 171.25 crore net over the corresponding period, putting it ahead by Rs 21.75 crore.
India gross collection: Jana Nayagan’s seven-day India gross stands at Rs 174.63 crore, compared with Rs 199.17 crore earned by ‘GOAT.’
Overseas collection: The biggest difference between the films can be seen internationally. ‘Jana Nayagan’ has earned Rs 81 crore overseas, whereas ‘GOAT’ had collected Rs 130 crore within seven days.
Worldwide collection: After combining the domestic and overseas figures, Jana Nayagan’s worldwide gross stands at Rs 255.63 crore. ‘GOAT’ had reached Rs 329.17 crore by the same stage.
Opening-day performance: ‘Jana Nayagan’ began its theatrical journey with Rs 42.70 crore net in India. ‘GOAT’ had opened slightly higher at Rs 44 crore.
Seventh-day performance: The gap widened during the weekdays. While ‘Jana Nayagan’ collected Rs 6.10 crore net on its first Wednesday, ‘GOAT’ had earned Rs 8.50 crore on its seventh day.
Can Jana Nayagan Still Beat GOAT?
‘GOAT’ ended its theatrical run with approximately Rs 252.71 crore net in India, Rs 296.87 crore gross domestically and Rs 160.25 crore overseas. Its final worldwide collection stood at an estimated Rs 457.12 crore. For ‘Jana Nayagan’ to overtake it, the film must add another Rs 103.21 crore net in India and approximately Rs 201.49 crore worldwide.
That is a demanding target given its weekday decline, A-rated status, divided reception and reduced international footprint. The film still has Vijay’s farewell sentiment working in its favour, and its Rs 255-crore worldwide total is commendable considering the obstacles it faced. But at the end of the first seven days, the verdict is unambiguous: ‘GOAT’ has won the opening-week battle by a significant margin.
