John Abraham’s ‘The Diplomat’ Outperforms ‘Emergency’, Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’ Goes Past Rs 560 Cr

John Abraham’s ‘The Diplomat’, which released in theatres on Friday, March 14, is managing to find a respectable audience at the ticket counters. The new Hindi movie is being boasted by positive reviews. Based on the real life story of Indian diplomat JP Singh and how he saved Uzma Ahmed, ‘The Diplomat’ is winning a lot of praise for staying true to its source material and not overplaying the patriotism card. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, ‘The Diplomat’ earned Rs 4.65 crore on Sunday, the third day of its release.
The total nett domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 13.30 crore. ‘The Diplomat’ had opened to a collection of Rs 4 crore and it followed it up with an earning of Rs 4.65 crore on Saturday.
The film has now outperformed weekend collections of several Bollywood films, including ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ (Rs 1.82 crore), ‘Crazxy’ (Rs 3.75 crore), ‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’ (Rs 4.45 crore), ‘Badass Ravi Kumar’ (Rs 6.15 crore), ‘Loveyapa’ (Rs 4.55 crore), and ‘Emergency’ (Rs 10.35 crore).
Directed by Shivam Nair, ‘The Diplomat’ also stars Sadia Khateeb, Kumud Mishra, Sharib Hashmi, and Revathi in key roles.
However, the collections of ‘The Diplomat’ suffered a dent due to Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna-starrer ‘Chhaava’. The Laxman Utekar-directed historical biopic earned Rs 8 crore on Sunday, the 31st day of its release. Out of this Rs 8 crore, Rs 7.25 crore came through the Hindi version.
The total nett domestic collection of ‘Chhaava’ now stands at Rs 562.25 crore. The Hindi version's earnings stand at Rs 548.70 crore, while the Telugu version has contributed Rs 13.95 crore.
The historical epic has been produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films. ‘Chhaava’ is a period drama that brings to life the legendary story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal. The film portrays his courageous reign and starts with his coronation in 1681.
The film sees Rashmika Mandanna essaying the role of Maharani Yesubai. Akshaye Khanna features as Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Soyarabai.
‘Chhaava’ is an adaptation of the Marathi novel ‘Chhava’ by Shivaji Sawant. The film’s score and soundtrack album were composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.
