Nearly two decades after ‘Awarapan’ struggled to make an impact at the box office, its sequel has emerged as one of the biggest Hindi film success stories of the year. Riding on strong audience support and impressive ticket sales, ‘Awarapan 2’ has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide, giving leading man Emraan Hashmi a career milestone he says he will never forget. The actor recently shared an emotional message on social media, reflecting on the journey of the franchise and expressing gratitude for the overwhelming response to the sequel.

Posting a photograph with producer Vishesh Bhatt, Emraan Hashmi described the film as a project that holds a special place in his heart.

According to the actor, some films go beyond being just another assignment and become experiences that stay with an artist forever. He credited ‘Awarapan 2’ for achieving something few sequels manage, reviving a story whose original installment was appreciated by viewers only years after its theatrical run and transforming it into a major commercial success.

“There are films you work on, and then there are films you are genuinely proud to be a part of. Awarapan 2 belongs to the latter. It has become a rarest-of-rare phenomenon - an unprecedented feat. A film that didn't find its audience two decades ago returning with a sequel, determined to rewrite history at the box office. An emotionally charged action musical, mounted on a stunning visual scale and powered by incredibly diverse, timeless music, this is a film I truly believe is best experienced with an audience, in cinemas,” he wrote on Instagram.

Calling the project the best work of his career so far, Emraan Hashmi encouraged moviegoers to experience it on the big screen. He emphasised that the film’s emotional moments, action sequences and soundtrack are designed to be enjoyed in a theatrical setting alongside an audience.

“At the heart of it all is Vishesh, the creator of the world of Awarapan. His vision and unwavering conviction shaped everything and everyone. I'm so glad we took the leap together and made this journey. To be part of a film with such an incredible cast, musical genius, and creative brilliance has been super special. This is My Best Film Yet. So before it's too late, go experience Awarapan 2 in theatres now. Feel the emotional roller coaster. Let the music take over. And celebrate it the way it was meant to be celebrated, Big Screen, Big Sound Cinematic Experience,” he added.

The success of ‘Awarapan 2’ marks a remarkable turnaround for the franchise. Released in 2007, the original film failed to attract large crowds during its theatrical run and earned modest box-office returns. Over time, however, it developed a loyal fan following, with many viewers discovering and appreciating the film years after its release.

That delayed appreciation appears to have translated into strong support for the sequel. Since arriving in cinemas on August 14, 'Awarapan 2' generated impressive numbers both in India and overseas. Industry tracking data estimates that the film has earned Rs 148.40 crore nett domestically, while its worldwide gross has surpassed Rs 210 crore.

Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film also features Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi in key roles. Despite receiving a mixed critical response, the sequel has found significant traction with audiences and continues to perform strongly at the box office.

The story follows Shivam Pandit, reprised by Emraan Hashmi, as he becomes entangled in a dangerous mission involving a child trafficking network after a child connected to his past suddenly disappears. The emotional thriller has resonated with moviegoers, helping turn 'Awarapan 2' into one of the most talked-about Hindi releases of 2026.
