‘Jana Nayagan’ Day 4: Thalapathy Vijay’s Film Crosses 100 Cr India, Mints Over Rs 200 Cr Worldwide
Both ‘Jana Nayagan’ and ‘The Odyssey’ have crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India.
After witnessing a mixed start at the box office, Thalapathy Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' has bounced back with an encouraging weekend performance. The action drama registered a solid turnaround on Saturday and Sunday, helping it comfortably cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India within its extended opening weekend. The H Vinoth directorial opened to packed theatres across Tamil Nadu on Thursday, collecting Rs 42.70 crore net on its first day in India.
The collections dipped sharply to Rs 21.15 crore on Friday before staging a strong recovery over the weekend. Saturday contributed Rs 28.90 crore, while Sunday emerged as the biggest boost with an estimated Rs 32 crore net. The four-day domestic total now stands at an impressive Rs 124.75 crore.
Despite the healthy overall figures, ‘Jana Nayagan’ has relied heavily on its Tamil-language version for its success. The dubbed releases have delivered only modest returns so far. The Telugu version has collected less than Rs 7 crore during its first four days, while the Hindi release has managed a net total of around Rs 10 crore. The original Tamil version, meanwhile, has already crossed the Rs 100 crore mark on its own, underlining Vijay's massive fan following in his home state.
With Rs 124 crore net collected in India, ‘Jana Nayagan’ has become only the second Tamil film of 2026 to breach the milestone at the domestic box office. The year's highest-grossing Tamil release remains Suriya's 'Karuppu', which concluded its theatrical run with Rs 198 crore. If the current momentum continues, Vijay's latest could emerge as a serious contender to challenge that benchmark.
The film has already overtaken the lifetime domestic collections of several notable Tamil releases this year. It has also surpassed recent action entertainers such as ‘Dragon’ (Rs 102 crore) and ‘Sikandar’ (Rs 104 crore), further strengthening its position among the year's top performers.
Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ holds special significance as Vijay's final film before stepping away from cinema to focus entirely on his political career. Originally scheduled for a January release, the film was postponed after facing delays in obtaining CBFC certification.
During the delay, Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, following which the actor was sworn in as the state's Chief Minister. The film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, and Narain in key roles. The technical crew includes composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan, and editor Pradeep E Ragav.
Not just 'Jana Nayagan', Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' is also enjoying a massive run in India. On Sunday, the 10th day of its release, the Hollywood film earned Rs 11.75 crore, taking the total nett collections to Rs 119.65 crore.
However, both films are expected to receive a major dent in collections starting Thursday as Tom Holland's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' hits the theatres. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the Hollywood film is expected to collect Rs 50 to 60 crore on its opening day in India.
