Vijay Varma has taken a dig at FTII's former chairman, Gajendra Chauhan, for claiming that he is “proud” of Payal Kapadia.

Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' made India proud as the film managed to become the first Indian movie to win the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival. In the latest entertainment news, actor Vijay Varma, who is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), has taken a dig at the institution's former chairman, Gajendra Chauhan, for claiming that he was “proud” of Payal Kapadia.

For the unversed, back in 2015, Payal Kapadia was one of the protesting students who went on strike to oppose Chauhan's appointment as the chairperson of the Pune-based institution.

Speaking to PTI, Gajendra Chauhan said, "Congratulations to her and I feel proud that I was the chairman at the time when she was doing the course there."

Several users on the internet are now calling out the irony. Vijay Varma was also not able to hold himself back.

The 'Dahaad' actor posted Chauhan's statement with the popular meme "Karwali bezzati?". He also wrote, "Sir ye chup rehne ka time tha."

For the unversed, Payal Kapadia along with her batchmates, was part of the 139-day protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman.

As per Indian Express, the students boycotted classes and this resulted in a disciplinary action against them. She was one of 35 students whose name was registered in a complaint by the then-FTII director Prashant Pathrabe.

‘All We Imagine as Light’ stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon in the lead roles. The film, written by Payal Kapadia, follows the lives of two nurses from Kerala.

‘All We Imagine as Light’ is Payal Kapadia's third time at Cannes after her short film ‘Afternoon Clouds’ featured in the Cinefondation section in 2017 and ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’ won the Oeil d’Or (Golden Eye) Award for Best Documentary Film in 2021.

Earlier talking about the film to The Indian Express, Payal Kapadia said, “The story is about the city and the people who come to work in Mumbai. They have families back home. But they find new families in friends and colleagues in the city… As I grew older, I have started relying more on friendships. They are my support system too.”
