'Maa' OTT Premiere: Here’s Where You Can Watch Kajol’s Horror Film
Kajol’s horror film ‘Maa’ is finally set for its digital release, blending mythology, emotion, and eerie suspense in one haunting narrative.

Bollywood actress Kajol's first-ever tryst with horror is finally heading to OTT! ‘Maa’, the mythological horror thriller directed by Vishal Furia, is set to premiere on Netflix on August 22, the streamer confirmed on Thursday. The film, which marked a bold shift in genre for Kajol, had earlier garnered praise for her emotionally charged performance even as the horror elements received mixed reviews.
Netflix India announced the digital premiere through an Instagram post, writing: “Jab rakshak ek maa ho to har bhakshak ki haar hogi. Watch Maa, out 22 August, on Netflix.”
The caption echoed the film’s core theme: a mother rising as a divine force to battle unspeakable evil and protect her daughter.
Directed by ‘Chhorii’ and ‘Bali’ fame Vishal Furia, the film is produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak.
‘Maa’ starred Kajol in the lead alongside Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma. Saiwyn Quadras penned the screenplay, while Sandeep Francis handled editing. The music is composed by Harsh Upadhyay, Rocky Khanna, and Shiv Malhotra.
The story follows Aambika (played by Kajol), a grieving mother who, after her husband’s mysterious and supernatural death, returns with her daughter to his ancestral village. What begins as a visit soon spirals into a horrifying descent as they uncover a demonic curse lurking in the shadows – threatening not only their peace but their lives.
Upon its theatrical release, ‘Maa’ received a lukewarm critical response for its horror elements, which many felt were underplayed. However, Kajol’s intense portrayal of a mother-turned-warrior against evil was widely appreciated. The film earned Rs 36.08 crore at the Indian box office and Rs 49 crore worldwide.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kajol reflected on the audience’s reactions earlier, “I wasn't that unsettled by it, probably because I did it. But everyone around me had the same reaction (makes disgusted face). They said, 'I can't see you like this'. But that's what horror is, and that's why it will be particularly effective.”
With its upcoming Netflix release, ‘Maa’ is set for a second life – this time reaching horror and Kajol fans across the globe.
