Akshay Kumar is stepping into unfamiliar territory with ‘Haiwaan’, and the film’s trailer suggests that the actor is ready to embrace a character with almost no redeeming qualities. Directed by Priyadarshan, the action thriller brings Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan together on screen for the first time in 18 years, but this reunion is far removed from the light-hearted chemistry audiences have previously seen from the duo. The 2-minute-34-second trailer centres on a deadly pursuit.

Saif plays a visually impaired man whose heightened senses make him far more capable than his disability might initially suggest, while Akshay appears as a cold-blooded criminal who believes he can eliminate anyone who gets in his way.

The trailer opens with an atmosphere of unease as a series of disturbing events leave the city gripped by fear. At the centre of the chaos is Saif’s character, a blind lift operator and father who unexpectedly becomes a witness to a murder. The killer makes a crucial mistake: he assumes that a man who cannot see him cannot identify him.

But Saif’s character is not an ordinary witness. His ability to identify voices, detect smells and rely heavily on his hearing allows him to reconstruct details surrounding the crime. What initially appears to be a major disadvantage gradually becomes his greatest weapon.
Akshay appears to be the biggest surprise of ‘Haiwaan’. His character is not presented as an antagonist with a hidden emotional side or a complicated moral code. Instead, the actor has described the role as unapologetically evil.
‘Haiwaan’ also marks another collaboration between Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar, a combination that has delivered some of Hindi cinema’s most popular entertainers, including 'Hera Pheri' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa'. This time, however, the filmmaker is moving into considerably darker territory.
The film is a Hindi adaptation of Priyadarshan’s 2016 Malayalam thriller 'Oppam', which starred Mohanlal.
The film boasts a strong supporting cast that expands the mystery beyond its two central characters. Boman Irani appears as a judge, while Saiyami Kher takes on the role of a police officer. Shriya Pilgaonkar and Sharib Hashmi are also part of the ensemble.
For fans of the two stars, 'Haiwaan' carries another major attraction. Akshay and Saif are sharing screen space again after a gap of 18 years. Their previous collaboration was ‘Tashan’ in 2008, but their association goes much further back. The actors first worked together in the 1994 films 'Main Khiladi Tu Anari' and 'Yeh Dillagi'. They subsequently reunited for 'Tu Chor Main Sipahi' in 1996 and 'Keemat' in 1998.
