From Sara Ali Khan to Rasha Thadani, a look at star kids' Bollywood debuts.

Bollywood loves a big debut. But when the newcomer comes from a film family, the launch is never just a film release – it becomes a full-blown industry event. The surname brings curiosity, pressure, comparisons and, of course, box-office scrutiny from Day 1. Some star kids have arrived with blockbusters, some have opened well and then slowed down, while others discovered immediately that legacy can create noise but cannot guarantee ticket sales. Over the decades, industry stalwarts have built multi-crore launching pads designed to showcase the next generation of acting dynasties. Yet, despite massive budgets, chart-topping music albums, and intense media blitzes, the final verdict always rests with the audience.

From Alia Bhatt to Ahaan Panday, several Bollywood star kids have showcased their acting talent over several years.

Without further ado, check out the list below:

1. Hrithik Roshan (Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai)

Hrithik Roshan, son of actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, had one of the most solid star-kid debuts in Bollywood history with ‘Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’. Directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan, the romantic thriller released on January 14, 2000, and starred Hrithik opposite another newcomer, Ameesha Patel. The film mixed romance, action, music and a double-role twist, instantly turning Hrithik into a national craze. Box-office-wise, this was a dream launch. As per Sacnilk, the movie made Rs 78.93 crore worldwide, with Rs 44.10 crore India net, against a reported Rs 10 crore budget. The movie earned Hrithik a rare double-win at the Filmfare Awards for both Best Male Debut and Best Actor.

2. Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor Khan (Refugee)

Few debuts came with as much legacy weight as ‘Refugee’. On June 30, 2000, the Indian film industry witnessed one of its most anticipated joint launches when Abhishek Bachchan, son of megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and Kareena Kapoor, granddaughter of the legendary Raj Kapoor, starred together in ‘Refugee’. Directed by J.P. Dutta, this intense cross-border romantic drama featured a supporting cast including Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, and Anupam Kher, following the emotional journey of an unnamed agent who helps refugees navigate the Great Rann of Kutch. Despite the hype around both star kids, ‘Refugee’ was not a blockbuster. Its heavy theme, complex political backdrop, and pacing limited its long-term momentum. Sacnilk listed the film at Rs 34.41 crore worldwide, with Rs 17.01 crore India net, against a Rs 14 crore budget.

3. Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna (Barsaat)

Bobby Deol, son of late Dharmendra, and Twinkle Khanna, daughter of late Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, made their acting debuts together in ‘Barsaat’. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and released on October 6, 1995, the romantic action drama also featured Mukesh Khanna and Raj Babbar. The film was designed as a full-scale launch vehicle, with romance, action and music all packed around the fresh pair. The gamble worked. ‘Barsaat’ earned Rs 33.90 crore worldwide, with Rs 19.04 crore India net, against an Rs 8 crore budget, making Bobby and Twinkle’s debut one of the more successful star-kid launches of the 1990s.

4. Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor (Saawariya)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s visually extravagant romance ‘Saawariya’, released on November 9, 2007, served as the lavish launching pad for Ranbir Kapoor, son of late Rishi Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor. The film also starred Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji in important roles. A dreamy romance, the film was inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story ‘White Nights’, immediately recognisable by its distinct, melancholic blue-hued sets. Despite immense hype, the film suffered a devastating commercial blow due to a box office clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s massive entertainer ‘Om Shanti Om’. Audiences found the abstract storytelling and slow pacing polarizing, leading to a lifetime worldwide collection of Rs 39.13 crore, with Rs 22.31 crore India net, against a Rs 45 crore budget. However, Ranbir Kapoor's charismatic screen presence managed to win him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

5. Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan (Student Of The Year)

Karan Johar’s ‘Student Of The Year’ launched three newcomers, but from the star-kid lens, the focus was on Alia Bhatt, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, and Varun Dhawan, son of filmmaker David Dhawan. Released on October 19, 2012, the campus romantic drama also starred Sidharth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor and Ronit Roy, among others. The film revolved around friendship, rivalry, romance and a glossy school competition. Commercially, the launch worked well. ‘Student Of The Year’ minted Rs 96 crore worldwide, with Rs 70 crore India net, against a Rs 59 crore budget. It became a strong launchpad for Alia and Varun, both of whom went on to become major mainstream Hindi-film names.

6. Shraddha Kapoor (Teen Patti)

Shraddha Kapoor, daughter of veteran actor Shakti Kapoor, had an unconventional start in Bollywood, making her acting debut in the thriller ‘Teen Patti’ on February 26, 2010. Directed by Leena Yadav, the film boasted a massive ensemble cast that included Indian megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Hollywood legend Ben Kingsley, alongside R. Madhavan and Raima Sen. The plot revolved around a mathematics professor trying to write a thesis on probability by relating it to the Indian card game Teen Patti, with Shraddha playing a college student drawn into the underground gambling rings. Despite the heavy-hitting cast and a very unique premise, the film failed completely to connect with the audience. Made on a budget of around Rs 18 crore, ‘Teen Patti’ ended its theatrical run with a dismal lifetime domestic net collection of just Rs 4.76 crore and a worldwide gross of Rs 7.63 crore. She later found her breakthrough with ‘Aashiqui 2’ and became one of the industry's most bankable stars.

7. Sonakshi Sinha (Dabangg)

Sonakshi Sinha, daughter of veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha, made a massive cinematic debut on September 10, 2010, in the high-octane masala action film ‘Dabangg’. Directed by Abhinav Kashyap, the movie also featured Salman Khan as the iconic cop Chulbul Pandey, alongside Arbaaz Khan, Sonu Sood, and Vinod Khanna. Sonakshi’s portrayal of the graceful yet fiery village girl Rajjo gave her instant household recognition. The film became a historic commercial phenomenon from its very first day, breaking opening-day and opening-weekend records across India. Made on a budget of roughly Rs 41 crore, ‘Dabangg’ went on to accumulate a staggering domestic net collection of Rs 141.24 crore and a massive worldwide gross of Rs 219.27 crore.

8. Arjun Kapoor (Ishaqzaade)

Arjun Kapoor, son of producer Boney Kapoor and Mona Shourie Kapoor, made his debut with ‘Ishaqzaade’, a far grittier launch than the usual glossy star-kid vehicle. Directed by Habib Faisal and released on May 11, 2012, the romantic thriller starred Arjun opposite Parineeti Chopra. Set against a violent political backdrop, the film followed two young lovers from rival families whose relationship begins with deception and later turns into a tragic romance. The film was a commercial success. ‘Ishaqzaade’ earned Rs 61.28 crore worldwide, with Rs 45.39 crore India net, against a reported Rs 16 crore budget.

9. Tiger Shroff (Heropanti)

Tiger Shroff, son of Jackie Shroff, entered Bollywood with ‘Heropanti’. Directed by Sabbir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film released on May 23, 2014, and starred Tiger opposite Kriti Sanon, who also made her Hindi film debut with the project. The action-romance revolved around young love, family opposition and Tiger’s heavy action image. The debut worked strongly at the box office. It made Rs 75.90 crore worldwide, with Rs 52.70 crore India net, against a Rs 25 crore budget. The film immediately established Tiger’s USP: dance and action.

10. Janhvi Kapoor (Dhadak)

On July 20, 2018, Janhvi Kapoor, daughter of the legendary actress Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, made her acting debut in the tragic romantic drama ‘Dhadak’. Directed by Shashank Khaitan and backed by Dharma Productions, the movie was the official Hindi adaptation of the critically acclaimed Marathi film ‘Sairat’. It paired Janhvi with Ishaan Khatter, alongside a supporting cast led by Ashutosh Rana. The film opened to strong numbers and sustained its performance well. It earned a total domestic net collection of Rs 74.19 crore and wound up with a worldwide gross of Rs 113 crore, against a Rs 30 crore budget.

11. Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty (Hero)

Sooraj Pancholi, son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, and Athiya Shetty, daughter of Suniel Shetty, made their debut together in ‘Hero’. Directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai, the film released on September 11, 2015. A remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 film of the same name, it followed a gangster’s son and the daughter of a police officer who fall in love. The film did not become the major launch vehicle many expected, but it did not completely collapse either. Sacnilk reported Rs 49 crore worldwide, with Rs 33.47 crore India net, against a Rs 32 crore budget, and marked the film average.

12. Sara Ali Khan (Kedarnath)

Sara Ali Khan, daughter of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, made her debut with Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Kedarnath’. Released on December 7, 2018, the romantic drama starred Sara opposite late Sushant Singh Rajput. Set around the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the film followed the love story of a Hindu girl and a Muslim porter against the backdrop of pilgrimage, social resistance and natural disaster. Sara’s confident screen presence and sharp dialogue delivery earned widespread acclaim from both viewers and critics. The film gave Sara a solid start. ‘Kedarnath’ minted Rs 96 crore worldwide, with Rs 68.57 crore India net, against a Rs 50 crore budget.

13. Ananya Panday (Student of the Year 2)

Ananya Panday, daughter of actor Chunky Panday, made her foray into Bollywood with the glossy sequel ‘Student of the Year 2’, which released on May 10, 2019. Directed by Punit Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, the movie also featured Tiger Shroff, Aditya Seal and fellow debutante Tara Sutaria. The film attempted to recreate the high-school glamour and chart-topping musical success of the 2012 original, positioning Ananya as the feisty, privileged campus diva Shreya Randhawa. Despite massive promotional campaigns and highly stylized music videos, the film opened to mostly negative reviews, with critics panning the unrealistic script. However, thanks to a strong franchise recall value, it managed to do decent business. ‘SOTY 2’ earned Rs 95.50 crore worldwide, with Rs 70.86 crore India net, against a Rs 75 crore budget.

14. Ahan Shetty (Tadap)

Ahan Shetty, son of Suniel Shetty, made his acting debut with ‘Tadap’. Directed by Milan Luthria and released on December 3, 2021, the film starred Ahan opposite Tara Sutaria, with Saurabh Shukla, Kumud Mishra and Sikandar Kher in supporting roles. A remake of the Telugu film ‘RX 100’, the film followed an intense, violent and obsessive romance. The movie had a modest but respectable theatrical run. It made Rs 33 crore worldwide, with Rs 26.81 crore India net, against a Rs 20 crore budget.

15. Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani (Azaad)

Aaman Devgan, Ajay Devgn’s nephew, and Rasha Thadani, daughter of Raveena Tandon, made their acting debuts with ‘Azaad’. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor and released on January 17, 2025, the period action drama also starred Ajay Devgn and Diana Penty. Commercially, the film struggled badly. It only made Rs 8.69 crore worldwide, with Rs 7.42 crore India net. For both newcomers, the visibility was there, but the box office was weak.

16. Ahaan Panday (Saiyaara)

Ahaan Panday, son of Chikki Panday and nephew of Chunky Panday, made his Bollywood debut with Mohit Suri’s ‘Saiyaara’. The YRF-backed movie, co-starring Aneet Padda, released in theatres on July 18, 2025. The romantic musical drama revolved around a troubled musician and a young woman whose emotional bond becomes the heart of the story. This became one of the rare dream debuts of recent years. ‘Saiyaara’ minted Rs 570.33 crore total gross, with Rs 329.2 crore India net. For Ahaan, this was not just a successful debut — it was a blockbuster launch most star kids can only dream of.

17. Shanaya Kapoor (Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan)

Shanaya Kapoor, daughter of Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor, made her Bollywood acting debut with ‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’. Directed by Santosh Singh and released on July 11, 2025, the romantic drama starred Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor in the lead roles. Inspired by Ruskin Bond’s short story ‘The Eyes Have It’, the film revolved around a visually impaired musician and a theatre artist, giving Shanaya a softer, performance-oriented launch rather than a conventional glossy star-kid debut. However, the film struggled at the box office, making only Rs 2.8 crore.

Honourable Mentions

Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor (Loveyapa)

Junaid Khan, son of Aamir Khan, had already made his acting debut on OTT with ‘Maharaj’, while Khushi Kapoor, daughter of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, had appeared in Netflix’s ‘The Archies’. But ‘Loveyapa’ was their first major theatrical Hindi film test together. Directed by Advait Chandan and released on February 7, 2025, the rom-com also starred Ashutosh Rana and was a Hindi remake of the Tamil hit ‘Love Today’. The story followed a young couple forced to exchange phones before marriage, leading to chaos, secrets and emotional reckoning. At the box office, the film underperformed. ‘Loveyapa’ made only Rs 9.56 crore worldwide, with Rs 7.49 crore India net.

Agastya Nanda (Ikkis)

Agastya Nanda, grandson of Amitabh Bachchan and son of Shweta Bachchan Nanda, made his screen debut with Zoya Akhtar’s Netflix film ‘The Archies’, but his first major theatrical test came with ‘Ikkis’. Directed by Sriram Raghavan and released on January 1, 2026, the war drama also starred late Dharmendra, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher and Simar Bhatia. The film was based on the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, one of India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardees, and placed Agastya in a far more serious, performance-heavy space than his OTT debut. At the box office, ‘Ikkis’ had a decent start but did not become a major hit. Sacnilk listed the film’s worldwide collection at Rs 41.65 crore, including Rs 31.85 crore India net, Rs 38.15 crore India gross and Rs 3.50 crore overseas.

The box-office history of Bollywood star-kid debuts proves one thing very clearly: lineage can create the opening conversation, but it cannot control the final verdict.
