Director Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana: Part One’ has finally arrived in theatres worldwide today (November 5), kicking off the lucrative Diwali weekend with a massive box office surge. Mounted on a staggering reported budget of Rs 1,600 crore for its first installment alone, the most expensive Indian film ever made is already translating its pre-release buzz and positive early word-of-mouth into major footfalls across the country. Even with a Thursday weekday release, theatres across several Indian circuits recorded houseful morning shows.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk’s 3:03 PM IST update, ‘Ramayana’ had minted Rs 28.82 crore India net (and Rs 34.01 crore India gross) across 13,899 tracked shows. The opening-day momentum is heavily anchored by the Hindi belt, which accounted for Rs 20.95 crore across 11,485 shows. In the dubbed versions, Kannada contributed Rs 3.45 crore from 701 shows by afternoon, marking a surprisingly measured start on day one despite Kannada superstar Yash headlining the film as the antagonist, Ravana.
Meanwhile, the Telugu version has fared well in the southern circuit with Rs 2.83 crore across 942 shows, while the Tamil and Malayalam versions are largely filling out the lower end of the tally, bringing in Rs 1.05 crore and Rs 54 lakh, respectively.
Across major Indian centres, Jaipur led the Hindi 3D morning wave with 32.0 per cent occupancy (158 shows), closely trailed by Hyderabad at 31.0 per cent (206 shows), Kolkata at 28.0 per cent (299 shows), Bengaluru at 27.0 per cent (316 shows), Bhopal at 26.0 per cent (64 shows), Pune at 24.0 per cent (452 shows), Chandigarh at 22.0 per cent (107 shows), and Chennai at 21.0 per cent (136 shows). Major mass hubs Mumbai (960 shows) and the National Capital Region (NCR) (1,146 shows) registered 20.0 per cent and 18.0 per cent morning 3D occupancy respectively, while Ahmedabad (312 shows) and Lucknow (165 shows) both recorded 17.0 per cent, and Surat (193 shows) stood at 13.0 per cent.
In the Hindi 2D format, NCR accounted for the highest show count in the country with 1,031 screenings (at 16.0 per cent morning occupancy), though Hyderabad topped the morning occupancy chart at 36.0 per cent across 202 shows. Other key 2D morning figures included Jaipur at 30.0 per cent (120 shows), Bengaluru at 22.0 per cent (178 shows), Chennai at 22.0 per cent (18 shows), Mumbai at 19.0 per cent (520 shows), Pune at 18.0 per cent (352 shows), Bhopal at 16.0 per cent (76 shows), Kolkata at 14.0 per cent (190 shows), Ahmedabad at 13.0 per cent (727 shows), Lucknow at 13.0 per cent (153 shows), Chandigarh at 12.0 per cent (112 shows), and Surat at 8.0 per cent (482 shows).
Backed by its massive pre-sales and festive evening walk-ins, trade projections indicate ‘Ramayana’ is locked to breeze past the Rs 70 crore net mark in India on Day 1. In doing so, it will comfortably overhaul the opening-day domestic net hauls of recent Hindi blockbusters including ‘Pathaan’ (Rs 57 crore), Drishyam 2 (Rs 62 crore), and Ranbir Kapoor’s own Animal (Rs 63 crore), while also aiming to topple Jawan (Rs 75 crore). However, the ultimate benchmark for the mythological epic is the all-time Indian opening-day record currently held by ‘Dhurandhar 2’, which collected a mammoth Rs 102 crore on its first day earlier this year.
Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with visual effects giant DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, ‘Ramayana’ is designed as a two-part cinematic event, with music composed by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. The ensemble cast features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. Following today's global rollout of Part One, ‘Ramayana: Part Two’ is slated to hit theatres on Diwali 2028.
