Giant robots, royal conspiracies, undercover operatives and seemingly ordinary men with very dangerous pasts – Tamil cinema’s biggest box-office successes have come in all shapes and sizes. What unites them is their ability to turn a film release into an event, drawing audiences well beyond their home state. Yet, a deafening first-day celebration is only the beginning. A place among the industry’s highest grossers is earned over an entire theatrical run, through repeat viewing, strong holds and audiences showing up across markets.

That conversation is back in the spotlight as ‘Jailer 2’ arrived in cinemas today (October 15). Rajinikanth returned as ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian, with Nelson Dilipkumar back in the director’s chair, Sun Pictures producing and Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. The cast includes returning actor Ramya Krishnan alongside additions such as S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu. With the original already sitting near the top of Tamil cinema’s worldwide rankings, the sequel has a formidable family record to chase before it can claim the overall crown.
Wondering which films make up Tamil cinema’s top 10 worldwide grossers? Here’s the list, starting with the biggest earner.

1. 2.0 (2018) - Rs 691 Crore Worldwide
The robot is still guarding the throne. Directed by S. Shankar, ‘2.0’ brought Rajinikanth back as scientist Vaseegaran and his formidable robot Chitti, with Akshay Kumar as Pakshi Rajan and Amy Jackson as the humanoid Nila. When mobile phones mysteriously fly out of people’s hands in Chennai and assemble into a terrifying supernatural threat, science needs a rather spectacular upgrade. The film turned its human-versus-technology conflict into a visual-effects extravaganza, with enormous action set pieces designed for the big screen.
Sacnilk placed its worldwide gross at Rs 691 crore, keeping it ahead of every other title here. Produced by Lyca Productions and shot in 3D, the film also illustrated why “highest-grossing” and “most profitable” are different conversations: Sacnilk listed its budget at Rs 543 crore. That huge investment made the scale of its earnings worth examining beyond the headline number.
2. Leo (2023) - Rs 605.90 Crore Worldwide
A café owner, a violent confrontation and strangers who insist he is someone else – ‘Leo’ made identity itself the battleground. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the action thriller starred Vijay as Parthiban, whose quiet family life is shattered when gangsters connect him to a man called Leo Das. Trisha played his wife, with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja and Gautham Vasudev Menon in pivotal roles. Behind the snow-covered setting and domestic calm waited a much bloodier history.
Its worldwide gross stands at Rs 605.90 crore, making it Vijay’s highest-grossing film and placing it just Rs 1.40 crore ahead of ‘Jailer’. It was also the third film in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, following ‘Kaithi’ and ‘Vikram’.
3. Jailer (2023) - Rs 604.50 Crore Worldwide
Retirement looked peaceful until Muthuvel Pandian’s family came under threat. In Nelson Dilipkumar’s ‘Jailer’, Rajinikanth played a mild-mannered grandfather whose past as a feared prison officer proved useful when he confronted an idol-smuggling network. Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Vinayakan, Yogi Babu and Sunil formed an important part of the cast, while Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff added star-powered appearances.
The Sun Pictures production collected Rs 604.50 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. Its appeal combined Nelson’s dark humour, Rajinikanth’s controlled menace and Anirudh Ravichander’s crowd-rousing music.
4. Coolie (2025) - Rs 518 Crore Worldwide
Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj joining forces was enough to make ‘Coolie’ a major event. The film followed Deva, a former coolie union leader drawn into a criminal conspiracy while investigating his friend’s suspicious death. Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj and Upendra joined Rajinikanth in the ensemble, with Aamir Khan making a special appearance. Friendship, betrayal and smuggling supplied the fuel for this bruising action drama.
Sacnilk lists its worldwide gross at Rs 518 crore, including Rs 180.50 crore from overseas. One important distinction for Lokesh fans: ‘Coolie’ was a standalone film, not another chapter of the universe containing ‘Kaithi’, ‘Vikram’ and ‘Leo’. Its place on this list gives Rajinikanth three entries in the top four – a substantial reminder of the worldwide audience his films continue to command.
5. Ponniyin Selvan: Part I (2022) - Rs 488.36 Crore Worldwide
Tamil cinema’s box-office giants do not all arrive wearing sunglasses and carrying weapons. Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part I’ found its spectacle in a contested throne, dangerous alliances and the intrigues surrounding the Chola royal family. Adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s celebrated novel, it starred Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, and Trisha. Karthi’s Vandiyathevan carried audiences through a world where a message, a promise or a secret could alter the empire’s future.
The historical epic earned Rs 488.36 crore worldwide on Sacnilk’s tally. Its production story was equally ambitious: both installments were filmed together, with Jayam Ravi revealing that the team completed the two films in roughly 150 shooting days. The result put Mani Ratnam’s long-cherished adaptation firmly among Tamil cinema’s biggest theatrical earners.
6. The Greatest Of All Time (2024) - Rs 457.12 Crore Worldwide
Why settle for one Vijay when the story can put two versions of him on opposite sides? Directed by Venkat Prabhu, ‘The Greatest of All Time’ featured the actor as both father and son in an action thriller about a former counterterrorism operative whose past returns to threaten his family. Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Sneha, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ajmal Ameer and Mohan formed the supporting ensemble, giving the film an additional helping of familiar faces.
Sacnilk records its worldwide gross at Rs 457.12 crore. Digital de-ageing helped create the younger Vijay, making the technology part of the storytelling rather than merely a brief flashback device. The film also packed in references and callbacks for longtime fans. Its title may have invited an unusually ambitious comparison, but its position here rests on a straightforward measure: the worldwide theatrical money it collected.
7. Vikram (2022) - Rs 414.43 Crore Worldwide
Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’ arrived with enough acting firepower to light up several films. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, it brought Haasan together with Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi, with Narain, Kalidas Jayaram and Gayathrie in supporting roles. An investigation into killings carried out by masked men gradually exposed a much larger battle involving covert operatives and a powerful drug network. Identities shifted, loyalties were tested and Haasan’s formidable alter ego emerged from the shadows.
The film collected Rs 414.43 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, it expanded the world introduced in ‘Kaithi’, while Suriya’s appearance as Rolex gave viewers another major character to anticipate. It was a theatrical comeback with consequences beyond one successful film: ‘Vikram’ helped turn Lokesh’s interconnected crime stories into a major audience attraction.
8. Ponniyin Selvan: Part II (2023) - Rs 344.63 Crore Worldwide
The return to the Chola empire traded some of the first film’s journeying adventure for emotional reckonings. Directed again by Mani Ratnam, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part II’ reunited Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Trisha. Threats to the royal family intensified, while Aditha Karikalan’s unresolved history with Nandini brought love, resentment and revenge into the same room. Aishwarya’s dual roles as Nandini and Mandakini added another layer to the sprawling story.
Sacnilk puts its worldwide gross at Rs 344.63 crore. Although that was below the first installment’s collection, it remained a substantial global total, with Rs 130 crore coming from overseas. Both chapters ultimately earned individual places among Tamil cinema’s ten highest grossers.
9. Amaran (2024) - Rs 333.67 Crore Worldwide
Among the fictional empires and larger-than-life action heroes, ‘Amaran’ found its emotional force in a real soldier’s life. Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, the biographical war drama starred Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan and Sai Pallavi as his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, with Rahul Bose and Bhuvan Arora in supporting roles. It followed Mukund’s military service alongside the relationship and family life that made his sacrifices deeply personal.
The film collected Rs 333.67 crore worldwide. Backed by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures Films India, it gave Sivakarthikeyan his first Rs 300 crore worldwide grosser. That achievement makes its place here especially notable: this was a career-expanding success built around a biographical story, rather than an established franchise or a returning screen character.
10. Jana Nayagan (2026) - Rs 324.68 Crore Worldwide
Vijay’s film farewell carried expectations that extended well beyond the usual opening-day celebrations. Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ starred Vijay alongside Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Prakash Raj. Its story followed a former police officer protecting his adopted daughter while being pulled into a larger confrontation with dangerous adversaries. The blend of personal stakes, action and political messaging made it a closely watched release.
Sacnilk’s current worldwide tally stands at Rs 324.68 crore, putting it tenth on this list and making it the highest-grossing Tamil release of 2026 so far. It overtook Suriya’s ‘Karuppu’ during its run, but remained below ‘Amaran’ in worldwide collections. Billed as Vijay’s final film before concentrating on politics, the KVN Productions project secured him a third entry in this top ten, alongside ‘Leo’ and ‘The Greatest of All Time’.
For ‘Jailer 2’, the targets are clear: Rs 604.50 crore to surpass its predecessor and more than Rs 691 crore to take the top spot on this ranking. The early indicators suggest strong demand. Sacnilk’s release-morning tracker recorded Rs 37.60 crore in Indian first-day advance bookings, excluding blocked seats, as of 6 am on October 15; separately, its pre-release forecast suggested a Rs 100 crore-plus worldwide opening, potentially around Rs 125 crore.
Rajinikanth has the franchise recognition and global audience to mount a challenge. Word of mouth, repeat viewing and the weeks after the initial rush will decide whether the Tiger can actually climb to number one.
