Friday Wars: Biggest Indian Box Office Showdowns Of Last Decade
From ‘Raees’ vs ‘Kaabil’ and ‘Gadar 2’ vs ‘OMG 2’ to ‘Dunki’ vs ‘Salaar’, here’s a look at the biggest Indian box-office clashes of the last decade and how they played out.
In the high-stakes world of the Indian box office, there is nothing quite as thrilling – or as financially terrifying for producers – as a major festival clash. When two highly anticipated films lock horns on a Friday, it sparks fan wars, divides screen counts, and turns the theatrical business into a blood sport. Over the last decade, we have witnessed some historic showdowns where titans collided. Sometimes, the market expanded to accommodate both blockbusters, while at other times, one film completely decimated the other.
Bollywood stars have gone head-to-head with each other, Hindi films have clashed with South biggies, and holiday weekends have turned into crowded battlegrounds. From Raees vs Kaabil and Laal Singh Chaddha vs Raksha Bandhan to Gadar 2 vs OMG 2, these clashes proved that release dates can shape a film’s fate almost as much as content.
Here is a look at some of the most massive Indian box-office clashes of the last decade, diving into the numbers to see who survived and who conquered.
Without further ado, check out the list below:
1. Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani
Pushing right to the edge of the last decade is the legendary clash of December 18, 2015. Rohit Shetty’s ‘Dilwale’ brought back the iconic pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, alongside Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, promising a massive masala entertainer. It faced Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’, a visually spectacular historical romance starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra.
‘Dilwale’ opened huge, leveraging SRK's unparalleled overseas market to pull in a massive Rs 388 crore worldwide. However, it faced heavy criticism for its weak script. ‘Bajirao Mastani’, on the other hand, grew exponentially on extraordinary word-of-mouth and critical acclaim. It eventually overtook ‘Dilwale’ in the domestic market, closing its worldwide gross at Rs 357 crore and sweeping the award season, turning Ranveer Singh into a bankable star.
2. Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro
The 2016 Independence Day weekend saw Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan go head-to-head with two very different films. ‘Rustom’, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, released on August 12, 2016, and starred Akshay Kumar, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Arjan Bajwa. The film was inspired by the K. M. Nanavati case and positioned Akshay as a decorated naval officer caught in a murder trial.
On the same day came ‘Mohenjo Daro’, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, starring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde. It was mounted as a large-scale period adventure set in the Indus Valley civilisation. But while ‘Mohenjo Daro’ had scale and ambition, ‘Rustom’ had tighter storytelling, patriotic appeal and stronger word-of-mouth. ‘Rustom’ collected around Rs 216.35 crore worldwide, while ‘Mohenjo Daro’ earned around Rs 107.90 crore worldwide. Akshay’s film emerged as the clear winner, while Hrithik’s period drama became a disappointment.
3. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil vs Shivaay
Diwali 2016 (October 28) delivered a clash that turned incredibly sour off-screen, leading to severed friendships and trade accusations. Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ – a glossy romantic drama starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – went up against Ajay Devgn’s directorial venture, ‘Shivaay’, a high-octane action thriller starring Ajay and Sayyeshaa.
The urban multiplex audience overwhelmingly favoured ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, driven by its chartbuster soundtrack and star appeal. It grossed a massive Rs 240 crore globally. ‘Shivaay’, despite being praised for its breathtaking action sequences and cinematography, struggled to find footing outside of mass centres and single screens, ending its worldwide run at roughly Rs 147 crore.
4. Raees vs Kaabil
The Republic Day weekend of 2017 (January 25) saw a bitter, highly publicised clash that divided the trade industry. Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Raees’, a gritty crime drama starring Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, locked horns with Sanjay Gupta’s ‘Kaabil’, an intense revenge thriller featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam.
With both films splitting the screens 50-50, the box office was heavily dented for both parties. ‘Raees’ took the initial lead due to SRK’s massive stardom and a hit soundtrack, finishing with a worldwide gross of around Rs 285 crore. ‘Kaabil’, heavily dependent on Hrithik Roshan's strong performance, held its ground well, rounding out its global run at roughly Rs 178.10 crore. While both films made money, trade experts widely agreed that a solo release would have allowed both to earn significantly more.
5. Secret Superstar vs Golmaal Again
Diwali 2017 brought a classic clash of genres: a heartfelt, content-driven drama versus a massive, multi-starrer comedy franchise. Advait Chandan’s ‘Secret Superstar’, starring Zaira Wasim with an extended cameo by Aamir Khan, released on October 19, 2017. A day later, Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal Again’ hit theaters, featuring Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Tabu, and Arshad Warsi, among others.
In India, ‘Golmaal Again’ was the undisputed king, destroying records to gross Rs 308 crore worldwide, perfectly capturing the festive mood. However, the story didn't end there. ‘Secret Superstar’ found unprecedented, historic success upon its release in China months later. Fuelled by Aamir Khan's massive popularity in the country, the small-budget drama ended up with a mind-boggling final worldwide gross of Rs 912 crore, technically making it the far bigger earner globally.
6. Gold vs Satyameva Jayate
The Independence Day clash on August 15, 2018, was a battle of patriotism versus vigilante justice. Reema Kagti’s ‘Gold’, starring Akshay Kumar and Mouni Roy, told the inspiring story of India’s first Olympic gold medal as an independent nation. Clashing with it was Milap Zaveri’s ‘Satyameva Jayate’, a loud, unapologetic mass-action film starring John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee.
The holiday date proved big enough for both. ‘Gold’ took the lead at multiplexes, pulling in a worldwide gross of approximately Rs 158 crore. However, ‘Satyameva Jayate’ surprised everyone by dominating single screens across the heartland. Made on a much tighter budget, it successfully
capitalized on its massy dialogues and hit music to gross over Rs 121 crore globally, proving to be a highly profitable venture.
7. Zero vs KGF: Chapter 1
December 21, 2018, marked the exact moment the balance of power began shifting heavily toward Pan-Indian cinema. Aanand L. Rai’s ‘Zero’, a highly ambitious, VFX-heavy romantic drama starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma, was the undeniable Bollywood heavyweight. It clashed with Prashanth Neel’s ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’, starring Yash and Srinidhi Shetty, a Kannada film being dubbed into multiple languages.
Despite the hype, ‘Zero’ was rejected by audiences for its disjointed second half, crashing to a worldwide gross of just Rs 178 crore against a massive Rs 200 crore budget. Meanwhile, ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’ started slowly in the Hindi belt but built an incredible cult following through sheer word-of-mouth. It went on to gross Rs 237 crore worldwide, turning Yash into a national phenomenon and laying the groundwork for the monstrous Rs 1200-crore success of its sequel.
8. Mission Mangal vs Batla House
Independence Day 2019 saw Akshay Kumar and John Abraham clash again, this time with ‘Mission Mangal’ and ‘Batla House’. ‘Mission Mangal’, directed by Jagan Shakti, starred Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari and Sharman Joshi. The film was inspired by ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission and came with strong patriotic and family appeal.
‘Batla House’, directed by Nikkhil Advani, featured John Abraham, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan and Nora Fatehi. It was inspired by the 2008 Batla House encounter case. ‘Mission Mangal’ dominated the clash with around Rs 291 crore worldwide. ‘Batla House’ also held its ground, collecting around Rs 127 crore worldwide.
9. War vs Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy
October 2, 2019 turned into a massive Indian box-office day with ‘War’ and ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ releasing together. ‘War’, directed by Siddharth Anand, starred Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor. It was released as a slick YRF action spectacle and opened to a historic response in Hindi markets.
‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’, directed by Surender Reddy, starred Chiranjeevi, Amitabh Bachchan, Nayanthara, Sudeep, Vijay Sethupathi, Tamannaah Bhatia and Jagapathi Babu. The Telugu period action film was based on freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy and had massive star value across South markets. ‘War’ collected Rs 471 crore worldwide, while ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ earned around Rs 246 crore worldwide across languages. ‘War’ dominated the box office, but as a pan-India release day, this was one of the biggest cross-industry showdowns of 2019.
10. Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior vs Chhapaak
Released on January 10, 2020, this clash was highly politicized and closely watched. Om Raut’s grand historical epic ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, starring Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, and Kajol, went up against Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Chhapaak’, a sensitive social drama based on the life of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, starring Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey.
The box office results were heavily skewed. ‘Tanhaji’ struck a massive chord with the masses, particularly in Maharashtra, benefiting from incredible visual effects and a strong nationalist undertone. ‘Tanhaji’ told the story of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare and stormed to a worldwide gross of Rs 361 crore, emerging as the biggest hit of 2020 before the pandemic hit. ‘Chhapaak’, dealing with a heavy, grim subject and facing localized political backlash, struggled at the ticket windows, wrapping its global run at around Rs 55.50 crore.
11. Laal Singh Chaddha vs Raksha Bandhan
Not all clashes are victorious; some are mutually destructive. The Independence Day weekend of August 11, 2022, saw Aamir Khan’s highly anticipated ‘Forrest Gump’ adaptation, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ (directed by Advait Chandan and co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan), clash with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar’s family drama ‘Raksha Bandhan’, directed by Aanand L. Rai.
Both films completely crashed. Suffering from heavy boycott campaigns on social media and a general post-pandemic disconnect with audiences, the numbers were disastrous. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, made on a massive Rs 180 crore budget, folded at roughly Rs 133 crore worldwide (performing decently only in overseas markets), while its domestic net was a shocking Rs 61 crore. ‘Raksha Bandhan’ fared even worse, wrapping up its lifetime worldwide run at around Rs 68.38 crore.
12. Vikram Vedha vs Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1
On September 30, 2022, Hindi cinema and Tamil cinema went into a major showdown with ‘Vikram Vedha’ and ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’. ‘Vikram Vedha’, directed by Pushkar-Gayathri, starred Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Rohit Saraf. It was the Hindi remake of the directors’ own Tamil film of the same name.
‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’, directed by Mani Ratnam, starred Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj and Jayaram. The Tamil historical epic was based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s classic novel. ‘Vikram Vedha’ collected around Rs 135 crore worldwide, while ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’ earned Rs 488.36 crore worldwide across languages. It was a clear case of a regional epic becoming the larger national box-office story.
13. Gadar 2 vs OMG 2
August 11, 2023, was a phenomenal weekend for the Hindi film industry, proving that audiences were back in theatres in full force. Anil Sharma’s ‘Gadar 2’ brought back Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in their iconic roles as Tara Singh and Sakeena, 22 years after the original. It faced Amit Rai’s ‘OMG 2’, a satirical comedy-drama tackling sex education, starring Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam and Akshay Kumar.
‘Gadar 2’ rode a massive wave of nostalgia and single-screen hysteria, defying all critical expectations to pull in an astounding Rs 686 crore worldwide, completely revitalizing Sunny Deol's career. However, the true surprise was ‘OMG 2’. Despite being handed an 'A' certificate by the censor board and competing for screens against a mammoth mass entertainer, the film relied on brilliant content to gross Rs 221 crore worldwide. Both films flourished, marking one of the healthiest box office clashes in history.
14. Animal vs Sam Bahadur
December 1, 2023, offered a fascinating study in counter-programming. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s unapologetically toxic, violently stylized ‘Animal’ – starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri – clashed with Meghna Gulzar’s patriotic biopic ‘Sam Bahadur’, starring Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Despite the heavy A-rating and a runtime exceeding three hours, ‘Animal’ unleashed absolute havoc at the box office, minting a jaw-dropping Rs 915 crore worldwide. Made on a budget of Rs 200 crore, it completely hijacked the cultural conversation. Yet, ‘Sam Bahadur’ held its own with extreme grace. Relying on stellar reviews for Vicky Kaushal’s performance as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the biopic (made on a budget of Rs 55 crore) found its audience, enjoying a slow and steady run to gross over Rs 130 crore worldwide, turning a solid profit despite the ‘Animal’ onslaught.
15. Dunki vs Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire
The Christmas weekend of 2023 brought an unprecedented clash between two of India's biggest superstars: Shah Rukh Khan and Prabhas. Released on December 21, 2023, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Dunki’, starring SRK, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani and Vicky Kaushal, tackled the emotional subject of illegal immigration. Just a day later, on December 22, Prashanth Neel’s hyper-violent action saga ‘Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’ hit theatres, starring Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Shruti Haasan.
The clash became incredibly heated over screen allocations, especially in single screens down South and multiplexes in the North. ‘Dunki’ managed a very respectable Rs 454 crore at the worldwide box office, largely propelled by overseas markets. However, it fell short of the astronomical Rs 1000-crore benchmarks SRK had set earlier that year with ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’. ‘Salaar’, capitalizing on mass-action hysteria and Prabhas’ loyal fanbase, bulldozed its way to a massive Rs 617 crore worldwide gross, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of the year in India.
16. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan vs Maidaan
Eid 2024 was expected to revive Bollywood’s box office with two major films: ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ and ‘Maidaan’. ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, released on April 11, 2024, and starred Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manushi Chhillar, Alaya F and Sonakshi Sinha.
‘Maidaan’, directed by Amit Sharma, had paid previews on April 10 and released widely around the Eid window. It starred Ajay Devgn, Priyamani and Gajraj Rao and told the story of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Despite strong reviews for Ajay’s performance and the film’s emotional sports-drama appeal, ‘Maidaan’ struggled theatrically. ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ collected around Rs 111 crore worldwide, while ‘Maidaan’ earned around Rs 71 crore worldwide. Both films underperformed, making Eid 2024 one of Bollywood’s most underwhelming holiday clashes.
17. Stree 2 vs Vedaa vs Khel Khel Mein
Independence Day 2024 turned into a three-way clash between ‘Stree 2’, ‘Vedaa’ and ‘Khel Khel Mein’. ‘Stree 2’, directed by Amar Kaushik, starred Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee. As part of Maddock’s horror-comedy universe, the film arrived with huge franchise anticipation. ‘Vedaa’, directed by Nikkhil Advani, starred John Abraham, Sharvari, Abhishek Banerjee and Tamannaah Bhatia. ‘Khel Khel Mein’, directed by Mudassar Aziz, starred Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Ammy Virk, Fardeen Khan, Aditya Seal and Pragya Jaiswal.
But once the films opened, the competition became one-sided. ‘Stree 2’ exploded at the box office, collecting around Rs 857.15 crore worldwide. ‘Khel Khel Mein’ collected around Rs 57 crore worldwide, while ‘Vedaa’ ended at around Rs 30 crore worldwide. This clash showed how franchise love and audience approval can completely overwhelm star-led alternatives.
18. Singham Again vs Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3
Diwali 2024 (November 1, 2024) witnessed one of the most closely contested battles in recent memory when Rohit Shetty’s cop-universe behemoth, ‘Singham Again’, went head-to-head with Anees Bazmee’s horror-comedy threequel, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’. The sheer star power on display was staggering. ‘Singham Again’ boasted an Avengers-level Bollywood cast featuring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff and Arjun Kapoor. On the other side, Kartik Aaryan returned as Rooh Baba alongside Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit, and Triptii Dimri.
While ‘Singham Again’ initially took the lead in India, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ held its ground remarkably well due to fantastic word-of-mouth and family audience appeal. As the weeks progressed, the horror-comedy narrowed the gap. By the end of their primary runs, both films were neck-and-neck. ‘Singham Again’ closed its worldwide gross at approximately Rs 372 crore, while ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ soared past Rs 401 crore globally, proving that a fun horror-comedy can effectively challenge a massive action tentpole.
19. Raid 2 vs HIT: The Third Case vs Retro
The Labour Day weekend of May 1, 2025, gave the Indian box office one of its healthiest and most lucrative three-way Pan-Indian clashes of the decade. Locking horns were three major regional heavyweights: Raj Kumar Gupta’s Hindi thriller ‘Raid 2’ starring Ajay Devgn and Riteish Deshmukh, Sailesh Kolanu’s Telugu neo-noir crime thriller ‘HIT: The Third Case’ starring Nani and Srinidhi Shetty, and Karthik Subbaraj’s Tamil romantic actioner ‘Retro’ starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde. Remarkably, the sheer variety in genres and localised star power allowed all three films to flourish without heavily cannibalizing each other's business.
‘Raid 2’ led the pack financially. Overcoming initial slow momentum, the Ajay Devgn-starrer enjoyed an excellent trend in multiplexes and single screens alike, ultimately securing a worldwide gross of approximately Rs 237 crore. Down South, ‘HIT: The Third Case’ capitalized on the massive goodwill of its preceding films to take a phenomenal opening. It emerged as a clear success, grossing a solid Rs 119 crore globally. Meanwhile, Suriya’s ‘Retro’ rode strong advance bookings and fantastic opening weekend occupancy in Tamil Nadu to secure its own slice of the pie, ending its worldwide run at Rs 97 crore.
20. Housefull 5 vs Thug Life
The first week of June 2025 delivered a highly anticipated clash between a massive Bollywood comedy franchise and an iconic actor-director reunion from the South. Released on June 6, 2025, Tarun Mansukhani’s ‘Housefull 5’ brought back Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh to anchor the chaotic, multi-starrer comedy universe. Just a day prior, on June 5, 2025, theatres saw the release of ‘Thug Life’, an intense gangster drama that marked the monumental reunion of megastar Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam, 38 years after their masterpiece ‘Nayakan’. The massive scale of both films promised an intense box-office battle.
However, the clash turned out to be entirely one-sided. ‘Housefull 5’, despite mixed critical reviews and an average commercial trajectory by the franchise's lofty standards, still dominated the ticket windows, grossing Rs 288.67 crore. On the other hand, ‘Thug Life’ met with an overwhelmingly disappointing fate. Hampered by a predictable screenplay, negative word-of-mouth, and an unfortunate ban in Karnataka due to political controversies, the high-budget Kamal Haasan film crashed rapidly after its opening weekend. It ended its theatrical run at a shockingly low Rs 97 crore worldwide, marking a rare and massive misstep for the legendary Ratnam-Haasan duo.
21. War 2 vs Coolie
The Independence Day weekend of August 14, 2025, witnessed one of the most talked-about Pan-Indian clashes of the year. Ayan Mukerji's highly anticipated YRF spy-thriller ‘War 2’, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani and Jr NTR, went head-to-head with Lokesh Kanagaraj's massive actioner ‘Coolie’, starring megastar Rajinikanth. The Tamil action entertainer also starred Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan and Sathyaraj, with Aamir Khan in a special appearance.
Both films were mounted on a staggering scale and commanded massive screen counts. However, when the final numbers came in, the Rajinikanth-starrer emerged as the definitive winner. ‘Coolie’ pulled in an impressive Rs 518 crore, while ‘War 2’ surprisingly underperformed its massive expectations, closing its worldwide run at around Rs 364 crore against a reported budget of Rs 400 crore.
22. Kantara: Chapter 1 vs Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari
October 2, 2025, delivered one of the most one-sided clashes of the decade. Rishab Shetty returned to direct and star in the folklore-driven prequel ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, which faced off against Shashank Khaitan's quintessential Bollywood rom-com ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’, starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Rohit Saraf and Sanya Malhotra. The clash clearly belonged to the visceral storytelling of Kantara. Powered by deep-rooted cultural appeal and immense repeat value, Rishab Shetty's film turned into a historic monster, earning a staggering Rs 852 crore worldwide. In stark contrast, despite its popular young cast, ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ was swept away in the wave, managing a modest Rs 98 crore worldwide.
