Vir Das revealed receiving a fake watch through a delivery app.

In an age where quick-commerce platforms have become the ultimate saviours for last-minute needs, comedian, actor, and filmmaker Vir Das recently found himself dealing with an unexpected and costly delivery nightmare. What was supposed to be a fast delivery for a high-end gadget turned into a massive social media fiasco involving Zepto, an alleged counterfeit product, and nearly Rs 50,000 on the line. The entire ordeal kicked off on Monday when Vir Das needed an Apple Watch urgently for an upcoming shoot.

Turning to the grocery and quick-commerce platform Zepto, he placed an order worth almost Rs 50,000. However, instead of receiving the premium smartwatch he paid for, the actor was handed what he claimed was a low-cost, counterfeit product manufactured in China.

Taking the issue straight to social media, Vir Das shared a video on Instagram, showing the fake watch, which he stated looked nothing like an authentic Apple Watch.

Check out Vir Das’ Instagram post below:

He questioned the authenticity of the product and the platform's delivery practices. Sharing his frustration over the situation, he wrote: “Okay. Am I wrong or is @zeptonow running china scam? Needed an apple watch quickly for a shoot. Paid full price. This showed up. Do all Apple Watches look like this? Please tell. I've never used one.”

On X, he also wrote: “By the way their customer device agent on the phone said there’s nothing they could do. Full scam. We needed one quick for a shoot. They charged us 50k.”

The video immediately went viral across social media. Worried users rallied behind the comedian, expressing concern over how such a massive error could occur in the supply chain and urging the delivery platform to thoroughly investigate the mishap and provide a speedy resolution.

Facing mounting backlash online, Zepto stepped up to address the allegations, issuing an apology for the inconvenience caused. The company assured the public that an investigation was already underway and arranged for a reverse pickup of the fake item.

In their official statement, the platform noted: "We take such concerns seriously and have already scheduled a reverse pickup of the product, which is our standard process in such cases. This will help us investigate the issue with our brand partners. For high-value products, users receive an OTP at the time of delivery. The OTP should only be shared after checking that the package is properly sealed and in good condition."

Fortunately, the social media uproar yielded quick results. Just a few hours later, Vir Das returned to X with a much-needed update for his followers. Posting a screenshot of his conversation with a Zepto delivery executive, he confirmed that the matter was resolved and he finally had the authentic product in hand.

"Update. @ZeptoNow has been in touch post social media, and a real Apple Watch has been delivered. China maal sent back. I don't know why this is on the news but since it is... want to clarify what I told the Zepto exec. Not the driver's fault," Vir Das wrote.

His prompt clarification won praise from netizens online, as the comedian ensured the delivery personnel did not take the fall for a mix-up that clearly occurred elsewhere in the supply chain.

When he isn’t calling out delivery mishaps online, Vir Das has been busy expanding his footprint as a filmmaker. He recently made his directorial debut with ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos’. Backed by Aamir Khan's production banner, the film featured Mona Singh, Imran Khan, and Mithila Palkar in prominent roles, though it failed to make a significant impact at the box office.

Currently, the actor-filmmaker is preparing for his next major directorial venture, a psychological horror film titled ‘Baara Number’. The project, which is presently in development, boasts a massive ensemble cast featuring Sheeba Chaddha, Arunoday Singh, Ahsaas Channa, Atul Kulkarni, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Suhail Nayyar, Puja Sarup, and Naveen Kaushik.
