What began as Bollywood actress-politician Kangana Ranaut’s criticism of the language and behaviour seen in videos from a Gen Z-led protest has rapidly grown into a full-blown political and celebrity controversy. The BJP MP’s remarks against protesters associated with the NEET paper leak protest and Cockroach Janta Party, particularly her description of some young women as “Generation Gutter”, triggered a sharp response from CJP leaders, opposition politicians and members of the film industry.

Since July 27, the row has witnessed personal attacks, demands for an apology, and a clarification video from Kangana that stopped short of withdrawing her remarks. Here is how the controversy unfolded.
Before The Controversy: What Was CJP Protest About?
The Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led satirical movement, fought over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and other alleged examination irregularities. Protesters began gathering at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 20, demanding accountability, compensation for affected families and the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Protesters clashed with security personnel and were subjected to lathi charges, tear gas and pellet guns, while more than 100 police personnel were also reportedly injured during the violence. After talks between CJP representatives and the Centre, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on July 25. The government also reportedly accepted several of its demands. It was against this politically charged backdrop that Kangana commented on videos from the protests.

July 27: Kangana Calls Protest Videos “Puke-Inducing”
The controversy began on July 27 when Kangana shared a series of strongly-worded Instagram Stories attacking the language, appearance and behaviour of protesters seen in viral videos. Calling the clips “puke-inducing”, Kangana claimed that she had never encountered so much “ugliness” in one place and asked, “Who is birthing and raising them?” She also criticised the protesters for identifying themselves as cockroaches, accusing them of subjecting others to “filth, garbage and ugliness”.
Kangana further claimed that a lot of waste had been left behind at Jantar Mantar after the protest. She said that watching the videos had left her “scarred” and that she needed a digital detox. However, it was her separate attack on young women participating in the movement that caused the fiercest outrage. The actress-politician accused some “westernised Indian women” of flaunting drugs, alcohol and their personal relationships while remaining financially dependent on their parents. She branded them “generation gutter” and claimed that some were neither good at studies nor capable of becoming homemakers.
July 27: Vishal Dadlani Defends Students
Music composer and singer Vishal Dadlani was among the first prominent film personalities to publicly defend the protesters. Responding to the focus on the offensive language allegedly used during the agitation, Vishal argued that attention should instead be paid to the force used against the students. He referred to protesters being beaten, tear-gassed and attacked with pellet guns, before telling those criticising their slogans, “You earned the gaalis.” Vishal also alleged that paid stories and influencer campaigns were being used to shape public opinion against the young protesters.
July 28: Kangana Defends Her Stand In Parliament
As criticism intensified, Kangana explained that her objection was directed at allegedly abusive slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, she argued that protests could be conducted without crossing the boundaries of dignity. Kangana questioned how people claiming to be students could use such language and maintained that criticism of the government did not justify personal abuse.
The clarification about her motivation, however, did little to settle the controversy because her posts had gone beyond condemning specific slogans. They had criticised the protesters’ upbringing, academic ability, morality and suitability for domestic life.
July 28: CJP Leaders Launch Counterattack
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke dismissed Kangana’s intervention by asking who took her seriously. Spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka embraced her insult and turned it into a political retort, arguing that the “cockroaches” that emerged from the gutter had succeeded in forcing a Union minister to resign.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das mounted an even sharper attack. He claimed that Kangana was not taken seriously even within her own party and accused her of trying to benefit from the attention surrounding the CJP movement. He said that politicians must maintain the dignity of their position and argued that Gen Z had done more to restore faith in Indian democracy than Kangana. He also referred to an earlier video in which she had spoken about being surprised by the workload that came with becoming an MP, using it to question her own seriousness as a politician.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party and AIMIM, also criticised Kangana, accusing her of insulting an entire generation following a movement that had secured significant concessions from the government.
July 28: Kangana Calls Saurav Das “Useless And Unemployed”
The political disagreement soon became personal. Responding to Saurav’s criticism, Kangana said she had searched for information about him online and questioned how he could call himself a student at the age of 28. Comparing their achievements, she pointed out that she had already won two National Awards by his age. Kangana defended her work as an MP by noting that she was simultaneously a filmmaker, performer, producer, screenwriter and entrepreneur.
She then described Saurav as “totally useless and unemployed”, adding that he would not understand what it meant to remain in constant demand. She concluded by telling him that he was not a student but “simply useless”. Saurav subsequently responded through Instagram Stories, telling Kangana to “take a chill pill” and suggesting that they talk through their differences.
July 29: Rakhi Sawant Enters Controversy
Rakhi Sawant also released a video attacking Kangana over her remarks about Gen-Z and young women. Calling her a “gutter mouth”, Rakhi questioned how an elected representative could speak about the country’s daughters like this. She also challenged Kangana’s political credibility and referred to the 2024 incident in which the actress was slapped by a CISF constable at Chandigarh airport.
July 29: Kangana Ranaut Issues Clarification
On July 29, Kangana released a selfie video responding to the backlash. She accused sections of the media of misrepresenting her remarks and claimed that her criticism was aimed only at some protesters displaying what she considered “gutter-chhap, unethical and obscene” behaviour in public.
Kangana argued that such conduct should not be normalised in front of children, elderly people and families. She maintained that discipline was not a matter of choice for people living in society and said personal freedom ended when it began to violate the rights, sentiments or dignity of others.
At the same time, she attempted to separate the protesters she had criticised from Gen-Z as a whole. Kangana said that she had previously praised young entrepreneurs, NEET students, youngsters supporting their families and members of Gen Z working within her own team.
July 30: Sonu Sood Calls Kangana’s Remark ‘Shameful’
The backlash from the film industry continued on July 30 when Sonu Sood publicly responded to the controversy. Sonu initially said that he had not heard Kangana’s complete statement, but emphasised that young audiences were responsible for elevating actors and other public figures. After being specifically told about the “Generation Gutter” remark, he called it “very shameful” and said it should not have been made.
