When you invite your oldest friends and co-stars to celebrate a massive milestone, you should fully expect to be the target of a few good-natured jabs. That is exactly what happened to Aamir Khan on Saturday evening during a grand bash celebrating 25 years since the inception of his production house, Aamir Khan Productions (AKP). The star-studded guest list included key actors, filmmakers, technicians, and close collaborators, but it was his ‘Ishq’ co-stars Kajol and Juhi Chawla who truly stole the show by ruthlessly – and hilariously – pulling his leg on stage.

The highlight of the night occurred when Aamir shared the stage with Kajol, Juhi, and his second ex-wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao. For context, Aamir famously shared screen space with both actresses, alongside Ajay Devgn, in Indra Kumar's 1997 hit romantic comedy ‘Ishq’. While praising Aamir's incredible legacy as both an actor and producer, Kajol managed to slide in a cheeky remark regarding his upcoming personal milestone.

“I think one thing we can say about Mr. Aamir Khan is his production has definitely proved he has great taste in movies… irrevocably good taste, staring with Lagaan and continuing on forward,” Kajol remarked. The mention of Ashutosh Gowariker's period sports drama ‘Lagaan’ was especially fitting, as the seminal production debut officially completed 25 years since its release on June 15.

However, Kajol wasn’t quite finished. To Aamir’s embarrassment, she added a personal footnote: “And great taste in women also.”

She laughed while playfully nudging him. Interestingly, while Kiran Rao was standing just a few inches away during the playful exchange, she became distracted by someone nearby and seemingly missed the zestful remark. The joke, of course, was a direct nod to Aamir's upcoming nuptials. After marriages to Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, the actor is all set to tie the knot for the third time with his partner of two years, Gauri Spratt, on July 5.

The roasting didn't stop with Kajol. When Juhi Chawla was asked to share a few words about her long, storied collaboration with Aamir, the actress humorously took full credit for his massive superstardom.

“I don't have a few words. I have so many words on Aamir that if I begin speaking, I'd take over the whole evening. Because before he became AKP, he was AK when we worked together. That was his first film. Whoever worked with me has reached great heights now,” Juhi joked.

The duo has a beloved on-screen history, starting with their 1988 breakthrough film, Mansoor Khan's romantic drama ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. They later reunited for cult classics like Mahesh Bhatt's 1993 rom-com ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ and Rajkumar Santoshi's 1994 buddy comedy ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. In fact, Juhi pointed out her lucky charm status extended to Shah Rukh Khan, starring in his early career successes like Aziz Mirza's 1992 rom-com ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ and Yash Chopra's 1993 blockbuster romantic thriller ‘Darr’.

While Juhi and Aamir’s history is extensive, Kajol’s dynamic with the actor is equally fascinating. Although Kajol has never actually worked in an Aamir Khan Productions film, the two have shared the screen three times: ‘Ishq’, Kunal Kohli's 2006 hit romantic thriller ‘Fanaa’ (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last month), and a 2022 cameo in Kajol's ‘Salaam Venky’.

Their collaboration on ‘Fanaa’ was purely Aamir's doing, as revealed by director Kunal Kohli on Screen Spotlight earlier this year. “When Aamir said yes, then Adi (producer Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films) asked him, 'Who do you think is the first, second, and third choice for the leading lady?' Aamir said, 'Kajol, Kajol, Kajol,'” Kohli recalled with a laugh.

Kunal Kohli also highlighted the duo's drastically different approaches to their craft, which required careful navigation on set. “They were outstanding together, but I had to prep in different ways. Kajol's first and second takes are the best, just like mine. Aamir starts warming up after the fourth and fifth takes," he explained. "I had to balance it in a way that I did two to three good camera rehearsals with Aamir before calling Kajol. Their styles are very different. Aamir believes in reading, Kajol doesn't. We were planning to do readings for five days, but by the end of the second day, we'd packed up because that's not Kajol's style. But that didn't change anything.”

Between the nostalgic film trivia, the sharp-witted roasts, and the upcoming wedding bells, the AKP 25-year bash proved that while Aamir Khan may be an institution in Bollywood, to his leading ladies, he will always just be "AK."
