Aamir Khan Finally Confirms ‘3 Idiots’ Sequel With Rajkumar Hirani. More Details Inside
Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s hit film ‘3 Idiots’ is set to get a sequel.
For nearly two decades, the phrase “Aal Izz Well” has been more than just a movie quote; it has been a cultural anthem. Now, fans of the iconic 2009 blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ have a massive reason to celebrate. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ is officially in the works, reuniting him with visionary director Rajkumar Hirani and ace screenwriter Abhijat Joshi. Putting an end to years of will-they-won't-they rumours, Aamir shared the update during a recent interaction, revealing that the project has moved past the stage of mere buzz.

In an interview with Amar Ujala, the actor confirmed that he has already heard the narration for the sequel and is incredibly excited about the direction the story is taking.
While details regarding the plot are being kept under tight wraps, Aamir dropped a major hint about the timeline. The sequel is set to take the story forward by 10 years, picking up with the beloved characters a decade after the events of the first film. Aamir described the new narrative as "unusual" and "beautiful," promising that while the story evolves, it will retain the same brand of humour and heart that made the original a global phenomenon.
“Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story and it’s wonderful. The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good – unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” Aamir shared.
The Bollywood superstar shared his excitement about stepping back into the role of Phunsukh Wangdu once again in the sequel. “It’s a beautiful story conceived by Raju and Abhijat. I’m looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again,” said the actor, who made his comeback to the big screen with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ after the failure of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ in 2022.
While official casting announcements are still pending, the industry is buzzing with the expectation that the original core cast – including R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi and Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi – will return to complete the trio. There is also significant anticipation regarding Kareena Kapoor Khan’s return as Pia. Last December, Sharman Joshi had expressed hope for a sequel, noting that while previous reunions had mostly been for commercial ad campaigns, the desire to revisit these characters has always been present among the cast.
The confirmation of ‘3 Idiots 2’ comes with a bittersweet update regarding another highly anticipated collaboration between Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani. The duo was previously linked to a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. However, Aamir clarified that the project has been put on the back burner. Despite three drafts being written, Hirani was reportedly not satisfied with the script's current form. For now, the focus has shifted entirely to the world of engineering, friendship, and the pursuit of excellence.
“Phalke’s story is very inspirational, and Raju worked on it for quite some time. He wrote three drafts, but he isn’t happy with the script yet. So, he has put the project on the back burner for now. He might resume working on it later,” the actor noted.
The stakes for a sequel are historic. Upon its release in 2009, ‘3 Idiots’ became a benchmark for Indian cinema, becoming the first Indian film to gross Rs 400 crore worldwide. It didn't just break box office records; it sparked a national conversation about the pressures of the Indian education system.
‘3 Idiots’ starred Aamir, Sharman and Madhavan as three friends, Boman Irani as a college principal, and Kareena as Aamir's love interest. It also had Omi Vaidya in a pivotal role. It followed the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college and revolved around the social pressures they faced in the education system.
As Aamir Khan prepares to return as Phunsukh Wangdu, it remains to be seen whether he can reclaim his throne at the box office with a story that will be as thought-provoking as it will be entertaining.
