Farhan Akhtar, known for his high-energy live sets with his band Farhan Live, took a moment to pivot from his usual repertoire to perform the iconic track ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ from the 1971 classic ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’. Taking to Instagram to share glimpses of the night, Farhan penned an emotional note that resonated with fans across the globe.

Check out Farhan Akhtar’s Instagram post below:

“In memory of the legend herself. A glimpse from last night at @lpuuniversity when all of us came together to pay Asha ji a tribute. Unfortunately, the audio recording isn’t the best but it was incredible to see young students in the thousands, show their love and respect for her music. To celebrate her is the best way to remember her,” Farhan wrote.

As the familiar beats filled the air, a giant screen behind the actor-singer lit up with a portrait of Asha Bhosle, creating a poignant backdrop for the tribute. The thousands of students in attendance were seen vibing and cheering, turning the university grounds into a space of collective mourning and celebration.

The post immediately garnered attention from the film fraternity and the Bhosle family. Asha ji’s granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, reacted to the video with a red heart emoji, acknowledging the touching gesture. Other industry figures, including Farhan’s wife Shibani Akhtar, sister Zoya Akhtar, and Saba Pataudi, also showed their support by dropping heart emojis in the comments section.

The tribute comes at a time when the Indian entertainment industry is still reeling from the loss of the legendary playback singer. Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on April 11 after suffering from cardiac and respiratory issues. She passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 due to multiple organ failure. Her final rites were conducted with full state honours at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on April 13, attended by stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Tabu Ranveer Singh, Aamir Khan, and Vicky Kaushal.

Asha Bhosle’s career, which began in 1943 with the Marathi film ‘Majha Bal’, spanned over eight decades and earned her numerous accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, and two National Film Awards.

As Farhan Akhtar noted in an earlier post, she was a “pillar” who set the “gold standard” for the industry.

Her “pitch-perfect voice, her joy of singing, and her fiery energy” remain truly irreplaceable. For the fans in Jalandhar and beyond, seeing her legacy celebrated by the younger generation was perhaps the most fitting farewell possible.
