Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is back with a romantic drama, but this time, it is trading picture-perfect fairy tales for a grittier look at modern romance. After facing multiple delays, the makers have finally dropped the highly anticipated trailer for ‘Chand Mera Dil’, starring Ananya Panday as Chandni and Lakshya as Aarav. Marking the first on-screen collaboration between the two young stars, the film is set to hit theatres worldwide on May 22.

The nearly 3-minutes-long trailer gives audiences a raw, unfiltered glimpse into a love story that spirals from deep attachment to growing emotional distance. Unlike typical Dharma romances filled with light-hearted drama, ‘Chand Mera Dil’ appears determined to explore the grey areas of relationships, tackling themes of possessiveness, entitlement, emotional boundaries, and trauma.

The intense promo opens with a heavy confrontation. Aarav desperately pleads, “I apologised for my mistake, and I will keep apologising.” A visibly upset Chandni sharply retorts, “But how long will you keep committing such mistakes?” before walking away without hearing him out. The narrative then cleverly intercuts between the different phases of their romance, flashing back to their college days when Chandni first fell for Aarav’s simple and grounded personality. We see their bond strengthen as he introduces her to his family and even quits smoking cigarettes for her.

However, the trailer makes it clear that possessiveness soon takes a darker shape. In one sequence, a desi-clad Chandni asks Aarav, “How do I look?” to which he replies, “...like you're mine.” What begins as endearing slowly morphs into toxic male dominance and love bombing. Ultimately, Aarav makes what the trailer calls an “unforgivable” mistake, forcing Chandni to choose her self-respect over love. The emotional stakes are perfectly encapsulated in an exchange where Chandni states, “Our love story has become legendary,” and Aarav ominously adds, “Legendary love stories always have a tragic ending.”

Directed by Vivek Soni (‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’, ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’), the film is driven by the official logline: “Not every first love gets a second chance. Come witness Aarav & Chandni's road to love!” The screenplay is penned by Tushar Paranjape and Soni, with dialogues by Akshat Ghildial alongside the writing duo. Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Somen Mishra, and Marijke deSouza, the film features music by Sachin-Jigar.

The trailer has already sparked a wave of reactions online. Sharing the trailer, Dharma Movies captioned it, “A love story that's not perfect, not planned, just a little real.” Suhana Khan, a close friend of Ananya, quickly commented, “Can't wait.” Fans flooded the internet with praise, with one writing, “Finally something so promising after so long from Dharma,” and another noting the “Saiyaara vibes.” Netizens have also lauded the bombastic music, the lead pair's chemistry, and Lakshya's intense acting.

As audiences gear up for the May 22 release, both stars are riding high on their recent projects. Ananya was last seen in ‘Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’ opposite Kartik Aaryan, while Lakshya most recently featured in Aryan Khan’s satirical action-comedy streaming series, ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’.
