Filmmaker Karan Johar recently took to social media to share his reaction to the new Prime Video series, ‘Raakh’. The show, which stars Ali Fazal and Sonali Bendre, has been described as an uncomfortable but entirely necessary watch. The gripping drama is inspired by the infamous 1978 Ranga-Billa case, an incident that shocked the nation and fundamentally changed the way many parents thought about child safety in India. For Karan Johar, the impact of the series was so profound that it prompted him to break his self-imposed hiatus from social media.

Taking to Instagram, the filmmaker-producer revealed that he had been trying to stay away from the platform, but the sheer emotional gravity of ‘Raakh’ compelled him to speak out.

“I was trying to take time off from the gram I thought I was successful till I saw this gut-wrenching series and felt the need to express myself,” Karan Johar wrote in his lengthy review.

As a single father to his twins, Yash and Roohi, the subject matter struck a particularly sensitive chord. ‘Raakh’ explores the chilling aftermath of the real-life kidnapping and murder of Delhi siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra. It delves deep into how the unspeakable tragedy devastated their grieving family while leaving an entire city gripped by an unshakeable fear.
Sharing how the series affected him both as a parent and a viewer, Karan Johar penned, “It's 1.35 am and I am deeply disturbed after watching the last episode… Disturbed as a parent, as a human being , and as a member of society… The ugliest side of humanity is what RAAKH explores…. No justification or childhood trauma is reason enough to succumb to an inner devil.”
The filmmaker admitted the lingering psychological impact of the show, stating, “I am not sure I will recover soon from this trauma binge…. But what I need to applaud is Prosit Roys incredible story telling, strong hold and non manipulative approach of emotional depiction and a special chefs kiss to his undeniable craft.”
‘Raakh’ is co-directed by Prosit Roy, Anusha Nandakumar, and Sandeep Saket. While Karan Johar was thoroughly impressed with the directorial vision, he reserved special praise for the actors portraying the grief-stricken parents. He lauded the performances of Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir, describing their work as nothing short of phenomenal.
"BUT what I can't get out of my head are the career defining performances of @iamsonalibendre and @bashiraamir … Their portrayal of the pathos pained parents in the face of unsurmountable tragedy left me awestruck… they became the characters and i salute their depiction … you need to observe their performances to experience what i have felt through this heart aching watch… they are OUTSTANDING! BRAVO!!!" Johar expressed.
Before concluding his emotional note, the renowned director made sure to acknowledge the wider cast and crew who brought the horrifying yet crucial story to life. He praised Ali Fazal and gave special mentions to supporting actors Akash Makhija and Ramandeep Yadav for their impactful contributions to the project.
