When world leaders gathered in France's picturesque Evian-les-Bains for the G7 Summit, global issues like the breakthrough US-Iran deal and support for Ukraine were on the official agenda. However, it was a light-hearted, unscripted moment between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that stole the social media spotlight, proving once again that the #Melodi phenomenon is the internet's favourite diplomatic crossover.

The viral moment unfolded just before the global heavyweights – including US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron – lined up for their traditional group photograph. A video capturing the exchange shows PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni warmly greeting each other with a handshake.

After Giorgia Meloni welcomed him with a cheerful, “Glad to see you again,” PM Modi mumbled a quick response. It was when an interpreter mentioned the word “Instagram” that the Italian Prime Minister beamed, delivering the quip that instantly set the internet ablaze: “Yes, we are the most famous couple on Instagram.”

This playful banter was a direct nod to their massive social media dominance, which reached a fever pitch just weeks prior.

The G7 exchange comes hot on the heels of PM Modi's visit to Rome last month – the final leg of a five-nation tour that also included the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway. During a dinner meeting that included a deep-conversation stroll at the iconic Colosseum, PM Modi – dressed in a sharp blue bandhgala – presented Giorgia Meloni, sporting an elegant white suit, with a remarkably sweet gift: a packet of Parle's Melody toffees.

Leaning into the viral internet trend and the candy's legendary “very, very chocolaty” tagline, Giorgia Meloni posted a video of the exchange. “Prime Minister Modi brought us a gift. It is Melody,” she said, adding that it was a “very, very good toffee”. PM Modi playfully chimed in with, “Melody,” as the two shared a hearty laugh.

Captioning the post, “Thank you for the gift,” Giorgia Meloni's video crossed a staggering 100 million views within six hours and has since racked up over 13 million likes. The duo also planted a tree in Rome under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, further cementing their warm rapport.

What started as a playful internet joke has solidified into a recognisable online brand over the past three years. The term – a seamless blend of both leaders' names – first took off during the 2023 COP28 Summit in Dubai when Giorgia Meloni shared a selfie captioned, “Good friends at COP28 #Melodi.”

She revived the trend in 2024 with the caption, “Hi friends, from #Melodi,” and again in June 2025 with a G7 selfie video declaring, “Hello, from the Melodi team.” Fans across social media platforms have consistently turned these unscripted moments into a steady stream of memes and fan edits.

While the internet obsesses over their camaraderie, the PM Modi-Meloni bond is grounded in serious foreign policy. Italy has emerged as India's most consequential global partner. The two nations are actively collaborating on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), positioning Rome as Europe's gateway to the Indo-Pacific. This special strategic partnership has yielded impressive economic results, with bilateral trade reaching USD 16.77 billion in 2025 and Italian foreign direct investment in India standing at USD 3.66 billion between April 2000 and September 2025.

Beyond his interactions with Giorgia Meloni, PM Modi maintained a packed schedule at the two-day Evian summit. He shared a series of photos alongside leaders like British PM Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, noting, "With fellow leaders at the G7 Summit in Evian... We will keep working together to advance prosperity, sustainability and human well-being." He also exchanged pleasantries and a brief handshake with Donald Trump, marking their first face-to-face interaction since a Washington meeting in February 2025.

But amidst the heavy-hitting policy talks and strategic handshakes, it's the undeniable charm of the #Melodi team that continues to win the internet's heart.
