The authorities in Vietnam have banned commercial screenings of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's upcoming movie 'Barbie'. The Greta Gerwig-directorial is one of the most anticipated movies of 2023, and it is slated for a release on July 21. The movie has been banned in Vietnam because it contains a scene depicting a map with the "nine dash line," which is a representation of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Vietnam authorities are saying that this particular map violates their sovereignty and hence the movie has been banned, reported Variety.
Vi Kien Thanh, director general of the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on Monday confirmed that the ban on the movie was decided by the National Film Evaluation Council.
“We do not grant license for the American movie Barbie to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line,” said the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper, also citing Vi Kien Thanh, as reported by Variety.
Apart from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, 'Barbie' also stars Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell.
In the new Hollywood movie, Margot Robbie will play the titular character while Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu will feature as the Ken dolls
The storyline of 'Barbie' has been kept under wraps, but we know that the movie also stars Dua Lipa in a pivotal role.
The official synopsis of the ‘Barbie’ trailer reads: "To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”
“That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that’s where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, OK, I probably should do it," Variety quoted director Greta Gerwig as saying.
'Barbie' is a co-production by Mattel Films, Heyday Films and Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley’s, LuckyChap Entertainment.
