After extended breaks, personal journeys, and quiet retreats from the spotlight, several iconic actors are stepping back onto the big screen. From comedy heavyweights to romantic heartthrobs, these stars are gearing up for a second innings that combines nostalgic charm with fresh storytelling. Bollywood’s latest comeback season is drawing its energy from several different kinds of returns. Govinda is rebuilding his film slate from the ground up, Preity Zinta has two theatrical releases lined up within weeks of each other, and Imran Khan is waiting to convert a recent cameo into a full-fledged leading role.

1. Govinda
Seven years after ‘Rangeela Raja’ failed to revive his box-office fortunes, Govinda has decided to take greater control of his return. At a press conference on July 13, the actor announced ‘Roopa’, a heroine-led suspense drama in which he will star opposite newcomer Rani Swarnkar. Govinda is also producing the film. He has described it as a story aimed particularly at younger viewers, combining suspense with the comedy audiences naturally associate with him. Its larger message, he suggested, will encourage young people to remain rooted while pursuing their dreams. Interestingly, this will be the first heroine-oriented project of his four-decade career.
However, ‘Roopa’ is still at an early stage. Govinda has said that its screenplay, dialogue and music are ready, but a director has not yet been signed; the supporting cast and release date are also awaited. The actor additionally unveiled ‘Duniyadari’, another youth-focused production featuring him and Rani, although its genre, director, plot and production schedule remain under wraps. In other words, Govinda has announced an ambitious two-film comeback plan – not yet a locked release calendar. His last theatrical film, Rangeela Raja, arrived in 2019 and featured him in a double role.
2. Preity Zinta
Among the names on this list, Preity Zinta has the most concrete theatrical comeback. The actress will first appear alongside Sunny Deol in ‘Batwara 1947’, previously titled ‘Lahore 1947’. Written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the Partition drama is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 14, 2026. It also features Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and Abhimanyu Singh. Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit have produced it under Aamir Khan Productions, while AR Rahman has composed the music and Javed Akhtar has written the lyrics.
Only five weeks later, Preity will change gears with ‘VIBE’, an action-comedy written and directed by Kunal Kemmu. The film stars Kunal Kemmu, Preity, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ fame Sparsh Shrivastava and debutant Vanshika Dhir. It follows a clueless slacker and his rule-following best friend, whose unremarkable lives are upended when they stumble upon a terrorist plot and suddenly find the country’s fate in their hands. Produced by Kunal Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani’s Drongo Films in association with Amazon MGM Studios India, ‘VIBE’ will release in theatres on September 18, 2026 – not directly on streaming, as some early reports suggested. Together, the two films offer Preity a strikingly varied return after her last leading theatrical appearance in ‘Bhaiaji Superhit’ in 2018.
3. Imran Khan
A decade after stepping away from acting following 2015's ‘Katti Batti’, chocolate-boy heartthrob Imran Khan is officially making his leading rom-com return with ‘Adhure Hum Adhure Tum’. After teasing audiences with a cameo in Aamir Khan and Vir Das’s ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos’, Imran Khan’s official comeback vehicle is a Netflix original film directed by Danish Aslam, who previously directed him in ‘Break Ke Baad’. Co-starring Bhumi Pednekar and co-produced by Imran Khan himself, the story explores modern relationship complexities and feel-good romance. Slated for release on Netflix in late 2026, the project brings back the sensitive, gentle romantic hero that defined an entire generation.
The film has been described as a more mature, emotionally untidy relationship story, reportedly drawing inspiration from Imran’s experiences of marriage and separation. Its title comes from a song in ‘Break Ke Baad’, and the makers regard the project as a spiritual successor rather than a sequel.
4. Celina Jaitly
Marking one of the most personal comebacks on this list, Celina Jaitly returns to the screen after a 15-year hiatus with the international biopic ‘Sister Nibedita’. Having spent recent years navigating personal trials – including a child custody battle and advocating for her brother’s release from custody in the UAE – Celina Jaitly’s return is driven by a deep emotional resonance. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee, the film stars Celina Jaitly in the titular role of Margaret Elizabeth Noble, the Irish-born educator who travelled to India, became a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, and dedicated her life to social reform. The film will chronicle her journey of spiritual transformation and activism, reflecting Celina Jaitly's own journey back into the public light.
Ipsita Acharya has written the story and screenplay, while Aritra Das Creation and Assorted Motion Pictures are producing the Hindi-language project. Planned as an international production, the film is expected to be shot across Mumbai, Kolkata, London and Ireland. Its remaining cast, filming dates and release date have not yet been announced. Celina’s last full-length theatrical appearance was ‘Will You Marry Me?’ in 2011, which explains why she has described this role as a “homecoming” rather than merely a comeback.
5. Rhea Chakraborty
Rhea Chakraborty is returning to acting with one of Netflix India’s biggest ensemble dramas of 2026. She is part of ‘Family Business’, created by Hansal Mehta and Niren Bhatt and directed by Mehta. Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma lead an extensive cast that also features Akash Khurana, Neha Dhupia, Anant Nag, Kanwaljit Singh, Dhruv Sehgal, Nandish Sandhu, Tina Desai, Raima Sen, Madhoo Shah, Rohan Mehra and Inayat Sood. The series begins with a visionary billionaire grooming an ambitious younger tycoon to succeed him at the head of a powerful conglomerate. Months after taking charge, the successor is abruptly dismissed when his mentor reclaims the throne. His retaliation turns a boardroom disagreement into a vicious conflict involving inheritance, family loyalties, buried secrets and control of the business empire.
Netflix has placed the series in its 2026 line-up, although an exact streaming date has not been announced. The project marks Rhea’s first acting assignment since she filmed ‘Chehre’ in 2019; that movie eventually released in 2021. Unlike some of the still-developing films on this list, Rhea’s return has both a completed production and an official platform commitment behind it.
6. Zeenat Aman
Zeenat Aman’s return occupies a slightly different category: her new film has already travelled internationally, but Indian audiences are still waiting for a general release. She stars in ‘Bun Tikki’, the feature directorial debut of Faraz Arif Ansari, alongside Shabana Azmi, Abhay Deol, Nushrratt Bharuccha and child actor Rohaan Singh. The film is backed by Jio Studios and Manish Malhotra’s Stage5 Production, with Jyoti Deshpande, Dinesh Malhotra, Marijke deSouza and Malhotra serving as producers.
The coming-of-age drama follows young Sanu as he struggles with identity, belonging and social expectations while attempting to build a more loving relationship with his single father. His grandmother, played within a family carrying secrets of its own, helps him understand that his difference is not something to suppress. ‘Bun Tikki’ had its world premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 5, 2025, and later continued its festival journey, but no Indian theatrical or streaming date has been announced.
7. Meenakshi Seshadri
Three decades after stepping away from mainstream Hindi cinema, Meenakshi Seshadri has reportedly found the project that could begin her second innings. In May 2026, the ‘Damini’ and ‘Hero’ actress revealed that she was relocating to Mumbai and actively looking for substantial parts in films and streaming shows. She made it clear that she did not want to return simply for visibility; the character, she said, had to be meaningful and impactful.
It was later reported that she had joined an eight-episode Prime Video series titled ‘Nanavati vs Nanavati’. The courtroom drama is said to be directed by Vipul Shah and co-star Jackie Shroff, Bhagyashree, Ram Kapoor and Anupriya Goenka. It would reunite Meenakshi and Jackie more than four decades after Subhash Ghai’s ‘Hero’, while Bhagyashree and Ram Kapoor reportedly play another couple in the story. Filming is said to have commenced in Mumbai, but Prime Video has not officially unveiled the series, its complete plot or a release date.
These returns also reveal how dramatically the idea of a Bollywood comeback has changed. A star no longer needs to re-enter through a conventional solo-led theatrical vehicle: the right role may arrive through a streaming ensemble, a historical biopic, a festival film or an unapologetically commercial comedy.
Nostalgia may draw the first wave of attention, but the stories – and the space these projects give their returning actors – will ultimately decide which comeback becomes a genuine second act.
