Indian filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently made his OTT series debut with the Netflix’s ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’. While the show received polarising reviews, it managed to generate great viewership. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece and actress Sharmin Segal featured in his debut web series and received intense criticism for her performance in the Netflix show. A section of social media users also claimed that she did not deserve the role and got it only due to nepotism. The trolling got so brutal that Sharmin Segal had to turn off comments of some of her Instagram posts.

Now, the actress has broken her silence on the chatter surrounding her on social media to her performance in ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’. Apart from her acting in the show, she was also criticised for her rude behaviour and comments towards her ‘Heeramandi’ co-stars during interviews.

In a conversation with News18 Showsha, she said, “The audience is the king at the end of the day. And as a creative person, it's very important to acknowledge that. They have a right to their opinion – positive or negative. That's one thing that gives me perspective and allows me to be okay.”

Sharmin Segal added, “I had given my all to Alamzeb's character. We tend to fixate on the negatives but there are so many positives that have also come along, which we don't talk about. It's perhaps not interesting enough to talk about positives and we tend to look over them to some degree.”

Talking about her decision to stay away from the scrutiny, the actress said, “There was a point when I was not looking at many things [reviews] but then slowly, I realised that I was also missing out on a lot of love that I was getting. I've now started paying attention to that. Over the last few days, I decided to look through it all. The audience's opinion is what will probably help you be the best version of yourself.”

The actress also said, “I saw positivity, constructive criticism, and a whole range of feedback and that’s what happens when you put yourself out there as an artist or an actor. It was actually quite nice to hear all sides of things. It’s an inevitability. Opinions shape you as an actor and a human being. These are actual humans responding to you and it makes you realise how many people you can reach. These opinions are very important.”

However, Sharmin Segal said that because of the talk around her role in ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, her debut film ‘Malaal’ also came into the limelight.

“They've not only connected with Alamzeb and Sharmin but also with Aastha from Malaal. Malaal is in the list of top ten shows because of Heeramandi. Heeramandi has allowed me to connect with so many people across the globe. It's quite a nice experience overall,” she said.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, which has been renewed for a second season, starred Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Richa Chadha, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman and Farida Jalal.

Talking about Sharmin Segal, she made her acting debut with the 2019 film ‘Malaal’, co-starring Meezaan Jafri. The film was backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

She has worked as an assistant director for several movies like ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’, ‘Mary Kom’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, and ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.
