Filmmaker Kiran Rao, who happens to be the former wife of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, is currently enjoying all the critical acclaim coming her way for her latest directorial venture 'Laapataa Ladies'. In the latest entertainment news, Kiran Rao has opened up about the challenges of releasing a film as a female director, and how there are different standards for women as compared to men. For the unversed, 'Laapataa Ladies' released in cinemas on March 1, and the film got sandwiched between 'Dune: Part Two' (March 1) and 'Shaitaan' (March 8).

Speaking to journalist Sucharita Tyagi, Kiran Rao said that she has experienced a certain bias both personally and professionally. However, she also said that she has developed a thick skin thanks to all the abuse that came her way when she first became a public figure after marrying Aamir Khan in 2005.

“I don’t even know what scrutiny I’m under because I don’t even read all this. And I feel like that’s a really healthy way to live your life. Because there’ll always be people who find you odd-looking and strange and ask, ‘Aamir Khan ne kis chashmish aurat se shaadi kar li hai’. I’ve heard all kinds of things in my youth. I’m an individual and I have my own mind. Beyond a point, I just don’t care," said Kiran Rao.

Kiran Rao also said that she is no longer interested in the gossip around her, which has only increased after she and Aamir announced their divorce.

“Women have been consciously or unconsciously raised to be non-confrontational. Be seen but not heard, that kind of thing. So, it’s important to have these conversations. This film can be a great place to start that,” she said.

For the unversed, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao tied the knot in 2005 after meeting each other on the sets of 'Lagaan'.

The duo welcomed Azad in 2011. However, the couple announced their separation in July 2021.

Speaking of Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies', the new Hindi film which was released on March 1, 2024, has so far minted Rs 14.22 crore in India, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.
