Adah Sharma’s ‘The Kerala Story’ has managed to cross the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office.

Adah Sharma’s new Bollywood movie ‘The Kerala Story’, which opened to underwhelming reviews, has set the cash registers ringing at the domestic box office. ‘The Kerala Story’, which released in theatres on May 5, has been making headlines ever since its trailer came out. The new Hindi movie, also starring Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani, has now entered the Rs 200 crore club. ‘The Kerala Story’ has also emerged as the second highest-grossing Hindi movie of 2023.

Indian film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the box office collection of ‘The Kerala Story’ on Twitter.

Check out Taran Adarsh’s tweet below:

According to Taran Adarsh, the total earning of ‘The Kerala Story’ currently stands at Rs 203.47 crore. The new Hindi movie has also overtaken Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’, Salman Khan and Pooja Hegde’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’, and Ajay Devgn and Tabu’s ‘Bholaa’.

It is worth mentioning that ‘The Kerala Story’ managed to make Rs 35 crore during its opening weekend despite facing tough competition from the Marvel film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and the IPL 2023.

While the new Bollywood movie is performing well at the domestic box office, it continues to remain controversial as several people have hit out at its subject matter.

However, veteran actress Shabana Azmi had tweeted in support of ‘The Kerala Story’, saying once a movie has been passed by CBFC, it should not be banned. For the unversed, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had banned the movie in her state to maintain law and order.

Ever since the trailer of ‘The Kerala Story’ was released, the movie has been embroiled in a controversy regarding the subject matter it is trying to portray. The trailer originally stated that the film is based on the stories of more than 32,000 Kerala women who have allegedly been radicalised by Islamic fundamentalists.

However, amid huge backlash, the makers changed the trailer synopsis, and the revised version stated that the film is based on the “true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala.”

Recently, the Supreme Court also ordered the makers of ‘The Kerala Story’ to add a disclaimer stating that the new Hindi movie tells a "fictionalised" account of events and there is no official data to back the claim of 32,000 women in Kerala being forcefully converted into Islam and joining the ISIS terror group.

As per a tweet shared by Live Law, the Supreme Court has asked the producers to mention two things in their disclaimer.

These two things are -- "there is no authentic data to back up the suggestion that the figure of converted people is 32,000 or any other figure," and "the film represents a fictionalised version of subject matter."

As per NDTV, the Supreme Court has also stayed West Bengal government's decision to ban the new Hindi movie in the state.

The top court also said that the state government has to maintain law and order as the film has been granted certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

'The Kerala Story' has been directed by Sudipto Sen, while it is bankrolled by Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
